Orion V CNG Question

As I was looking through some pics, I stumbled across this one:

http://www.ttmg.org/photos/tlogan/MTAB_Orion_7253.jpg

1) Why does this bus have LED signs?

2) Are there any more buses like these?

3) Do you think LEDs fit the Orion V's?

Personally, I don't like them, because I'm used to seeing the flipdots on these and the LEDs on the MCIs.

But what do you think?

That sign was put in the bus when it was ran by Triboro. Command 4961 which is now (MTA) Bus 737 had LED signs but they were removed when the (MTA) took over command.

I've seen that bus several times, once under Triboro, and two I believe under (MTA) Bus. I think it looks better with the LEDs rather than the flipdots, just looks more modern and easier to see.

@nycbusfan: Do you know why (MTA) removed them?

For the record, the bus number while it was at Triboro was 3039. This is a pic of it on the Q39. For some reason, the signs would come out weird on that bus (note that "RIDGEWOOD" is not centered in the pic:

IIRC, there were three Orion V CNG's with the LED signs. Two at TCC and one at Command.

The two at TCC had a programming display problem in which the font was always small on the front distination sign. Also, the rear signs almost never worked.

When MTAB took over, they had a vendor come in and reprogram them and also adjust the fonts.

I think there were 2 at Command. I only recall 1 at Triboro. Green Lines as well as the few MCI D4500s New York Bus Service also had a different sign program too until they were taken over by the MTA.

Here is a pic of a NYBS MCI D4500:
