Gov. Paterson to MTA: Go ahead with Doomsday budget

ALBANY - Gov. Paterson says the MTA should go ahead with its so-called doomsday budget because the Legislature can't agree on a deal to save straphangers.

Paterson, in a Monday morning news conference, said Wednesday's deadline has been "known by all parties" and that the MTA should not delay adopting its budget.

"Delaying action, to me, would just ring too true to what's gone on in Albany too many times," Paterson said.

The MTA's finance committee is meeting Monday to approve the massive fare hikes and service cuts needed to plug a $1.2 billion budget gap.

Paterson held out hope that any fare hike or service cuts could be averted if lawmakers agree on a bailout deal sometime after the MTA's full board meets Wednesday.

Paterson, Mayor Bloomberg and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) support a bailout plan created by former MTA Chairman Richard Ravitch that calls for 8% fare hikes, tolls on the East and Harlem River bridges and a payroll tax on businesses in the MTA's 12-county region.

The Democrat-controlled state Senate has balked at the plan, with several Democratic lawmakers opposing tolls on the East and Harlem River bridges. Democrats hold 32 of the Senate's 62 seats. Republicans have also withheld their support from Ravitch's plan.

Paterson said he would not consider it his failure if an agreement was not reached to save straphangers.

"You have to have a consensus," Paterson said. "This is the way our democracy works and we respect that they have differing opinions."

Mark i respect you and I agree Paterson does not deserve much blame on this. The only fault in this is that he did not 'work more with the State Seanate and Assembly' on some sort of compromise than his yelling.

I actually put blame at both politically parties parties and the greedy MTA. On the GOP side especially going back from former Gov Pataki and Mayor Rudy for reducing state funding that caused the MTA to 'borrow' to pay for expansion projects. Also the Democratics are at fault esepcially Sheldon Silver who killed 'congestion pricing' couple of years back that would have prevented these almost certain cuts to occur. More recently the clueless GOP and Democratic leaders in the Assembly and Senate especially Malcolm Smith. Finally the MTA on useless projects such as not selling valuable real estate like the former NYCT headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn.

It's time to clean house in Albany.:tdown:

Until all shades of Tammy Halll(it still alive & well in Albany)is gone, this will be the same song. And when i get my teaching license i may leave the NY metro area for this huge reason.

The MTA is definitely to blame for this and now we're going to have to pay for it, funny how that works. Dale Hemmerdinger got the Q45 extended to help out his son's business at Atlas Park Mall in Glendale (which it actually didn't and his son lost the mall and the land it's on to the bank last month) yet there's never anyone on it past it's old terminal at 80th Street and Eliot Ave. That's just one example of unnecessary service and they want to cut service that alot of people actually rely on.

i don't Understand...im not a dummy but if we have 20, 10, 35, 40, 43 year old cars...why is there a debt? if thats the case then maintainence should cost just as much as buying new cars. its basically 75 percent the same subway for like 70 years! where is the debt come in to play if its the same things being used? AM I MISSING SOMETHING?

It's the capital budget that's throwing things off, the operating budge has been good but now the capital budget is in the red. that's the things that are used for major projects such as orders for new cars, projects like the SAS, renovating projects for stations.

We should rally! Wear shirts that says governor Patterson what are you doing with a picture of a (W) and (Z)!

He's been a failure since day 1..

Again it aint his fault, its the (MTA) who loves to spend, the economy is in bad shape, how do you think Albany is gonna provide for the (MTA) if albany needs money for them selves, and censor the "A" word up there like this: a** or sumin

Yes Patterson is a joke.....but look at it this way......if you had a car and paid insurance....that would be like 400 dollars a month....then the cost of parking....or if you parked on the street and the meter ran out....Bloombergs boys would ticket you in a heart beat.....103 dollars a month is still a bargain as I see it.....

Remember, some people are making minimum wage, this will be a big hit for the lower class and it might hurt the middle class as well.
