This is part of a study for future electric fleet options. Very exciting 😁 Edit: just got a reply from Nice that they will also be looking at the latest electric models from Proterra and Gillig Edited April 9, 2021 by Railfanner Jake

User Posted April 15, 2021 Share #3 Posted April 15, 2021 Why is NICE testing a 35-foot instead of a 40-foot bus? They should just put a demo XE40 in service at some point and see how it performs with all-day usage around the system. Ideally, it should be able to handle a driver's paddle without needing a re-charge at the depot. The other question is whether NICE would/could place electric chargers in different areas around the system for regeneration. For example, Hempstead Transit Center might not be such a bad idea for layovers.
Railfanner Jake Posted April 15, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted April 15, 2021 The 35 foot is a company demo that has been touring around recently. Someone had a picture of this bus in Suffolk County which makes me presume that they got a demo of this as well. More than likely what New Flyer had at the moment. They will probably get a demo after evaluating Gillig and Proterras options. They should really test all three for a 3 month pilot or so. Run one Proterra, one Gillig and one New flyer, get the feedback and see what's preferred best. As for charging spaces, depots and hubs both would be great for charging.
NewFlyer 230 Posted April 15, 2021 Share #5 Posted April 15, 2021 I would imagine NICE would have to build many charging stations for locations possibly like, Freeport, maybe RFM, Hicksville, HTC, Jamaica and Flushing.
danielhg121 Posted April 15, 2021 Share #6 Posted April 15, 2021 It's unfortunate that they didn't get them earlier back when temperatures were lower so they could see how it performed in all seasons. Mileage may vary.
