Medical hold...for something i don't even have!

Here's the deal: I've had to undergo the medical exam for a conductor's job...twice already. The first time did'nt go well because my blood pressure was a bit high and the doctor was SOOOOOOO concerned i have sleep apnea...which i do not. At that time i had no medical insurance so i had to get insurance to do anything. I got coverage, took care of my blood pressure and even dropped a couple pounds but when i had everything in order to go back my name was taken off the list. I got it restored and went for a 2ND medical. My BP was great but this time it was something with the EKG...abnormality or something, so i talked with the doctor (a different one than before) and she told me to go to my doc and go over the EKG chart...and a sleep apnea test. SLEEP APNEA? JESUS F---IN' CHRIST I DON'T HAVE IT, WHY DO Y'ALL INSIST THAT I DO, I WANT TO GET TO WORK ALREADY...i actually screamed that out. Now i went to my own doc AND a specialist and done an EKG at both...NORMAL. Now the sleep apnea, the specialist set up a sleep study but my insurance (healthfirst) would'nt cover it. I went back to 180 livingston to explain to them the situation and to see if they could help me. 1...i was told i was off the list AGAIN! 2...being that i'm not an employee yet, they don't have to send me where they send employees to have a sleep study if they need it. I'm at my wit's end and don't know what to do. Can anyone give me any advice?(A)(NYCT)

Looks like your going to have to show them you don't have Sleep apnea. They do keep record so the DR read the other DR's report and thats why she talked about it. They will not let you in a safety sensitive postion until they know for sure you don't have it since the first DR is concerned about it and was not taken care of when you seen the second DR. So basicly you going to need notes from your DR and give it to the TA DR if your given another chance. Also you need to be humble with them because they (Medical Department) can give you a hard time trying to get the job and your whole career if you do get the job. They will not beileve anything you have to say only written proof.

University medical staff. NYU, Rutgers, Princeton, SUNY, Columbia. Heck, take the :septa: train to philly & hit up drexel or temple. Fight for your right to have correct diagnosis and treatment by (MTA).

This is typical TA. They do this to employees all the time. They keep people out of work for B.S. things that your doctor usually disagrees with. I have personally won 2 medical arbitration cases in the last 6 years and have an appeal in process right now, which I am guaranteed to win.

Well at this point in time, i need a sworn affidavit from god stating i don't have sleep apnea...which i don't. Other than that i have to search for a sleep study that healthfirst will cover. But for now, i gotta crack my arco book open and practice a couple TO exams for the real deal next month. From the looks of these questions, i...am...SCREWED!(A)(NYCT)

The T/O should be the same as the Open Competitive C/R exam which is basic reading comprehension and basic math questions, how are you screwed?

The medical doctors down there are a bunch of quacks ... when I got my medical to get hired I passed it the first time with no holds ... I had this female doctor go over everything with me and she was asking me crap like if I get road rage , do I get angry when I drive ... stuff that had nothing to do with the medical ... somehow during the medical I mentioned that I had previosly played ice hockey for about 10 years , including when I was in high school , and I swear to God she actually asked me "Oh Really? What Team?" .... ;) ... Lady , I played for the NY Rangers , I gave up the multi million dollar contract to operate trains ... LOL ;)

LOL i think that was the same doctor that put me on hold the first time. Asking me about road rage, asking if i'd been exposed to gunfire, artillery fire, or explosives. She looked at the knucks on my right hand and noticed the scars on them...at the time i was a security guard in a hospital in BK...so she asked if i fought often. I told her, in my hospital, in the neighborhood it's in, brawls were inevitable. She marked it down as "anger issues", Jeez!(A)(NYCT)

I now what you are going through.I went or the medical for T/O back in Late JAN.They found something wrong with my EKG,I went to my own doctor, everything was fine.I go back thereand the dotor sends me to a TA Neurologist and a Psychiatrist. My own doctor did an EKG,everything was fine.

I have Cerebal Palsy.while my balance is not perfect,I can walk, run, drive.etc with no problem. She insists that I had a stroke that I didnt tell her about. In that small office,I stumbled a bit walking one foot in front of the other, and she said "You are going to be working on the Tracks in tunnels near a third rail"I told her in a sarcastic voice "Really?"

Anyway,I went to the Psychiatrist and did great there. with no problems (i had to go to Beth israel)I went to the neurologist and he reomended that I get a Crainal MRI along with a Ear Nose and Throat test to test for Vertigo.

My MRI was normal,as well as the ENT test.(Believe me,you dont want that,it makes you dizzy and nauseous)

I dont have medical insurance,so I spent over $2,000 of my own money on the tests.

I had to be reinstated again in late March

I am waiting to be called again very soon.IF they ont let me in this time,I am going to make a big stink about it.This whole process SUCKS!!!!

Her last name begins with a D.Her first name begins with an H.

Andrew if you have all of the documentation that clearly states that as usual the TA "doctors" were wrong in not allowing you to get the job then you can fight for your seniority back if/ when you get hired.

How do they test your blood pressure with a machine or the old school way. I know the medical for the nypd the use a machine because its actual Officers assigned to the medical dept that take your ekg check your eyes and blood pressure. The doctor See s about 35 people at 1 time and ask you to stand on one foot and bend over. Is it like that with the TA

The TA has 3 MAC (medical assesment centers) with quack doctors that check you using old outdated equipment. The EKG machine they use according to my doctor is an inaccurate antique.

Best bet for people going through the hiring process is to have a lawyer who specializes in civil service employment issues. I don't have any health issues at this time, but due to my age(39 now)..possibly 41,42 when they reach my list # for B/O...they might try to make something up that would make me fail the medical.

Thanks for the heads up on the TA's quacks.

Labor lawyers are very expensive.

another heads up on dealing with (MTA) quack docs, Zip treatment to the family questions..

"Are you parents healthy?"

"Do any family members have ____ conditions?"

"Is there any ___ history in your family?"

Remember, YOUR applying for the position, not your mother, brother, ect..

Any health questions about family, My standard answer is "Everyone is healthy, no history Blah blah.. Looking forward to reaching 'The Hundred Club' just like Grammy & Uncle (Insert favorite uncle's name here)!"

Question about YOUR health, you must be careful in choosing your words.

Don't expound on things. Keep it simple.

I wouldn't say lie, especially about the serious stuff, but small embellishments won't hurt.. Leave out "The Lost Weekend" or similar events.. No to any illegal substances, and just a few time a year on the alcohol, at weddings/events, even if you are aka 'The Keg Master'...

As for exercise questions, Sure you do!

You ride your bike every week with a family member, or walk your dog every day..

Sometimes you even go collecting soda cans around the park..

Nothing strenuous, but not sitting in front of that computer every day, right?

If your BP may be an issue, cut out any salt, cut back the fluid intake & Google-up 'natural diuretics' to help get that pressure down..

B) Hope this helps..

One thing ... about alcohol ... you NEVER drink , not even once a year on Christmas ... You do not tell them about anything they don't know and can't find out via a written record ... and while you should never lie because lying is wrong and honesty is always the best policy B) whatever you honestly "forget" is just that , it's not a lie , it's something you "forgot" ;)

This is very very true if you say you only have ONE drink a year on new years they say that's a pattern and you're an alcoholic. Into the program you go.
