R44 5278 Posted January 2, 2009 Share #26 Posted January 2, 2009 The R68s feature a red sticker on the storm doors, while R68As do not. Also, the ride on an R68A feels like that of a R44, which is much quieter and has firm suspension when hitting 50 mph. The ride of an R68 is like that of an R62 whereas you can hear it loudly when the wheels run on the track joints. Otherwise, these cars are very well built and have extremely comfortable rides with the bucket/transversed seatings.
MTR Admiralty Posted January 2, 2009 Share #27 Posted January 2, 2009 Also The R142 and R142A have completely different truck designs, different HVAC systems (R142's is louder), plus the cab windows are shaped slightly different between the two cars. Also the front of the cabs, on an R142 it's two piece construction, on the R142A it's one piece construction. The best way to point this out is to look below the LED as an R142 is going by and you will see a seam underneath the bonnet The HVAC is good enough. You can tell if the train is a R142 when it comes just by the HVAC.

MTR Admiralty Posted January 2, 2009 Share #29 Posted January 2, 2009 Just listing some of the other differences out since some asked... Yeah... I thought this is a hippo thread, how did we manage to get up to talking about R142s?
SubwayGuy Posted January 2, 2009 Share #30 Posted January 2, 2009 Yeah... I thought this is a hippo thread, how did we manage to get up to talking about R142s? Not sure...probably differences between R68/A ended up turning into differences between all similar car classes.

Joe Posted January 2, 2009 Share #32 Posted January 2, 2009 Why are they called hippos?
MTR Admiralty Posted January 2, 2009 Share #33 Posted January 2, 2009 Why are they called hippos? IIRC, they weigh a lot and move slower compared to the older cars in the system. They are called that by some railfanners and possibly some crew members.
