Here's some stats regarding covid recovery and ridership levels compared to 2019 figures from the excel files provided. I'm going to split them into several posts because they're pretty long. I'll start with various recovery stats for the local bus. I will later post similar info for express buses, and then the typical gain/loss stats.

Years ago, we would have extensive discussions on these ridership stats.... Recent years however, not so much - including even before 2020...

To experience the systematic breakdown of citywide bus usage over the past few decades is very disturbing, to say the least....

For me personally/specifically, what hits home is the stark difference in current patronage on the B41, compared how it used to be patronized 20+ years ago - and this was WITH the dollar vans running along the B41 from Smith St. on down to Kings Plaza too, picking up heavy in their own right....

I would laugh, but it's quite sad (not the top 10 thing, but how the M100's been bastardized to what it recently turned into).... The Bx15 may not make a top 10 or whatever, but I'm less concerned about that route & moreso with the M100.... The Bx15 between The Hub & Fordham Plaza is still a solid route.... Cutting the M100 at 125th/Amsterdam OTOH is an obvious stub - being that the vast majority of the demand for 125th st in general lies east of Amsterdam.....

As far as I'm concerned, the B41 has had a history of being inadequate for Flatbush Avenue simply for the inherent limitations of a bus route with respect to addressing demand, but there have been no concrete plans to solve this problem. Instead, it's only been exacerbated over the years with no end in sight. It's a damn shame, as I really don't think COVID put nearly as much of a dent in demand for transit service on the corridor as some might claim.

The M100 actually ends at St. Nicholas Avenue, though that's still not saying too much.

Covid did much of nothing for the demand for the B41, as the damage was done well before the fact.... I'd even argue the damage was done before the infamous 2010 cuts....

Of course there were always riders that bolted for the subway at the Junction from points south, but I can't exactly pinpoint when that exodus occurred of (even more) riders south of the Junction bolting for the subway, instead of taking B41's downtown (you being much closer to the Junction than I am, you may be able to shed more light on that).... Still think about it to this day..... Some may think this, but it wasn't just the advent of the expansion/massive improvement to the quality of service on the B103, because that route isn't exactly carrying crushloads to/from Downtown on a consistent basis...... Here in 2022 (having grown up in the 90's, remembering what the B41 used to be usage-wise), I still find myself saying (to myself) wtf happened to this route; all these nearly empty B41's (either direction) around 5-7 pm passing through Church.....

These stats make a lot of sense. The neighborhoods that have lots of essential workers naturally have seen ridership return faster. On the BxM2, a chunk of the ridership now is Mount Sinai people. Midtown not as much, as those people are either hybrid or working from home. The BxM1 is doing better, but I would say you still have people traveling often for leisure trips. Some truth to that with the BxM18 as well.

There are also days where ridership seems to be higher overall. Monday and Friday less so, with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday seeing more ridership.

Yeah, and downtown routes in general were expected to not bounce back as fast for a similar reason.

I also wonder to what effect people switching over to the express bus had on ridership gains. I haven't really look at that data all too well yet from the table, but I presume that there might be some influence there with some of the gains, nothing too over the top though.

Also worth noting that the QM1 and QM7 lost riders in 2021, however I do recall there being a lot of missing/cancelled trips on those two routes, and QM1/QM5 and QM7/QM8 combo trips last year, and even earlier this year. The SIM2 is also another one that lost ridership (and had a good chunk of cancelled trips).

It is something that I follow very closely and started doing in 2018 when I became fed up arriving late to work and having no bus to get home because of the high level of cancellations, so my group does monitor it. Considering how much service was cancelled in general last year, I think the ridership numbers are actually pretty good. There were days where some lines like the BM5 saw a gap of a three hour wait between buses.

Something else you should note is that they also tend to post the cancelled express bus trips (something I pushed hard for - Staten Island being the exception because of their manpower shortage), but the local bus trips are generally not posted, and I am pretty sure that service was cut on the local lines too. The only local bus line that I used here and there with any regularity last year was the M34 and I can recall quite a few instances (weekdays and weekends) where I planned my arrival on the schedule and there was no bus at all. I found the M34 to be the worst out of the two branches, with the M34A being more reliable.

Could it be the free transfers offered by Metrocard Gold, which removed the incentive to stay on the bus on one fare, followed by Vision Zero (which mysteriously slowed down ALL traffic, decreasing bus speeds and ridership)?

Lol... This happened well after the metrocard was introduced & well before vision zero took place in this city, so no.....

Based on the timeline, my guesses would be either the massive post 9/11 exodus of jobs from Downtown (and the transformation into a more residential district) or the transit strike.
