No card needed to enter the station. To ride the trains you'll need a ticket though.

Technically, you don't need a ticket to ride the train. However buying a ticket on a train costs more.

^Like LIRR. Sometimes from my expereince these guys dont check your tickets. So you get to keep them and use it later.

Whether you buy a ticket before boarding the train or on the train you still need one to ride the train. Failure to purchase a ticket could get you thrown off the train and placed in a police cruiser.
