Given the extremely high subsidies and accusations of bias in areas served, I was just wondering if the City would try to force MTA to take it over.

Given the MTA's lovely management of funds, I'm sure that'd be great for the ferry. /s

Any updates on the Coney Island ferry? Heard it was delayed again.

Per the NYC Ferry website:

EFFECTIVE TUESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2021

The Soundview Ferry route has been extended from Soundview (Clasons Point) to Ferry Point Park (Throgs Neck).

https://www.ferry.nyc/blog/soundview-route-expansion/

STARTING MONDAY, JANUARY 24TH, YEAR-ROUND NYC FERRY SERVICE TO-AND-FROM GOVERNORS ISLAND WILL BEGIN ON THE SOUTH BROOKLYN ROUTE!

Until the Coney Island route launches, Governors Island will be a stop in between Sunset Park/Brooklyn Army Terminal and Red Hook/Atlantic Basin. On summer weekends, NYC Ferry will continue to serve Governors Island as a dedicated shuttle from Pier 11. Additionally, Governors Island will continue to run summer weekend shuttles from Brooklyn Bridge Park-Pier 6 and Red Hook.

When NYC Ferry’s Coney Island route launches in late 2022, the South Brooklyn route will terminate at Governors Island. Bay Ridge will become part of the new Coney Island Route to provide direct faster access to Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan and Sunset Park will continue to have express service to Pier 11 on the Rockaway route.

This plan is entirely stupid. Why would the SB route go to Bay Ridge on weekends but not weekdays when ridership is higher?

It makes a lot of sense. If you read it carefully, it says Summer Weekends, which is when demand is higher. Demand drops considerably on some lines during the colder months. With the wind in the winter at that terminal and nowhere to really wait to shield yourself from the elements, it is understandable why fewer people ride in the colder months.

Anyone know the ridership of the SI ferry route during the day. On the 9:05 PM ferry from SI and other then me, there is only one more passenger who got off at the WFC. So I’m the only passenger on board.

Coney Island Route Update:

Due to immense opposition from the community, the original location for the Coney Island ferry stop in Fraiser Park has been abandoned, leaving behind a door to the abyss. The terminal was constructed and then removed not even a month later, effectively cancelling the entire route project, so don’t be surprised if the route never comes to reality.

EDIT: any mention of the Coney Island route has also been removed from the ferry.nyc website.

Now they doing to much.

They should have left LES the way it was and not made SB into this mess of a route.

They should add a stop at the World's Fair Marina/Flushing Bay and just have a shuttle take them to Flushing-Main St (7). The route should probably just run Wall St > 34th > Astoria > Soundview/Classon Point > Flushing. With maybe a stop at College Point. I'm sure people would think of it as a nice alternative to the Subway and to the section of Queens.

Doubt it, especially with all of the hoops you gotta go through just to get to the ferry with that proposal.

Meant to post this last month, so apologies for the late post.

SUMMER UPDATES

Per the NYC Ferry website:

South Brooklyn Faster Connections Expanded to Evening Service

Starting Monday, July 17th, NYC Ferry’s South Brooklyn route will expand its morning Faster Connections service to offer most riders a faster weekday evening commute when traveling from Wall Street/Pier 11, making commutes quicker and easier for New Yorkers. With this schedule change, NYC Ferry’s South Brooklyn “Faster Connections” will now be available on weekdays from 6:15am-10:15am and 3:30pm-8:00pm.

There is one difference with the evening service.

We added a stop at Governors Island during the afternoon commute to give students, workers, and leisure travelers who went to Governors Island from Bay Ridge or Atlantic Ave/Pier 6 a return trip home before Governors Island closes each evening. The afternoon service to and from Bay Ridge still provides a 20-minute travel time savings to riders going to/from Pier 11.

https://www.ferry.nyc/blog/south-brooklyn-faster-connections-pilot/

Introducing the Rockaway Reserve

Starting July 1st, NYC Ferry riders can reserve a spot on any weekend Rockaway trips to the beach from 9am-2pm and back from 3pm-8pm. Reserved tickets cost $10 and are available for purchase up to 2 weeks before the date of each departure, so plan ahead and get your tickets early! Most spots on each vessel are un-reserved so riders paying a $4.00 regular fare, $2.75 as part of the ten-pack or $1.35 discount will be able to ride normally. Reserved tickets are available for purchase in the NYC Ferry app for travel to/from Rockaway via both Wall Street/Pier 11 and Sunset Park/Brooklyn Army Terminal.

https://www.ferry.nyc/blog/rockaway-reserve-tickets/

The Rockaway Rocket Returns

The Rockaway Rocket Returns on August 12th! Tickets are now available for sale in the NYC Ferry App.

The Rockaway Rocket will run for a limited time between Brooklyn Bridge Park/Pier 6 (Atlantic Avenue) and Rockaway. Beat the lines and the heat with a guaranteed spot on a ferry going directly from Brooklyn Bridge Park/Pier 6 to Rockaway for $10. Tickets for the first weekend are for sale now on the NYC Ferry app.

Though there should be a Whitestone Ferry stop. You can literally see the Throgs Neck stop, so why nothing for Whitestone or College Point? The landing could be at that property at the end of 152nd St and 6th Road, where there could be a parking lot and a bus terminal stand.

Of course now, theres gonna need to be a "Faster Connections" service for the Soundview route since I'm sure once Rikers is gone they're gonna add a stop there.

In addition, I propose a new "Canarsie Route", running as follows:

Canarsie Pier

Rockaway

Sheepshead Bay (Ocean Avenue)

Shore Acres (Staten Island-Von Briesen Pk at the foot of the VNB)

Tompkinsville

Brooklyn Army Terminal (Rockaway route will now stop at Bay Ridge with a timed connection to the South Brooklyn route for the connection to BAT)

Pier 11.
