Fred G Posted May 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 4, 2009 Saturday was opening day for the Essex Steam Train, and since the boat that's used for the River component is in drydock, the trip was extended north beyond it's normal terminus, up to Haddam and Goodspeed station/yard. I took advantage of the "G.O" and got some shots in areas the train isn't normally seen. along the Connecticut River in Haddam ALCO/Cooke 2-8-0 97 at Goodspeed Locomotive 97 was disabled so the train was pulled by GE 80 tonner 901. Number 901 is the oldest diesel locomotive still operating in revenue service in North America. Caboose Ralph Gibson crossing Route 82 in Haddam. switching ends at Goodspeed. After this I rode to Essex in the caboose, thanks to my buddy Lee. View of the CT River in Haddam View coming through the rock cut at Deep River landing In the yard at Essex, Alco/Brooks 2-8-2 40 being towed. Here are some shots from the first run on Sunday. Same routing to Haddam, but this time with Alco/Brooks 2-8-2 Number 40 pulling. This really should be a video clip, just to add the sound of the whistle. This guy who owns the Edsel, is a railfan and a volunteer for the railroad plus I'm told he also has more Edsels! Grade crossing at Route 82, this time with steam. Conductor throwing the switch at Goodspeed. switching ends Pulling out of Goodspeed. I think they used the more theatrical coal today. Parting shot, with Edsel. metsfan Posted May 5, 2009 Share #7 Posted May 5, 2009 Beautiful!:tup::eek: You folks should check out new hope & ivyland. They have diesel and steam as well. Interestingly enough, some steam locos were converted to burn oil or diesel to make the steam. The last remaining Big Boy is heating oil fired i believe. Also of note with steam locos, is that they experimented with coal gravel, smaller chunks and smaller corn flake sized pieces. Made it burn more efficiently. - A
