fx20736 Posted February 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 19, 2009 It's been years since I rode the Newark City Subway. Do they still operate any PCC Cars or have they all been replaced by new light rail cars? For that matter are there any PCC Cars still operating in the Northeast US? MTR Admiralty Posted February 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted February 19, 2009 IIRC, there are no operating systems with PCC cars. All of them are either scrapped or sent elsewhere. If however, you want to see PCC cars on active tracks, try going to the West Coast to San Francisco. The F-Fisherman's Wharf and soon E-Embarcadero are both FULLY heritage street railways, offering PCC cars and cars from the turn-of-the-century (in other words, anything before the advent of the modern LRV)
metsfan Posted February 19, 2009 Share #4 Posted February 19, 2009 runs the only PCC streetcars, and they are PCC 2 cars. In bayonne at communipaw yard for HBLR they have the PCC cars, and there are plans to restore them. - A

I also rode one of the LRV's to Ocean Beach (don't remember the make/ model) as well as the BART to Berekely.

However, are the trolleys still in service or is a bus still substituting the entire service?
kaback9 Posted February 19, 2009 Share #7 Posted February 19, 2009 They got rid of them a while ago, the ones in Bayonne will be used for some special trolley at the waterfront eventually in Bayonne.

MTR Admiralty Posted February 19, 2009 Share #10 Posted February 19, 2009 You know, IMO, we should have some heritage line in New York City. But the question is: WHERE???

MTR Admiralty Posted February 19, 2009 Share #12 Posted February 19, 2009 It is Newark's so it belongs there unless they put the trolleys back on the tracks of UpTown trolley track that got covered up... Newark would most likely use the LRVs it has. However, in New York proper it would be great to have a heritage line, however it will be hard. MTR Admiralty Posted February 19, 2009 Share #14 Posted February 19, 2009 Humm, speaking of a Heritage line, I think they are building one in Red Hook... A Trolley line... They had one in 1989.
metsfan Posted February 19, 2009 Share #15 Posted February 19, 2009 There are PCC cars owned by a man that you can see along the east river. You could use them in NYC. - A

kaback9 Posted February 19, 2009 Share #18 Posted February 19, 2009 They were supposed to be scrapped but nothing ever came of that, I wish that NJT would bring back the PCC's for Newark as they could rebuild them into the PCC2 thing that SEPTA has, though I have heard those have had some problems. I think they should simply put them in service out in bayonne. B) - A
