NYtransit 457 Posted December 7, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 7, 2008 ive been hearing that it was proposed to make the R44 get early retire, after they make 38-39 years of service, they might just retire because some there failed trucks,or the subway car just failed.but im not sure if this is true because the MTA is in debt.but this can conclude why the R44 is getting replaced by R179's in 2009/2010:rolleyes: do you think this is true? RokuSix 3 Posted December 7, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 7, 2008 With their money situation, they can't afford to retire cars that still have the potential for service. They'd be better off keeping them until they really hit the floor.

Paul P 0 Posted December 8, 2008 Share #7 Posted December 8, 2008 Why would yo want to retire them anyway? I love those trains, especially the brake release sounds!
Kexpress 0 Posted December 8, 2008 Share #8 Posted December 8, 2008 The R44 will stay until the R179 replaces them. I don't know if the R179 be deliverd between 2010-2013 or 2013-2016?

MTR Admiralty 4 Posted December 11, 2008 Share #12 Posted December 11, 2008 Don't even think about it for now. The R179s are not even ordered yet. The MTA has to get the final designs, select a builder, get the cars built and then have them delivered and then get tested. Then put them in service. This could happen in the next decade. Not now. Don't get over-excited. And plus, isn't the MTA in fiscal trouble?

R421969 0 Posted December 14, 2008 Share #19 Posted December 14, 2008 The R44's In my opinion were ahead of their time, I mean, the shape and stuff, they ride so smooth ( not in the rockaways) and the interior is the same since it was since it came out. St Louis car company had it man...too bad the dam trucks had their issues.

MTR Admiralty 4 Posted December 14, 2008 Share #24 Posted December 14, 2008 Yeah, one of the SOAC back end of the car made me think that it is a R-44 or R-46 when it is really a SOAC car! I agree! What I like best about the R44s and the R46s (as well as the hippos) is the seat arrangement. I LOVE the window seats! They're really comfy.
