Re: (2) "Black" and (5)<5> "Green" cars ,except the R142 cars. The Green fleet cars were (2) line fleet and the Black fleet came from the (5) line in preparation for the arrival of the R142 cars. It was determined that the (2) line ran 24/7 service so the (5) fleet was transferred because it's cars were in better shape. The (5) also ran one R62A train at that time.

Yellow stickers meant Westchester Yard (6) fleet. Sometime back in that era there was major work being done on the Lenox Avenue corridor so there were (3) trains that went to 241st Street WPR and some of their cars laid up in 239th St or Unionport-180 St yards or other yards like 137th St on the (1) line so you might see yellow, blue or red stickers on an R62A train running as a (5) or (2).

The 5 was green and the 2 black from the mid 90s until 2001. The 2 fleet(black stripe) was R33MLs, while the 5 fleet was R26-R28-R29s, which had a green stripe. Sometime, (IIRC around 1994) the 2 and 5 swapped fleets, without a stripe change (so the 2 was green and the 5 black prior to this switchover).

Oddly enough in their last week or so of service, the last R26-28s were transferred back over to the 2.

What I was trying to say was that the black stripe under the car numbers represented the (5) fleet originally, and those cars were transferred to the (2) to provide more reliable service 24/7. I've been working the (5) line for over 25 years now and we hated to see those cars go to the (2). FYI the black stripe always meant 180 yd equipment although we frequently used those cars for 1 trip on the (2) at 241 St at the tail end of the pm rush. We would change the signs from Thru express to Seventh Ave Exp. We NEVER used (2) equipment on the (5) however. Even today, with both lines using R142 cars, we on the (5), hate using (2) line equipment.

I remember taking a R62 5 once, at Pelham Parkway (WPR) in like 2000. I remember it has blue stripes under the car numbers.

If it was back in those days that train made 1 trip in the am on the (5) and laid up in New Lots Yard. For the pm rush I would bring it out of the yard and operate it back to Dyre. It was the only time I had a train assigned to me personally. I liked that train as much as I liked my redbirds so the yard dispatcher at NLY made sure I got an R62A every day. Remember, blue stripe meant (3) line, NLY equipment.

That's nice!

Probably you were the T/O of that train I got on.

Um, hello: "Two WH R-62A from (6)<6> (1676-1710, 1716-1725, 1736-1770, 1776-1815, 1831-1855, 1866-1870) (5)<5> on for OPTO.''

The (6) line had a job that started at Brooklyn Bridge where the crew made a put-in from the spur track south of the station and operated to Parkchester. On their last trip they operated in service to Brooklyn Bridge and terminated on the express track. They then proceeded light to Bowling Green, looped the train and went back in service as a (5) to Dyre. IIRC there was another crew that did a put-in from the 59th St spur track and did a similar job. I don't remember whether they finished at Parkchester or Pelham but I don't think they finished up on the (5) line. I'll have to ask the T/O or C/R on that first mentioned job about the particulars of the 59th St job.

The (2) and (5) on R-62's doesn't seem right?!?

Yes they were on 62As for like a few yrs, just to get the 26 to 33ML out with the 142s. Man I hope when the R188 come out for the (7) i see that happen again on the (2)(5) and (6) =)!

@Trainmaster5 how long have u been T/o, u know a lot. about the WPR line =)!

Well, I never saw a R-62's on (2) and (5) before... So the bullets looks extremly huge, :)!

I guess that is what happened when I saw the R-62's on the post-redbirds (7) line, huge bullet, ;)!

Well, from what I know, I dont remember the R62A on the (2), last time I officially rode it, was in Spring 2004 at TSQ, now that was FUN! It was (1) train as a 62A, last stop was 3rd- avd 149th, guess it was lay up or sumin.

In 2007 I saw an R62 Original (2) at 149th st GC. as a (3) , guessing it was for 239th. Man I love the 62s on my line =)!

If the (6) had em, with RF window, i would totally head to it for city hall loop;)

as for the (5) , when i use to live in manhattan, i did rode once or twice, especially, when the (5) ran on the (2) to 42nd, (3) to 14 and (1) to loop, cant remember how the G/o was... I thought the 62as on the (5) were from the (1)

Been pounding the road for over 25 years on what we used to call the Lenox Division ( (2), (3) and (5)). I just decided one day that I liked the (5) so I stayed here.

wow great post...that's an interesting job...I take it the train laid up on the siding south of BB would just wrong rail back into the station, the switch would be set for the loop, and off it went? Interesting... Bet when whoever laid that train up on the spur did so, they'd have to make sure everyone was off their train and no one was trying to ride through the loop :)
