MotormanMike Posted May 17, 2009 Share #26 Posted May 17, 2009 Here's 20 I can think off that I like in no particular order : Metropolitan Ave Myrtle - Wycoff Myrtle Ave - Ditmars Blvd - 59st - Columbus Circle - ( Brighton Beach - ( Kings Highway - ( 49th st (B'way) - Union Turnpike - 52nd street - 207th street - Lefferts Blvd - Rockaway Park - Howard Beach / JFK - Far Rockaway - Mott Ave - Smith / 9th streets - 168th street - 34th street (6th ave) - Broadway Junction - Stillwell Ave - I have two questions to ask out of my own curiosity - A) Is there anyone here who has been to EVERY stop (not even missed 1) in the city (counting or not counting Staten Island) - specifically Bklyn/Qns/Man/Bx? B) How does one decide where to go on a railfan trip? Thanks
MTR Admiralty Posted May 17, 2009 Share #27 Posted May 17, 2009 I have two questions to ask out of my own curiosity - A) Is there anyone here who has been to EVERY stop (not even missed 1) in the city (counting or not counting Staten Island) - specifically Bklyn/Qns/Man/Bx? How does one decide where to go on a railfan trip? Thanks  I've been to every single station in the entire system that is open to revenue service. Well for me, I pick the lines where people rarely go on that have the best photo-ops.
MotormanMike Posted May 18, 2009 Share #28 Posted May 18, 2009 Yeah , revenue service is what I meant ... that's cool. I've been a subway rider 32 years , and a motorman for 2 ... I'm in the B division ... I've operated all B division lines except for the Prospect Park and the ... In my lifetime I've been to every station in revenue service except : North of 207th street and South of 59th - Columbus Circle (2)/(5) North of E.180th street 145th and 148th street in the North and Nostrand Ave - New Lots in the South. Mosholu and Woodlawn in the North and Utica Ave in the South. North of East 149th Grand street east to Canarsie. Times Square Shuttle(but have been on other lines at the terminals) Prospect Park Shuttle (but have been on other lines at the terminals) Also once rode as a kid back in the early 80's , once , the SI Railway from I believe Grasmere to Tompkinsville. Maybe longer but not sure. Only rode it once.

MTR Admiralty Posted May 20, 2009 Share #34 Posted May 20, 2009 Too bad the Lower Level of that station is going away soon. You can hear those chopping guns going full blast during the AM rush. It's going away now. Crews are blasting through the lower level already. What use was that lower level for anyway? None. It was only built because the IND wanted to stop the IRT from extending the Worlds fair line. Ironically, its happening anyway. It was used for the Aqueduct trains, other than that, there was really no use. It really was an impediment to future development on the Flushing line. Aqueduct Posted May 20, 2009 Share #35 Posted May 20, 2009 I liked that Lower Level, it was the oddball of the system. I saw recent pictures of the carnage: From nycsubway.org: In addition to the platforms described above, there is an abandoned lower platform on the southbound side (one track, underneath the downtown local track on the upper level, and one side platform underneath the island platform above). The lower level platform was built along with the rest of the station in 1932, but it was only used from 1959 to 1981 for odd services like the Aqueduct Racetrack special fare trains, and for rush hour E trains for a period during the 1970s. For many years, a crossunder was open between the upper level platforms using a passageway at the northern end of the lower level. Rearrangement of the mezzanine a few years ago allowed passengers to crossover using the mezzanine within the fare control. It isn't really clear why this lower level was even built. It can only be used by trains running from Queens via 53rd Street (today's E service). Heading downtown on the track from the lower level of 50th Street, switches allow access to the downtown local, downtown express, or lower level of 42nd St. Departing 42nd Street on the lower level, trains can become local or express prior to entering 34th Street; however, trains departing 42nd Street on the upper level cannot cross over until reaching Canal Street. It is likely, therefore, that the extra platform was built to allow some operational flexibility, by permitting trains from 53rd Street to have access to both downtown local and express. Perhaps there was no other suitable location for a crossover switch, or it was thought an extra platform face could allow increased dwell time or time for switches to line up. INDman Posted May 20, 2009 Share #36 Posted May 20, 2009 What use was that lower level for anyway? None. It was only built because the IND wanted to stop the IRT from extending the Worlds fair line. Ironically, its happening anyway. If it was not for city take over of the subways in the 1940's it would still serve this purpose.

LRG Posted August 7, 2009 Share #38 Posted August 7, 2009 My favorite stations are both Lorimer Street and Bedford Avenue on the . I used to get on or off at either one of these stations during my high school tenure. Bedford Avenue became a regular to get on and off since two girls I were smitten over at the time walked in the same direction itwas located at. (I know, stalker status...lol.) MAA89 Posted August 8, 2009 Share #40 Posted August 8, 2009 My favorites: Howard Beach-JFK : Ultra-modern, polished steel appearance, extremely clean, has restrooms, the AirTrain platform and cars is nice to see from distance, very scenic route on both northbound and southbound sides. 14th St : Mainly for the "Life Underground" exhibits, but also generally clean and not very crowded. 81st St-Museum of Natural History (: Easy access to the Museum from station, nice murals on the walls. 8th St-NYU and Christopher St : Nice murals on the walls. South Ferry : Excellent job with the renovation. Platform and walls look great. Nice terminal. Roosevelt Island : Great silver-grey tiles on European-style "tube station" walls. Cleanest elevator in the system. Plenty of escalators, which is necessary because of the great depth of the station (over 100 feet underground). Transfer available to the only commuter aerial tramway in North America. Broadway Junction : One of the cleaner stations on the Fulton St line. Love the ride up the escalator and the mezzanine leading to the , as well as the "barn" through which one transfers to the Manhattan-bound track. Broad Channel and Aqueduct-North Conduit and Aqueduct Racetrack : The first two are in very scenic locations, with leaves and shrubbery jutting over the platform windscreens/railings. The Racetrack is a neat single-platform stop, and the low ridership means the station is largely clean and free from vandalism. North-Conduit's long platform is also an interesting oddity to ponder. Grand Central and Times Square : Both stations on the shortest line on the system. The only places you know you are guaranteed to find one (if not more) trains waiting for you when you get to the platform. 42nd Street-PABT : Actually like the entire station complex, especially the entrance on Times Square and the artwork in the walls on the connection from the numbered lines to the B division lines, but the PABT station on the 8th Avenue line is the one I use most often. The great thing is being able to exit on any street between 40th and 44th, making it easy to get where I want. The exit into PABT is fun and good for those taking a bus out of town. St George's Ferry Terminal on the SIR: Access to the SI Ferry, almost every bus on the island, a parking lot, and taxis. I once had to go to the Italian Consulate and got off at the 68th St-Hunter College stop on the . Someone was playing the most beautiful music I had heard on the subway. It was kind of an Andean folk music style, and very refined. I could not locate the person or persons playing, and I haven't been to that station since, so I do not know if he/they are still there. That is one reason I would list 68th-Hunter on this thread. Beach 67th St-Gaston : My home station. Great view of the Atlantic Ocean behind the Far Rockaway-bound platform. I though I was the only one who liked the Aqueduct station, the North Conduit platform is that length for the purposes of the end of the platform to exit to the racetrack. The racetrack isn't bad either.
MAA89 Posted August 9, 2009 Share #42 Posted August 9, 2009 I though I was the only one who liked the Aqueduct station, the North Conduit platform is that length for the purposes of the end of the platform to exit to the racetrack. The racetrack isn't bad either. The southbound platform is nicer than the one close to the Racetrack on the northbound side. The closed off section on the northbound-side looks really dirty and old (the walls are crumbling). I hate Aqueduct in the morning (when I am going to Manhattan) but think its quite nice when the stops on the southbound platform when I am returning home. R62A 1991 Posted August 18, 2009 Share #49 Posted August 18, 2009 My favorite stations would include the Contract 1 IRT stations, and Liberty, Van Siclen, Shepherd, and Euclid Avs on the Fulton St IND. I really like the mosaics on the Contract 1 IRT stations, especially the ones on Bleecker St & Spring St on the southbound platforms. The Fulton ones give a completely different feel for me from any other stations in the system, and I like the blue on beige (I think that's the color of the general tiles).
