Re: "Black" and "Green" cars ,except the R142 cars. The Green fleet cars were line fleet and the Black fleet came from the line in preparation for the arrival of the R142 cars. It was determined that the line ran 24/7 service so the fleet was transferred because it's cars were in better shape. The also ran one R62A train at that time. Trainmaster5 Posted March 13, 2009 Share #5 Posted March 13, 2009 Yellow stickers meant Westchester Yard fleet. Sometime back in that era there was major work being done on the Lenox Avenue corridor so there were trains that went to 241st Street WPR and some of their cars laid up in 239th St or Unionport-180 St yards or other yards like 137th St on the line so you might see yellow, blue or red stickers on an R62A train running as a or . Art Vandelay Posted March 13, 2009 Share #6 Posted March 13, 2009 The 5 was green and the 2 black from the mid 90s until 2001. The 2 fleet(black stripe) was R33MLs, while the 5 fleet was R26-R28-R29s, which had a green stripe. Sometime, (IIRC around 1994) the 2 and 5 swapped fleets, without a stripe change (so the 2 was green and the 5 black prior to this switchover). Oddly enough in their last week or so of service, the last R26-28s were transferred back over to the 2.

What I was trying to say was that the black stripe under the car numbers represented the fleet originally, and those cars were transferred to the to provide more reliable service 24/7. I've been working the line for over 25 years now and we hated to see those cars go to the . FYI the black stripe always meant 180 yd equipment although we frequently used those cars for 1 trip on the at 241 St at the tail end of the pm rush. We would change the signs from Thru express to Seventh Ave Exp. We NEVER used equipment on the however. Even today, with both lines using R142 cars, we on the , hate using line equipment. If it was back in those days that train made 1 trip in the am on the and laid up in New Lots Yard. For the pm rush I would bring it out of the yard and operate it back to Dyre. It was the only time I had a train assigned to me personally. I liked that train as much as I liked my redbirds so the yard dispatcher at NLY made sure I got an R62A every day. Remember, blue stripe meant line, NLY equipment.

It was train as a 62A, last stop was 3rd- avd 149th, guess it was lay up or sumin. In 2007 I saw an R62 Original at 149th st GC. as a , guessing it was for 239th. Man I love the 62s on my line =)! Interesting... Bet when whoever laid that train up on the spur did so, they'd have to make sure everyone was off their train and no one was trying to ride through the loop
