Just fantasy idea.

Create Bus Transitway for entire length of 125th St from Morningside Av to 1st Av.

Non-bus eastbound traffic will be using Hancock Place from 125th St to Malcolm X Blvd, then 122nd St to Mad Av, 124th St to Bridge, or 1st Av-bound go via 2nd Av, 120th St, 1st Av including for Willis Av Bridge.

Bus change.

M35 Manhattan Pattern:

Island-bound will turn left at 125th St Busway after picking up passenger at current stop, making same stop as M60/M100/Bx15 to 2nd Av, then going over Triboro Bridge and return trip will use 125th St, turn right at 3rd Av, turn left at 127th St, then terminate.

M100: Extend service to LGA via M60 to create M100 Select Bus Service, while local buses remain normal and and terminate at normal terminal. M100 will use same Orion Bus from Bee-Line Express Bus with compartment above it.

Following stops on M101SBS.

The 125th Street Corridor is madness for traffic. I was on the BX15 once, the bus inched to the nearest signal. Stopped. Then it started. Stopped at the stop. Tried to fight its way back to the traffic. Stuck. Moved with others on the green (half a block away) stopped in front of the signal. *Repeat*

I'm not sure how a 125th Street Busway would work, but I'm pretty sure, if you force all other cars to use other streets, the locals would be fuming.

In my fantasy, 125th St will be Buses Only.

There will be special traffic sensor for bus only left turn signal (similar to what M4/Q32 bus will do at 34th St/7th Av.)

How? Isn't 125th St. where the Triboro Bridge ramps are? Making 125th bus-only would be impossible then.

There are lots of stores on 125th Street commercial or business buildings like MLB Network studios so its impossible.

  • 1 year later...

Rather than close 125th St to traffic, establish something similar to 34th St. Instead of having the bus lane in the right lane, I picture the bus lane being in the left lanes, with a center island at each bus stop. The outer lane will be for non buses, with no left turns allowed. There can be loading/unloading zones along the curb at sections of the roadway away from the bus stops. Combine that with heavier enforcement against blocking the box at 125th st and bus traffic should be able to run much faster.
