INDman Posted January 26, 2009 Share #26 Posted January 26, 2009 I have never really had a problem with this mainly because when some one asks why I know when a station was built or a car class and they go why do you know that, I ask them the stats of a baseball or football player. When you're 9-17 everyone has the same 5 interests: sports, music, tv, movies, pop culture. that's it. honest advice, anything else you're interested in, might as well keep it to yourself and go pursue it on your own because all everyone is trying to do at that age is fit in. you might as well do the same as long as you're being true to yourself. and believe me the guy that gets into a bar fight because he doesn't like the sports team someone else is waring a hat of is a heck of a lot worse than the transit buff that's a little weird but for the most part leaves people alone. the ones that fight about which car class are better are actually quite similar to the ones who fight about whos the best quarterback in the NFL. the difference is one is more "socially acceptable" than the other. but once you leave high school you can be who you want to be so afer that none of it matters anyway. DOB great post, that last part had me rolling. the common theme is girls really don't want to hear much about trains OR sports so might as well find some different and actually interesting (to them) things to talk to them about... We're not exactly compassionate and we have these stupid ideals as to what a guy "should" be. But any girl who's worth your two cents shouldn't judge you because of a hobby. Eventually quite a few people in my grade got to know me as the mta nerd, subway freak, mta guru, train obsessor, etc. That was bad enough, but what's worse is that twelve and thirteen year olds act so stuck up that they basically one-up themsevles when putting you down. Not to mention the bad jokes...if I ever hear someone tell me to go **** off to subway porn I will slit their throat and shove them off a cliff...sorry, had to be said... Then I shut my mouth (not like I ever opened it much either) because I found out that I'm not gonna last to senior year like this. Two years since then it's worked wonders. Yes. Yes it has. This should inspire you all, and not make any of you who might secretly feel awkward, different, or no one will understand your hobby, feel that way. For those of you males who get circled by females calling you names, just tell them this geek has enough train to fill their tunnels. Then look at them and say maybe not, only a tractor trailer can their giant battered bruised tunnels....... Ohh I get flamed all the time for my hobby, and I flame them back. My grandma just found out I was into buses and she done told everybody, and once they started making fun of me, boy did they wish they didn't do that.. I tell them something like this.. "Aiight so I take pictures and videos of buses and trains. I don't jump people for thier iPods nor do I smoke or do any drugs, this is my thing not yours so back the .... up." On the other hand, I went to college in upstate New York with a lot of people from the boonies and suburbs. Great people, but they'd never understand my transit "thing." He told her he doesn't want her man (me), taking care of his baby. He will handle his own. It's what happens when the man you about to break up with, begs for some loving one last time, and the female doesn't pay attention, cause they are not "into it". Since most of the times I'm wowking on my photography, I usuallly use transit related stuff as subjects for the majority of my shots. It's a hobby that isn't dumb at all, so I wouldn't really care what people say about it, or me. When I'm traveling with my track team to the city for meets, I usually stand up standing half in and half out the door looking at the home signal. I watch it until it turns green, and then comes inside. Some people might say that I'm nervous or just plain retarded.. In the end, it just goes to show that that one person who knows the ways around the system might be helping you out one day. I have my life to live, and I could care less to what people say.
