do we they have to buy their own uniform? if so is a uniform allowance given? if so, how much? and if so, can you secretly spend it on anything you want like my dad did at HHC (health and hospitals corporation)?

Your complete uniform of shirts(long and short sleeved), pants, coat, jacket, hats, boots/ shoes, sweater are all given to you free. The boot/ shoes is a new thing, I haven't gotten any yet.

oh wow, even that winter hat that makes you look like you live in Alaska? sorry i dont know how to describe it

They have a summer uniform and a winter uniform which that hat you're talking about is part of.

And believe me, you don't want to either. They are as comfortable as sandpaper.

As far as the trooper hat goes, you might look like Floyd R. Turbo wearing it, but it is soooo warm when the temps hit the teens. :)

How many pants, shirts, hats, coats do they give you per year? Can you wear your own gear? If you don't wear the uniform, they will send you home?

Can you wear your own boots?

You cannot wear your own gear that is why they give you the uniforms they are mandatory. Your allotment is different for each uniform piece. I think its 3 years for pants and shirts and 5 years for the winter coat for example.

Right now you can wear your own boots but this will eventually change probably before you get the job. They just started giving boots to us in RTO last year.

On the LIRR, MNR, NJT, Amtrak and SIR you can wear your own gear. I don't understand why NYCTA doesn't let T/O's wear their own gear. Back in the day they used to let T/O's wear their own gear I wonder why they changed it.

Really? I have heard nothing but positive reviews from the fella's.

From what I've heard, there have been quite a few complaints about the shoes. I'm assuming that it's one of those hit-or-miss types.

I don't know why anyone would want these shoes anyway other than the fact that they are free (cheapskates). If you injure your foot or ankle, and you were issued these boots and decided not to wear them, don't be surprised if your comp claim is denied (since the TA will state that you were issued safety equipment and failed to wear it) and you'll have to fight the TA tooth and nail for your compensation differential.

Nothing is free. Period. I'll never get the boots unless given a direct order because the TA never gives you something without strings attached.

you may laugh at us but i laugh at all you T/Os that say you dont make enough to live in NYC. you're right but what do you think the rest of us make!? you're all making $60k without all that OT you guys keep complaining about and you get free transportation! the last time i checked the median salary in NYC was $43,000 meaning you guys make more than half of all New Yorkers (plus the free transportation). and personally i get good benefits with the post office but the rest of the world pays a lot more than the 1.5% that you all cry about, IF they have any insurance at all

My friend ,

First , I wasn't laughing at you personally , it was just funny to see 350k , and honestly , someone would have to be a real idiot to think a train operator earned almost a thousand dollars a day ...

Second , I'm 34 and have had this job 2 years ... I'm a lifelong New Yorker ... I've worked as a peace officer , a hotel worker , and I worked responding to bank alarms for 3 years before I got hired for this job and was making $20 an hour with no benefits and using my own personal vehicle , so I don't need a lecture on the cost of living in this city ... I've managed to sock away 25k beforeI became a T/O and that's on top of enjoying recreational gambling , it's called knowing how to manage money ...

I drive everywhere , even to work , in two years I never took a free ride on the TA unless I was working , although it's my right to do so whenever I want. My wife works and pays whatever the going fare is , she doesn't ride for free...

This is a tough job , especially for people that haven't picked a job yet or got a sh*tty picked job ... the schedule sucks for 1 , and the job requires working is filthy conditions , we need to be near perfect every stop we make , and put up with all kinds of b/s ... most jobs people can have a bad day or screw things up and can hide it or have it be overlooked , we can't ... I've had pneumonia twice in two years on this job without having it for over a decade prior , so I damn well deserve my medical benefits ... you try working in tunnels or driving a train with the window cracked open and sucking into your lungs all the crap we breathe and not having medical. I'm basically a right winger politically , I'm not a leftist or "ra-ra union guy" by any means , but in truth the union was right on to strike last time because the 1.5 was b/s , it was a way of taking away almost all of the 2% contribution we get to our pensions... so yeah , we can cry about it because we got f*cked , and it's like 1.7% now ... I pay about $28 bi weekly (optionally) for the best health coverage they offer for me and my wife , plus the 1.7% so I do and so do many other guys pay over $100 a month for medical , so I don't know where you and some other people get the idea we don't pay for medical , we do. You probably read the NY Post and that jackass columnist Nicole Gelinas who doesn't know what she's talking about and writes about how we have free healthcare and don't deserve 25/55 which is a pretty crappy pension and we're begrudged that ... maybe we should work for minimum wage , and see how the city would like it when every day guys got pissed off at a supervisor , or crew room , or a passenger , and pulled into a station and just decided to quit on the spot and get off the train and stranded everyone ...

Even though it's a pretty cool job , it's serious business , and we work hard and I don't like having my profession being treated like it's a joke undeserving of good pay and benefits , we have a lot of lives in our hands everyday , the riders , trackworkers , and we deserve what we get , Unapologetically ...

So please , with all due respect , know what you're talking about before you mouth off ...

Peace , buddy.

Well said. You're %100 correct. I paid over $1200 for my medical last year and it is horrible coverage that all of the lower paid titles pay alot less for. According to most doctors I have talked to GHI is the worst insurance company that is why so many docs are dropping them over the last 2 years.

The simple fact is we are underpaid and have the worst benefits out of all of the MTA agencies!

Robert Ray and the disaster at Union Square - no one could identify the motorman who wrecked the train and then sat in Union Square Park drinking.

I have GHI through my union DC-37 and most places don't really cover it. Don't get most coverage and I have to pay fees still, since they don't cover what they do cover 100%

Ok, here is the lowdown on health insurance. First, I have many years in City government and left it to go into the hospital world in 1996. I returned to City government in 2007, so I speak with that experience under my belt.

I always had GHI when I previously worked for the City. I now have Empire HMO and pay a premium of $75 every two weeks. GHI expanded benefits would be a bit less, but most doctors do not participate in GHI. And that is the deal breaker.

In the food chain of health plans, HIP and GHI are at the bottom. Of course, your coverage always depends on the particular plan and what it pays out. Some City employees opt for HIP and GHI Basic because it costs them nothing. Their union coverage usually supplements that coverage.

Each person has to look at their particular circumstances and choose accordingly. GHI gives you somewhat greater flexibility than HIP, but you have to look at whether your primary care doctor or any specialist you use takes GHI.

Any other questions, just ask!

Yes this is the problem with GHI alot doctors who used to accept it are no longer taking GHI.

I recently needed a piece of medical equipment and went to 2 suppliers near the house and neither accepted GHI so I then called the next 8 closest places and none accepted GHI either. I had to call GHI and have them give me a number of a place to call. It was about 40 miles from my house.

The HIP plan that we are offered is horrible too. There are HIP plans that are better but we aren't offered those. I am not even going to comment on the disgusting dental coverage that we have!!!
