There is WAAAAAY too much daylight express bus service and virtually nothing new at night replacing the subway.

The bus system is carrying 30% of its normal riders overall. I would make a guess that express buses are tracking similarly to commuter rail at around 20-25%. That means MTA express bus service should be operating at 50-60% of its normal capacity with a base rush hour schedule of 30 minutes and a base off-peak schedule of 60 minutes. The BM Downtown/Midtown splits should be on a base schedule. That schedule should be reviewed every two weeks for adequacy. Local bus service should be operated at 75% of normal schedules and bumped up as needed.

Meanwhile, buses should be running a subway shuttle parallel to the closed subways every 20 minutes. They should not be free. There should be a double transfer issued between 12AM and 5AM across the entire city. That is cheaper than Uber. In addition, certain core routes should run every 20 minutes overnight, such as the B41, B46, M15, and Bx12.

Yes because it's 1. Very easy to get to the fare box and 2. you definitely should be paying $6.75 for an express bus that is replacing the cheaper subway lines and already charges $2.75 on free weekend shuttle bus routes too.

The only reason why the subways are closed is because politicians do not want to propose a plan to deal with the homeless in a meaningful way. Free shuttle buses move the homeless issue onto buses. That does not solve the problem. How do you access control free buses?

The express bus system should have a peak/off-peak fare structure. A lot of people would opt for a $3.50 off-peak express bus outside of Staten Island.

Thank you once again for doing this exceptional work.

This really struck me, but it is not surprising:

Quote

B1 - Net Reduction due to Artic Conversion

AM rush service will operate every 8-15 minutes instead of every 6-10 minutes
Midday service will operate every 10 minutes instead of every 8 minutes
All PM rush service to Manhattan Beach and late PM rush service to Bay Ridge will operate every 10 minutes instead of every 8 minutes
Saturday Daytime service operates every 8-10 minutes instead of every 7-9 minutes
Slightly more frequent service during the early evening hours on Saturdays
Sunday late evening service will operate every 35-40 minutes instead of every 25 minutes

Bus riders would much rather have crowded buses than have to wait 35-40 minutes. This is inexcusable.

B11: Omission of Overnight Service

There's no overnight service listed here, as if the B11 won't be running anymore during overnight hours

If this is the case, this would count as a major service change, and should have been brought to the MTA Board.

  • Service between 6:20 AM and 8:00 AM on the full route between towards Jackson Heights will operate every 5 minutes instead of every 3 minutes

  • South/West of 92nd Street & Astoria Boulevard, there will be 2 to 3 minute headways followed by 5 minute headways instead of consistent 3 minute headways

They are really trying to ruin the Q49 to justify what they are doing in the Queens Bus Redesign. Color me surprised.

B99: New Overnight Route Between Midwood to Columbus Circle

"We're implementing the B99 bus route to get you between Midwood, Brooklyn and Columbus Circle during overnight hours. It will operate every 20 minutes from approximately, 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. every night. Here's the full list of stops...."

There's two things wrong with this statement:

  1. The last trip in both directions reaching its end terminal at 5:40am (Brooklyn bound) & 5:50am (Manhattan bound) doesn't mean that it operates from appx. 1am to 6am.... That is misleading; it's putting it out there that the last trip leaves from either end terminal from appx. 6am....
    • In terms of conveying span of service, there is a distinction between [operate from] & [in operation from]..... The way you (@BM5 via Woodhaven) conveyed it, is right.... What the MTA, in that quote, means is in operation from....
  2. Even if, since when was 6am classified as part of being nighttime service!?

@B35 via Church On the subway service guide (it used to be on the map itself but now I believe it is a separate document...or at least it was last I checked) it classified overnight as 12:00am - 6:30pm daily.

Funny enough when I was little my mother and I got screwed by that. The (B) was listed as operating evenings (8pm -12am) but actually ran until 9pm. We ended up backtracking from West 4th to Herald Square for a (Q) (we weren't familiar with Atlantic/Pacific back then)

The MTA is conveying it based on the beginning of the first trips and the end of the last. This is actually normal for the MTA.

The issue here is that the MTA's choosing to either advertise the departure times or the overall span (probably in an attempt to say that buses are still in operation after the last departures).

They're conflating the two & it's misleading...

Stating that "It will operate every 20 minutes from approximately, 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m." is telling me that the last trip departs the terminal at appx. 6am....

(e/g. Anybody waiting at the Junction for a Manhattan bound B99 around 6am, is going to be shit out of luck...)

There's no disagreement about the poor marketing.

The only good thing is that unlike how WMATA handles rail schedules, the B99 has an actual schedule available to the public. (Even so, it's considerably undercut by how hidden it is, thereby needlessly complicating matters.)

That's another issue.

Though my iPod can connect to the Internet, I first need WiFi, or that's out of the question. Some may lack even that.

FWIW they (at least, after a ton of complaints) left the BusTime code that is at the bus stop so people can text it.

I explained the overnight situation before. All of that was done on OT. If drivers didn't want it or couldn't do it, they were constantly short drivers. With the gaps in service, they were better off eliminating it.

Calm down. Your comments are inaccurate. Some express bus lines are seeing more ridership than others. Additionally, express bus riders have made it clear that we do NOT want to be packed together like sardines. I spoke with higher ups about this and made it clear that we needed our full express bus service back, as did other advocates, and we won't accept anything less than that.

Overnight service is what it is. They are struggling to run the regular service, so they are focusing on that over overnight service, which is free.

You are better off figuring out how to secure your future than running 100% service for 30% of normal ridership. The new bus orders are a clue to what express bus service is going to be left. The Federal Reserve will bail out the MTA if needed, but it is not going to be free.

Not really. It's not as if all of those buses will be retired. The only thing being retired are the 2002 models and some of the 2005 and perhaps some others here and there. Some of the express buses are still fine. No need to retire those. Most of this order is for (MTA) Bus. The previous order saw about 505 express buses, but they were desperately needed. This time around, I'd say the number is fine. Out of 307 buses, 50 goes to Staten Island. The rest are for (MTA) Bus.
