NYCTA track worker - called off test 5016...

I just got a letter in the mail telling me to show up next week for pre-interview and med testing - and I'm wondering what to expect from the hiring process? How fast does it happen? Will I have to go back a few days later for more paperwork, etc? Do they start up classes immediately or do i get to wait around a few weeks?

Anyone know what the average day (or night) of a track worker is like? I have a vague sense of what they do from seein' them around the system over the years but am interested in some detail...

Thanks well in advance. I'm hoping it works out considering the economy. They sent me the same letter last year but i was gainfully employed at the time, and now I was just laid off 2 months ago, so it'd be good timing...

Track has many different things that you may end up doing. Most of there work is done overnight but it is a good job. The MOW department takes much better care of it's employees than RTO.

i've seen the job description, it says he nuts and bolts of it but doesn't say much about hours, when, where, etc. i'm assuming it's mostly night hours? are there RDOs & (I assume) yards you're based out of regularly, or are you just at the whim of whereever/whenever work needs to be done?

You'll be assigned a specific gang which comes out of certain track quarters located all over the system. You will get 2 rdo's in a row but you won't know what they are until you start.

You will have many many days where you will report directly to the work site.

*sigh*

Just a few days after getting the first letter saying to show up next week, I get another one today stating that the class has been canceled, not to show up next week, but my name will still be on the list.

Total mental tease.

This is from another message board a few months ago, this guy got hired in August from DSNY,he used to be a track worker for the MTA.

"no degree but i work for nyc transit. Top pay there will be ABOUT 60 g's in 2 yrs. DSNY IS 67 G'S BASE PAY, MORE WHEN YOU DO CERTAIN JOBS THERE......DONT GET ME WRONG I LIKE BEING IN TRANIST (TRACK) I AM ONLY ON THE TRACKS 3 OR 4 HRS A DAY BUT DSNY ALSO HAS UNLIMITED SICK (JUST IN CASE), MORE VACATION TIME & 20 AND OUT (NYCTA 25/55). OLD TIMERS IN TRANSIT TELL ME TO GO TO DSNY THAT ITS A BETTER JOB AND IF THEY DIDNT HAVE SO MUCH TIME ON THE JOB THEY WOULD GO. SO I AM GONNA TRY IT OUT IF I REALLY HATE IT I HAVE 1 YR TO GO BACK TO TRANSIT."

What's your point? Everyone who knows anything knows that sanitation is the best job in the city. Track workers don't make 60 grand more closer to 50. They make more, do less work have a better pension, have unlimited sick, and work for an agency that appreciates rather than HATES its employees.

FDNY is the best job in the city for your information they do not work 5 days a week. Also DSNY only got their 20 and out pension due to Mayor Bloomberg who loves DSNY.

FDNY you work 2 days with 3 days off if you work 1 24 hour tour its automatically 3 days off. If I had a chance and could make a time machine I would be in FDNY.

As far as track workers they are a strong division I always hear good things about them they are more united than the entire Local 100 lol.

FDNY you risk your life Sanitation you do not. And they make the same money and have the same pension!!!!! Saniataion workers have gyms, showers, and other ammentities to use because they only work between 3-4 hours a day.

The most united division in local 100 has always been Surface and it always will be. Mow hs lots of infighting between the departments.

Fire houses have gyms and showers as well shoot theres even entertainment rooms in Fire houses. There pension is the same with the 20 years and out the pay is not my father was a 23 year veteran firefighter. I have been hanging out in firehouses since I was 8 years old, firemen have way more amenities than you think.

I know the deal my brother is a NYC firefighter. He never wanted to be anything else since he was a kid. That is the type of job firefighter is. While sanitation is for anyone that just wants a good paying job with an ecellent pension. The top pay is almost the same.

It's just my opinion along with most people that sanitation is the best of the city jobs. This was the first lesson I learned on my first day of college and after researching it myself I came to completely agree.

Im with you too man. I learned/heard that DSNY is the best city job one can get.

I started last year, I went straight to Capital days. My RDO's are Monday and Tuesday.

From Wedsnday to Friday it's 8:00am to 4:00pm

On the weekends it's 5:00am or 6:00am to 7:00 pm to 8:00pm

...

You should have taken the job, it's great.

I left my other job after 20 years. I don't regret it one bit.

Damn, I wish you luck.

This happened to me with the Sanitation exam 21 years ago.

I passed it but then they had the hiring freeze.

Don't let it slip away, keep after them.

Do you remember if they extended the list that you were on after the hiring freeze was over? I know that in the 90's they did it with a lottery system,up until 1999. I am on the current DSNY list but my list number is too high(#5,6XX) to get a call. I have to improve my score when the next exam is given(2011).
