End of M-N Holiday Specials, Increases in Parking rates East of Hudson

Recommended Posts

Geez, all of these cuts are pretty substantial, considering (MTA) supposedly will have all that extra congestion pricing $$$ in the next few years. Is this a game to plead poverty?

The parking rates are one thing, but the Holiday specials only cost $200k to run and they want to cut them?

What kind of petty bullshit is that?

Don't worry @paulrivera. This is only a "proposal". lol

Even with these cuts, MTA only filled 500 million out of 1 billion budget deficit. So MTA needed to raise revenue or cut more to completely fill its budget. The unions needed to give some this round to. There is no way, the customers and taxpayers could fill the gap even more.

The New Haven trains will probably survive anyways since CT primarily funds those trips (I don't think their shoppers specials even stop in NY state other than 125/GCT)

The Hudson line specials.... RIP in 2020 probably.

Shit, no more free parking on weekends. This will just encourage less train usage.

That just gives the impression of being a cheapskate...

Let's summarize:  Per the report, the elimination of the shoppers specials will eliminate the need to cover those jobs with overtime or relief day coverage.  That looks great at face value.  Less trains running = less staff for those trains.  What this report doesn't take into account is that those extra trains are staffed with regular assignments for the personnel, as regularly assigned jobs get modified for the trains (with few exceptions).  The other thing the report does not take into account is ridership of those trains.  The shopper specials are used to relieve over crowding for regularly scheduled trains.  Overcrowding increases potential missed revenue.  Lets hypothesis that it will cost $750 in staffing to run one of those trains (the actual number is likely less), and the fare per rider is anywhere from $11.25 to $19.25 ($15.25 average).  It will only take 50 missed fares on earlier and later trains to compensate for the cost of manpower.  50 missed fares is very low when a train is over crowded (standing room only).

Yes, but just think...itll reduce those hyperventilating articles "zOmg this Engineer made over $80k in OT".

So it'll be a political win. No one really cares about the final pricetag, it's all about covering your own back and being able to say 'it wasn't me I did what I was told, look over there'.

At the Riverdale station, yes... Spuyten Duyvil has limited parking, so most people get dropped off. I usually grab an Uber on weekends to the Riverdale station, or walk to the Spuyten Duyvil station.
