That's because a bomb threat sent to the mayor of Emerson touched off a wave of school closings in nearly a dozen towns. I went to the NYC public schools up until grade 8, and that kind of behavior really isn't that unusual. For example, when I was in grade 5 at I. S. 216, several of the kids in my class (10 years old, they were) left the building at lunchtime and set fire to a vacant building down on Prospect. I'm not impressed.
