What is the red/white tape on the backs of side-view mirrors on NYCTA buses for?

My guess is that it's reflection tape to avoid sideswiping that will break off the mirrors.

Any vehicle with protruding bits usually has some kind of warning pattern. Metroliner cab cars have a warning pattern because they have "front end" equipment such as the cow catcher.
