Cait Sith Posted September 2, 2019 Share #3 Posted September 2, 2019 No matter what they do with that Q24.....that won't solve the problem of it's consistent bunching. A part of me, for my own selfish reasons wishes that they would add a bit more buses to the Q41, with better headways. It makes my life easier not having to deal with the inept Q24.

And then when one finally shows up, the b/o goes on an epic layover.... Smh.... While all of that is true, the Q24 also has a tendency to bunch like crazy on the Brooklyn side as well(it's bunching between Broadway Junction and Lafayette-Patchen at this moment). Jamaica isn't that bad today either so I'm not sure why they would be bunching as bad as they are. The line also has a tendency to bunch even after 10pm and on Sunday/Holiday schedules and it baffles me. The whole line needs better dispatching and supervision. One of the problems is that they hardly ever short turn the Q24 at Archer-Sutphin to make up for gaps in service or reduce the neverending bunching problems, but they short turn the Q54 to the Van Wyck(technically, they short turn it at Jamaica-138th). In terms of the Q54 and Q56, often times I would take a Q54 and Q56 to the Van Wyck and just walk home from there when there's no Q24 or Q41 to be seen, and by the time I would get to Atlantic, there would still be no Q24s to be seen, even if I were to make a quick stop at the Kennedy's on that corner of Jamaica/Van Wyck. I would take the Q8, but the fact that the stop is right before it crosses the Van Wyck is a bit of a nuisance because of how long that light stays on green for the service road. And lately, operators have assumed that the 133rd Street stop is gone because the bus stop sign was removed.....by someone who lives by that stop.As for that last part of the Q41, that was, and still is my life as a Queens resident lol. Nowadays I just tend to walk home from 165th Street Terminal, or if I'm that much of a lazy bastard, take the E to Jamaica-Van Wyck and walk home from there.

I know it does & it's a reason I opt for the Q56 over the Q24 over there at Alabama if I don't feel like putting up w/ the .... While the Q56 snails under the el, the Q24 simply makes too many stops along Atlantic during the meat of the day; my luck is simply better w/ the Q56 anyway, I find..... The ONLY time I use the Q24 to get to Jamaica is during the early morning hours; otherwise, forget it..... Ever since they've reinstated Q24 service to Patchen, usage has picked up - it's not carrying air like it used to along Broadway, before it got cut back to Broadway Junction.... So yeah, definitely a factor with the route's bunching.... 38 minutes ago, Cait Sith said: In terms of the Q54 and Q56, often times I would take a Q54 and Q56 to the Van Wyck and just walk home from there when there's no Q24 or Q41 to be seen, and by the time I would get to Atlantic, there would still be no Q24s to be seen, even if I were to make a quick stop at the Kennedy's on that corner of Jamaica/Van Wyck. I take Atlantic coming home from work & I often say to myself, where the f*** are these buses.... I usually get to Jamaica proper around 5:30-ish from the office (Mineola), and it's more often than not that I can go long stretches without seeing a bus & when I do finally see one, it's usually two (don't know if that came off right, but you get the point)..... I can state without hesitation that buses are not running uniformly; not even close & it's been a problem for decades with the Q24.... Q54 is a lost cause; while I'm a fan of short turns in general, they're just not working on this route.... A local from Williamsburg to Jamaica is too much & Met. av being as narrow as it is, does not help matters... The thing needs to be split.... The ridership patterns would support it... It's not like the Q24 where folks are riding crazy long distances on it.... 1 hour ago, Cait Sith said: As for that last part of the Q41, that was, and still is my life as a Queens resident lol. I'm just a Brooklyn resident that's sporadically taken/takes the thing over the course of time & I clearly see what's been, and still does go on... Lil 57 Posted September 3, 2019 Share #8 Posted September 3, 2019 So they lied about the S53 increases as well. Guess the decided not to increase service on the S46 and S53 like they said. Probably because of the high rate of fare evasion on SI.
NewFlyer 230 Posted September 3, 2019 Share #9 Posted September 3, 2019 I always hope that they would add more service to the Q19, but I forget that they barely touch MTA Bus routes. As for the Q24 why don’t they just run the thing from Broadway Junction to Jamaica Center. I don’t think there is any need for it to go to 168th Street. I feel like service along Broadway is primarily there because the MTA is too cheap to open up closed entrances on the . It makes more sense to take the Q24 or B20 over the because the bus will drop you much closer than the train due to entrances being at one end of the platform. As for what should serve that stretch of Broadway, I don’t know. I don’t think an existing route should do it. However if I had to pick I think the B83 would be a better choice over the Q24.

It seems to have the same number of trips as before, just moved around a little to make even headways on each branch. There might also be a little less running time. If you count the trips during the rush hour between July and now, they have gone down overall. Most other times, the BPH on 14th Street is the same. The way the M14A/D were scheduled up to now was essentially as one route with branches. The headways are consistent on the trunk, but differ on the branches. The D branch got more service at times, so the headways ranged quite a bit, and so did A (although they were more consistent). Now, they are scheduled as two separate routes, with differing headways. This is okay for the individual sections (which has quite a number of riders), but makes it worse for riders specifically going across 14th Street, because now the headways are not consistent. You could be waiting 7 minutes and two buses will show up together (during the rush hour), where previously, it was at most a 2-3 minute (theoretical) wait. Factor in the traffic, and bunching, and the waits are still going to be terrible if you miss the wrong bus. The few times that I actually bother to go over to 165th to xfer over to another route for Jamaica LIRR, I always see the NICE routes (n6, n22, and n24) get some usage over there along with the Q6 and Q8. In fact, the n6 is the only route that gets some semblance of usage at 165th Street during overnight hours. The Q36 is pretty weird. I always see four of them on Hillside and none or one of them at Jamaica Avenue. I'm not buying the narrow street argument because I've been on a few n6x runs that use 205th Street to reach Hillside from Jamaica to save time, or use Springfield to reach Hempstead Ave from Hillside.

The Q36 simply has more passenger activity along Hillside, compared to Jamaica av.... More people use it as backup to the Q43 (eastbound) over the Q1.... What's weird about the route, is that the MTA used it to supersede the Q79.... Damn thing carries so much air along LNP, it isn't even funny..... Late AM: Service will operate every 10-20 minutes instead of every 12-15 minutes. The 11:07 AM trip from Ridgewood to Flushing will be discontinued. The 12:16 PM trip from Flushing to Ridgewood will be discontinued. The first afternoon bus departing from Ridgewood will depart at 2:35 PM instead of 3:00 PM. Brooklyn Division winners, losers and neutral for September 2019. Additional commentary later for other boroughs. As always comments, criticisms and or concerns. Winners: Flatbush: The is starting to finally address some of the B44+ issues with additional service. However, still no new delivery of artics.. Also, B46 pull out from Avenue N is essential to maintain levels on the local. East New York: Although this would be on the neutral side, but ENY wins with the Q24 frequent service. One may say that service is a bit infrequent between the East NY line and Ozone Park which to me needs to be addressed. However, with some recent additions the 24 will be well covered Losers: Fresh Pond: Big hits on the B26,B52, B54 service. The saving grace for them is B7, Q54 services being restored. Grand Avenue: B38 implementation of artic service and cuts. Saving grace for GA- restored Q58 service levels Neutral: Ulmer Park, Jackie Gleason.

To be fair, the Q79 was also mostly air. The route is so lightly used that even that dinky van replacement service carried air. You could probably shove everyone on the Q79 into taxis/Uber and it would probably be cheaper. As a former resident LNP bus service just doesn't work, especially since LNP is hardly ever congested.

Of course it was, but my point is & has been that the Q79 carried less air than the Q36 does now along LNP... I think there's something to that. It's one thing to have gotten rid of the S60 & replaced it with a diversion of the S66.... It's another to run Q36's to Little Neck as a compromise to getting rid of the Q79. If I thought it was time to cut my losses with the Q79, then that would have been it & the end of it....

What was the Q79? Was it the college shuttle?

From the LIRR station at Little Neck to the Q36 terminal in Floral Park. Was cut in 2010, and restored with an extension of Q36
