mark1447 Posted October 29, 2008 Share #27 Posted October 29, 2008 I dont like helping tourist much, I can help them with *SOME* stuff, like directions, which Im very gd at in most parts of NYC. Sometimes I hate the fact that they want a picture of then with sumin behind or just them, they dont like it for the first 2-3, and gets me on my nerve... it also drives me nuts seeing double decker tour buses flying across 125th street after skool, and at 33rd street and 8th!!! aye... The stupidest thing is, when the approach u, they ask u a question for some place or an area, u ans them, then u notice they go to someone else, after u ans them wtf lol I dont mind my Floridian family cumming over here, they are my family and blood , even if they a tourist to finalize it, Im ok a lil with tourst, but note that you will experinse issues with them, rather then a cam B)
FamousNYLover Posted January 16, 2009 Author Share #28 Posted January 16, 2009 On Sunday, December 28th, 2008. There was one of Japanese guest named Osamu and his friend was coming to JFK Airport for first time, so he was asked to escourt her. I also offer him also. Since it was last day of Vintage V train, I escort him via to 74th St, to Queens Plaza. We took (V)intage V ride to 2nd Av, back to Queens Plaza, then got off at 47th-50th Sts. Then we had pizza at Sbarro, and Osamu bought me "Herbie, Fully Loaded" game boy advance for X-mas gift, then we headed on to 169th St. We stopped by Central Library to check Naoko's flight was ontime. So, it was. So, we cross street and made it to Q3 bus, which got to Terminal 4 early, than according to Q3 printed PDF schedule. So, we took Airtrain JFK Howard Beach to Terminal 8, where nice employee escorted us there to arrival meeting area. Since we still had time, he offer me lunch at Terminal 4 because only Terminal 4 was pre-securty food vendors, so we took Airtrain back to Terminal 4. At 45 minutes before the arrival, even with little late, we took all terminal airtrain back to Terminal 8. As we were waiting for Naoko, I was either playing Game Boy advance or checking the flight screen. After about past 20:00, Naoko show up. So, I offer her to hold her suitcase, and she was very happy. I rolled her suitcase through the Airtrain back to Terminal 4, then got nice ride on Hybrid Q10 bus to Kew Garden, then got on I think back to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Av/74th St-Broadway, for Flushing train to Junction Blvd. Only stair part, Osamu carry Naoko's suitcase because it was very heavey. On Monday the 29th, after I guided them at MET, they took me to Fanstiks, Broadway Musical as X-mas gift. It was my first musical experience. R32 Anthony Posted January 16, 2009 Share #29 Posted January 16, 2009 As a New Yorker, I do help tourists find their way around. Let's face it, out of New York, New Yorkers are not really liked. I lived in Chicago and I been told we are nasty. I try to somewhat disprove that stereotype because we are the best citizens in the world and I think we have to set a positive example. I enjoy telling people the history of certain landmarks, places, etc. I would like to see tourists going home and telling people, New Yorkers are really nice and respectable people. Besides, how would we feel if we were in another city and needed help. One hand does wash another. Believe it or not, I had tourists tip me for the information I gave. I don't expected it, and I tell them they don't have to do it, but what can I do? It is what it is.
Joe Posted January 16, 2009 Share #30 Posted January 16, 2009 Whenever I spot the look of lost on peoples faces, i'll ask them if they need any help getting around. If i've got time, i'll go with them to where they need to go. To be honest, I kind of like showing people around.
SevenEleven Posted January 16, 2009 Share #31 Posted January 16, 2009 Sometimes, I find myself being a tourist (even in NYC) so I help out a tourist as long as they ask me about a place I know about. If not, I either tell them what subway/buses right near whatever streets they're heading for.
MattTrain Posted January 17, 2009 Share #32 Posted January 17, 2009 Helping tourists in the subway is always fun for me. I often get asked for directions to the Empire State Building, Grand Central, Times Square, and even in the airport. I try to give tourists and anyone unfamiliar with the subways the shortest and easiest way around. Of course, I have to consider the corridors, stairs, ramps, elevators, escalators, fare booths and types of entry points (turnstiles) for subway stations. That I have to talk to tourists about. Another thing I'd tell tourists is to follow the signs for the route they'd like to take. For example, a person looks for a train at Times Square. I'd tell that person to follow that sign. If he or she is still uncertain, I'd take him or her or that group to the platform for that specific route. Of course, I do have instances where I carry extra subway maps so I give those to them as well. I like helping tourists, whenever I get the chance. MTR Admiralty Posted January 17, 2009 Share #34 Posted January 17, 2009 If they are really annoying and always walk slow in front of a dozen busy New Yorkers, the NO. If they bury their faces with their NYC map or a subway map or some not-that-reliable travelbook, no. If they are too stuck-up, no. So generally no, unless I feel like taking pity on them.
