House approves split tolls on Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

There's a bit of propaganda in the comments from politicians, MTA, etc. If any truck is driving into Brooklyn from Staten Island they paid a toll to get to Staten Island in the first place, they are not "driving into the city for free". They quite literally paid a toll to enter the city from NJ.

This may be a moot point by the time it's implemented because of congestion pricing, but a two way toll would then make it cheaper to enter the city via Hudson River crossings.

On Tues., Dec. 17, the House of Representatives voted to restore the two-way toll as part of a massive $1.4 trillion bipartisan spending package for Fiscal Year 2020. Two days later, the Senate passed the spending package — which also avoided a government shutdown amid the impeachment fight.

According to Rob Gottheim, Nadler’s district director, the plan is for the two-way toll to be back in operation in a year from now.

Jurisdictions. $13+ to Port Authority doesn’t put money in (MTA) hands. And without two-way on the VZ, (MTA) gets less money since folks can take the SIE into NY/LI then avoid any (MTA) toll by going through Manhattan and avoiding the East River tunnels.

You can't blame them, the ~$13 toll is for passenger vehicles. Trucks pay much more.

Doesn’t change the fact that without two-way tolling on the VZ, (MTA) gets $0 revenue from Port Authority and the shunpiking that goes with outbound travel.

It still isn't "free". Every truck being operated by motorist that enters Staten Island has to pay a toll via one of the 4 bridges.

But unless it's over the VZ westbound, none of it goes to (MTA).

So a truck can come over any of the SI bridges from Jersey, cross the VZ to Brooklyn (no eastbound tolling on it yet), make a delivery in Brooklyn, and then go over the Manhattan or Bk Bridge - toll-free - and through the tunnels back to Jersey.

(MTA) got $0 on that trip.

That's what two-way tolling on the VZ is supposed to fix - either getting the vehicles using the SIE to bypass Midtown or congestion on the GWB to pay, or get them to stop coming through SI. It's NIMBYism and revenue generation combined.

Yes, that's all understandable, my original point (as based on the statements of certain individuals in the article) was that truck is not getting to Staten Island for "free", regardless of which agency gets the money.

It definitely isn’t. But there’s no requirement for Port Authority to share toll revenue with (MTA) - hence (MTA)’s desire for two-way tolling on the VZ.

Speaking of which, now that cashless tolling is the in thing these days, what's stopping the Port Authority from collecting tolls going to NJ and splitting the rates to make it seem cheaper?

Law, custom, or since their crossings and the traffic patterns are designed so you can’t shunpike to get to NYC from NJ, it’s likely not necessary.

As my late father would say, PA gets your money upfront cuz you’ll leave NY broke.

I am one of those that since one way toll collection began, took advantage of that, by taking the 'free' crossing one way, and taking a cheaper return route.   For example, if traveling from Queens to points south, I would use the Williamsburg Bridge, and Holland Tunnel.  Returning via Outerbridge crossing, and Verrazzano Bridge.

Or, if going north, via GW Bridge, returning via Tappan Zee or Newburgh-Beacon, depending on destination...

Two way tolling has been in effect since 12/1/2020.

Likewise. Also, one time, returning from Woodbury Commons, I took the Bear Mountain Bridge, it was $1 at the time, not sure what it is now.
