Guest Charles Posted October 31, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 31, 2008 As I was looking through some pics, I stumbled across this one: http://www.ttmg.org/photos/tlogan/MTAB_Orion_7253.jpg 1) Why does this bus have LED signs? 2) Are there any more buses like these? 3) Do you think LEDs fit the Orion V's? Personally, I don't like them, because I'm used to seeing the flipdots on these and the LEDs on the MCIs. But what do you think?
RokuSix 3 Posted October 31, 2008 Share #2 Posted October 31, 2008 I like it better. These can be seen from a greater distance.

Command 4961 which is now Bus 737 had LED signs but they were removed when the took over command.
7LineFan 256 Posted November 1, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 1, 2008 I've seen that bus several times, once under Triboro, and two I believe under Bus. I think it looks better with the LEDs rather than the flipdots, just looks more modern and easier to see. @nycbusfan: Do you know why removed them? Q25toJamaica 9 Posted November 1, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 1, 2008 It's the only V CNG to have it.
PATCOman 196 Posted November 1, 2008 Share #6 Posted November 1, 2008 For the record, the bus number while it was at Triboro was 3039. This is a pic of it on the Q39. For some reason, the signs would come out weird on that bus (note that "RIDGEWOOD" is not centered in the pic:
R32 3348 11 Posted November 2, 2008 Share #7 Posted November 2, 2008 I like it. It seems more appealing. BTW, I;ve realized how much I iss the PBL colors on the buses, especially considering I live right next to two Triboro Coach bus routes...
Guest MTA Bus Posted November 2, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 2, 2008 I Think That LEDs Work Good On The Orion 5 cng Because You Are Able To Read The Destation Sign More Cleary
Cait Sith 9,631 Posted November 3, 2008 Share #9 Posted November 3, 2008 in the new blue/white paint scheme, these LED wont work. In the PBL Scheme, however, it would look awesome

7LineFan 256 Posted November 8, 2008 Share #12 Posted November 8, 2008 Reminds me of the original flipdisc signs on the ex-Green Bus Orions. Would have been easier to see... why did remove them?
JustLok 18 Posted November 9, 2008 Share #13 Posted November 9, 2008 IIRC, there were three Orion V CNG's with the LED signs. Two at TCC and one at Command. The two at TCC had a programming display problem in which the font was always small on the front distination sign. Also, the rear signs almost never worked. When MTAB took over, they had a vendor come in and reprogram them and also adjust the fonts.
PATCOman 196 Posted November 9, 2008 Share #14 Posted November 9, 2008 I think there were 2 at Command. I only recall 1 at Triboro. Green Lines as well as the few MCI D4500s New York Bus Service also had a different sign program too until they were taken over by the MTA. Here is a pic of a NYBS MCI D4500:

That bus as well as the other five MCI D4500's that NYBS had were renumbered into the 7400 sieries and are still in service.
