Hi. I am interested in applying for these exams as a way to get my feet in the door with MTA. Do you have any tips and recommendations ?  What is the difference b/w Associate and the one without the Associate title? WHere can i find materials to prepare myself for this exam?

Thank you very much.

First, welcome to the Forums!!

Second, as far as the difference is concerned, which is explained in the Notice of Examinations, which can be found in my first post, for the 'Associate' position, you need a bachelor's degree and two years of full-time experience in a customer service or public information capacity, whereas for the title without the 'Associate' you just need a bachelor's degree. As far as materials to prepare yourself for the exam, for now I would emphasize to read and focus on the Notice of Examinations. As time gets closer to the exam, either myself or somebody else will post something with what we think is appropriate material to prepare ourselves for the exam.

Thanks OP!!!!

On the application, it says that:
"Experience which involves only incidental or occasional customer service, such as a sales associate or cashier is not acceptable."

Now, let' say I want to apply for the one that requires experiences and I worked at both Barnes & Nobles and Macys, do these two not qualify for experiences even when they are literally customer service jobs?

You're welcome.

As far as your experience at Barnes & Noble and Macys, I would personally categorize those under the heading of "sales associate," however that's just me. If you're still unsure, you can always send them an email using the contact information which is located on the bottom of this webpage.

Good luck!!

Checking to see if materials for the exam are out to study with. Also, are there similar exam books out, not particularly these exam numbers?

Thanks!

The exam is basic reading comprehension similar to other civil service exams you might have taken. I saw some sample practice exams posted here in these forums, maybe if someone knows they can post their exact location

Has anyone that applied gotten a letter yet? I know they said something about sending one 10 days after the examination.

I applied but didn't receive a letter yet. I think they said to contact them if you don't  receive a letter 4 days BEFORE the exam date

Just following up on this thread. With the exam being almost 2 weeks away, has anyone receive anything a of  yet?

Nothing here yet. I did send my application literally on the last day it was due but as long as it got postmarked it shouldn't be a problem

Hi, I have received the letter to go take the exam on the 29 of March for applications 0609 & 0611, did anyone else get it? And do you know What materials I can study from? Thank you

I also got my letter as well to take it at 2 PM on the same day. As far as materials to study, from briefly looking the Notice of Examination (NOE), which you can find in the first post, I would recommend this and this NYPD Test Preparation Kits except for the memorization portion. Both test preparation kits give a small preview of most of the things that are listed on the Notice of Examination. In addition, from taking several civil service examinations, I would not recommend purchasing any of those "passbooks" since the material contained in these books are out of date. Now if you can get a "passbook" from your local library for free, then whether you use it or not is up to you.

I’m taking it 8 am that morning, thanks for the materials. I called the library they don’t have the book. I’ll just have to review the materials you mentioned and any thing else I can get online to prepare for that day, I’m excited but yet nervous because of the wait process. Did you hear of any new exams out similar to this? I want to keep applying

You're welcome and, as of now, I did not hear of any new examinations that are out which are similar to this.

Me too, and it states the following:

This is New York City Transit, informing you that the exam for Transit Cust Service Spec, Exam Number 0611, has been postponed until further notice. You should receive another notice with an update on the status of the exam when the new test date is determined.

We apologize for any inconvenience.
