Media Advisory: MTA Long Island Rail Road Celebrates 175th Anniversary With Commemorative U.S. Postal Stamp Cancel And Anniversary Ceremony

 

The Long Island Rail Road was chartered April 24, 1834. Two events open to the press will take place on Friday, April 24 marking the LIRR's 175th anniversary.

 

• April 24- 10:45 AM photo op with LIRR President Helena Williams and other LIRR officials at LIRR's Penn Station 34th Street Entrance Corridor where the United States Postal Service will be hand canceling letters with a specially designed postmark commemorating the LIRR's 175th anniversary. Following the photo op, the press is invited to travel by train to Jamaica. The U.S. Postal Service will be performing the special hand canceling at Penn Station from 8 AM to 1 PM. (*There is a $2.00 fee charged to purchase special, pre-stamped envelopes for hand cancel.)

 

• April 24- 1 PM in Jamaica an anniversary ceremony will be held. Elected officials, MTA Chairman H. Dale Hemmerdinger, MTA Executive Director and CEO Elliot Sander, LIRR President Helena Williams and several past LIRR presidents are schedule to attend. The ceremony will take place at the street-level Atrium of the AirTrain JFK Building at 144-21 94th Avenue, Jamaica, just south of the LIRR's Jamaica headquarters building. Media coverage is invited

 

Prior to the 1 PM ceremony, there will be a 12:45 PM photo op on the Jamaica Station platform with a special 175th LIRR Anniversary drumhead attached to the front of a train.

* Note: For customers that have their own pre-stamped envelope, there is no charge for the hand cancel. There is a $2.00 fee charged by the Long Island Sunrise Trail Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society for those wishing to purchase a special pre-stamped, vintage envelope for hand cancel. The funds collected by the Sunrise Trail Chapter of the NRHS, after expenses, will be donated to three museums: the New York Transit Museum, the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum and the Railroad Museum of Long Island.
