N6 Limited Posted January 10, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 10, 2020 There's a bit of propaganda in the comments from politicians, MTA, etc. If any truck is driving into Brooklyn from Staten Island they paid a toll to get to Staten Island in the first place, they are not "driving into the city for free". They quite literally paid a toll to enter the city from NJ. So a truck can come over any of the SI bridges from Jersey, cross the VZ to Brooklyn (no eastbound tolling on it yet), make a delivery in Brooklyn, and then go over the Manhattan or Bk Bridge - toll-free - and through the tunnels back to Jersey. got $0 on that trip. That's what two-way tolling on the VZ is supposed to fix - either getting the vehicles using the SIE to bypass Midtown or congestion on the GWB to pay, or get them to stop coming through SI. Law, custom, or since their crossings and the traffic patterns are designed so you can’t shunpike to get to NYC from NJ, it’s likely not necessary. For example, if traveling from Queens to points south, I would use the Williamsburg Bridge, and Holland Tunnel. Returning via Outerbridge crossing, and Verrazzano Bridge.
