LTA1992 Posted January 22, 2009 Share #26 Posted January 22, 2009 Given the fact that the tunnel will have to dive under the Manhattan Bridge approach, it won't work. The train would have to negotiate sharp grades in order to duck under the approach tracks and will be slowed down. This is already exhibited on the F line SB when it has to duck under the PATH before West 4th. By the way, the tunnel ends around Pell Street, it doesn't continue past there. Otherwise, we might see a station built, given your description. The slows down just before West Fouth because of the switches it has to go through. Same with the lines at the same spot. Second, the new tunnel dosent have to have a steep grade to duck under the Manhattan Bridge tracks, it can be a long, smooth grade. It may be deep anyway because of the fact that in the future, it will go under the river. If the first subway could be made by hand in 1900-04, this can be done. Tbirdbassist Posted January 23, 2009 Author Share #27 Posted January 23, 2009 Yea, it wouldn't be a great engineering feat, like say the maze which is the Times Square Complex. But it would be a lot of work and monitoring of the manhat tunnel. It's money that doesn't have to be spent since the only benefit would be two double cross overs. If it were to be done, the 2nd Avenue tracks to alleviate the "dive" could be built on a grade starting maybe mid station and at the south end a stair could be built (like at Chambers St on the JMZ at the south end)since ramp a ramp would be steep/dangerous/stupid. But again, it would be a lot of work for just the benefits of a dual crossover. Also isn't the SAS planned to possibly go to Brooklyn? I think the Wiki article says that... but it's wiki. No service to Brooklyn but...if all goes well the Second Avenue Line should go in the Bronx and continue to Gun Hill Road. But that will be done when we have the first gay president in 2080! No I am talking about north of West 4th. There aren't any switches on the C or the E north of West 4th. The PATH tracks are about the same level as the F from 23rd to around 8th. The downtown F has to dive down a bit because the PATH tracks has to turn to the right to hit Christopher. The F can't be on the same level. It would be an obstruction. So after the F passes under, it joins to meet the expresses at West 4th.
