NEW YORK -- You may be riding the R, but it sure smells like the 2.

After just eight months in 2019, the MTA has received more “soiled car” reports than it has in all of 2017, according to a report by THE CITY, with 1,623 mentions of sloppy subway trains through August, versus 1,504 in a 12-month stretch two years ago.

For what its worth, in terms of slow subway service, an MTA spokesperson told THE CITY soiled cars accounted for 1% of all subway delays from January 2018 through July 2019. Not all soiled car reports translated to delays, the spokesperson added, according to the report.

In 2018, reports of soiled cars topped 2,000, a number likely to be broken this year.

The report added specific examples riders (and the MTA) encountered, such as “customers are running out of car #2371” because of a “strong odor” on a northbound No. 1 train at 34th Street-Penn Station. The May 15 incident prompted the conductor to shut down the train due to safety concerns.

A month and a half later, a “partially exposed” man urinated on an E train at the World Trade Center station, then refused to leave, THE CITY reported.

Nelson Rivera, administrative vice president for Transport Workers Union Local 100, told THE CITY the problem is a safety issue for everybody who encounters the subway, including cleaners: “These cars are disgusting, and a lot of cleaner jobs have been cut over time, too.”

The NYC subway is becoming such a chore just to ride, even the railfans are riding it less.

Metro-North and express buses all day.

Sincerely,

Railfan since age 5

Nowhere does this report blame the people who are the cause of said problems.
