Trainspotter Posted January 5, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 5, 2009 Furious over weekend disruptions on the No. train, business owners and community leaders from western Queens Sunday called on the MTA to provide shuttle buses to Manhattan. "The people who work here, the people who are trying to start businesses here [are suffering] greatly," said Councilman Eric Gioia (D-Queens), who led a rally in Hunters Point Sunday. Due to construction, the No. line isn't running under the East River on weekends. Riders have to take shuttle busses to Queensboro Plaza, where the train takes them to and from Manhattan. In Long Island City and other up-and-coming neighborhoods, the musical chairs routine has local restaurants, theaters and Realtors fretting that Manhattan residents will stay away. John Hoban, the line's deputy general manager, said it would be too expensive to ferry passengers to and from Manhattan. "That would be a tremendous [cost]," Hoban said. Forest Glen Posted January 6, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 6, 2009 Only a small section of the 7 line is affected. There are other transit options in the area. People are being over dramatic.
FlushingExpress Posted January 6, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 6, 2009 what can riders do about it? the 7 is a heavily used line that needs to be constantly maintained to provide good service when baseball season resumes in April.

After all the switches and tracks have to be in good condition.

MTR Admiralty Posted January 7, 2009 Share #8 Posted January 7, 2009 Here is my answer: DEAL WITH IT. I know it sucks but, there are other options and the MTA is not doing this for nothing. The tracks and switches must be maintained and this is the time to do it. The MTA wants to expedite the work before the Mets begin their season. FamousNYLover Posted January 10, 2009 Share #10 Posted January 10, 2009 Slightly off-topic, MTA and New York Water Taxi or NY Waterway should work together and have free ferry shuttle service between Hunters Point and East 34 St during GO. New York Waterway ferry shuttle bus could escort passengers to Grand Central, 5th Av and Times Sq.
metsfan Posted January 10, 2009 Share #11 Posted January 10, 2009 What exactly are they working on the the ?General track improvements or what? They are extending the line west, then south from times square. On weekends the line is halted for up to 2 hours at a time to do things that would mess up the signal system, or require the 3rd rail shut off if it were to be done with trains running on the line. - A
