2ride Posted November 20, 2023 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2023 Hi, So I’ve been called to come in to NYCT for pre employment processing for part time traffic checker position. I’ve also taken the station agent exam this year and passed it as well. My question right now is what are the chances that I can get pulled from the station agent list as a traffic checker? Will it work similarly or same way as people getting pulled off conductor list for transit cleaner?

They can only promote checkers with 1 year of satisfactory probation to cleaner since cleaner is a labor class title and non competitive. If you accept traffic checker and get called for station agent you will have to resign from traffic checker at 180. Also be aware that since traffic checking is "part time" if you were to leave and try coming back to that title they may not honor that since they don't have to follow the 1 year time frame as other normal civil service jobs have. Only full time checkers get that privilege Edited November 20, 2023 by Biggie adding info

I suppose the list remains active for 4 years right?

You most likely have a month timeframe cause thats when they are going to try processing the people they called now for Day 2 before class.

I was thinking I can go in even in 2 years from now since civil service list doesn’t expire until the 4th year timeframe is up.

While a competitive list lasts years, it only gets certified (pulled) for possible appointments ever so often. When they call you, you can appear & go through the process. Or not show up & get likely removed from the pull list of candidates. If you are removed, you have the right to reinstate your name on the list. Biggie advised you well, if you contact them likely they can give you a near term date if you can't make the appointment. If you don't process, or no show likely you may get dropped off the eligible list until you reinstate.. However, you will have to wait for another certification (pull) from the list. And these can take a while. His advice on Checkers/Station Agents is also very informative on the process. Good luck. How well you did on the SA Exam, when they score it, when they establish a list & when it gets certified will all determine how long it will take to get to you on that (potential) future list.

How do I reinstate? @Biggie also I’m working full time right now at post office. If I trade it for traffic checker, is it worth the trade in the long run? I don’t wanna make dumb switches that will make me regret later on. Any advice is helpful unless getting promoted to cleaners from traffic checker means I can get pulled from a civil service list… Edited November 20, 2023 by 2ride

You are employed & can wait the duration for a full time entry at TA when the time comes & you're called for something that is full time. If you're on a civil service list, you can reinstate by contacting dcas. Once you have been removed from outgoing certifications. You can be on multiple lists, and seek the best/most desired for yourself if you can wait it out.

But yeah Go for something bigger and better. You say full time assuming you're a regular and can bid. so depending on your craft/bid, when its time for MTA stuff you can deal with it without interfering with PO TIME. Are you at the station or plant?

Basically in traffic checking the shortest tour is 5 hours which are the rapid surveys. You will begin and end at 2 Broadway. The next common task are surface point checks with the buses which are 6 hours. You can be sent ANYWHERE in this city even places like College Point and you can't leave until supervision collects the work. The other jobs are 7 hours long such as G.O Support or Bus Stop Management but for those jobs you need a few years in title. As for financial compensation the most one will see in traffic checking is 900 and change bi weekly with a full time 7 hour tour. On average being in the field doing surveys you will be seeing 600-750 bi weekly. As for the reinstatement question the issue is they don't have to follow civil service laws since this is a non civil service title. Your title will be Traffic Checker (Parttime) and they will do a lot of shady stuff cause of that part time status. Such examples are is you have a paid day off you will only be compensated 4 hours instead of your regular tour hours, or having to leave traffic checking cause the hours interfere with your other job and not being able to come back. The AGS will tell everybody the day they start that if you have another job and it interferes with transits time your gonna have to kiss TA goodbye or the other job cause they want the traffic checking job to take priority in your life. Traffic checking is basically transit purgatory, you will have to deal with BS from passengers, the favoritism in that department, and the non existent union reps if you were to get into a jam. Now for the CTA promotion once you hit 1 year you get a paper to sign for cleaner. They pick who goes to cleaner. There are people who started 10 years ago and never got called and are still part time so its a gamble. The other paths that can be taken is opting to go to full time checker. which again they choose who becomes full time. Also as a full timer OT doesn't start until you work 35 hours in a week, as for part time you won't get paid times and a half until after the 8th hour so you will still work an extra hour at your regular rate. For summary if you are making decent money and full time in another job this wouldn't be an ideal choice especially if you are n list for other titles. If you want to try it talk to the post master if you are able to come back within a specific time frame.
