Question regarding the R160A vs the R160B

Recommended Posts

I believe at this point, the R160s with Alstom propulsion are fairing better than the ones with siemens. the reason is that the regenerative brake on the Siemens trains cut out completely at 4 mph, while the alstoms don't cut out till 1 mph. that results in higher brake wear on the siemens cars, which is characterized by the annoyingly loud squealing noise made when the cars stop. this noise is noticably louder on the siemens cars than the alstom cars.

to me, there is no real difference when riding the A or B other than that the A's door motors sound awsome, like from a spaceship in star trek or something...

Well, asking what is better won't have one answer because its subjective.

If the question were what do you like better, I'd say the R160B. I love the sound of the Siemens propulsion, and the speedometer is visible on though the crack of the T/O door. I also love the sound when the R160B's doors close. Its silent at first, and then you hear that wonderful *pow* noise.

I really dislike the braking on the R160B as it makes that squeaking noise like the R46s. I can understand if a train brakes downhill like at Union Turnpike, but the R160Bs brake like that on almost every stop along Broadway.

I agree with you 100%.

Those R160B's will most likely go to Jamaica Yard. I don't think Coney Island is getting new cars for a while.

I have to admit, the R160Bs sound really cool and accelerate much faster than the R160As (esp. Siemens sets). This makes them extremely appealing to railfans that love to video them running. However in terms of comfort and quietness, the R160As are definitely the way to go!

9803-9942: R160B

9943-9974: R160A-1

They're all going to Jamaica Yard on the (E)(F) lines. They might be seen on the (R) but only as often as the R32/R42 on that line are seen.

There is no R160 Option III. Those 140 cars of Option II will be the last R160s Kawasaki will make.

I'm sorry, but aside from who made them and the propulsion package, what is the difference between an R160A and an R160B? I mean, I don't see any difference in appearance and its almost like saying an R17 with GE equipment is different from one with Westinghouse.

seeing (MTA) had purchase #8313 - #9974 1,662 R160 cars.

( i think that need to purchase 37 or 38 cars of R160's.

( so it would make it even that (MTA) had completed finish purchase 1,700 cars R160. there plan was to purchase 1,700 cars.the last 37 cars

R160 will be what #30** series? so it will be even that 1,700 cars

have been purchase.

Besides different propulsion

1) R160B doors are silent, R160A doors making a whirring sound when closing

2) R160B doors making a *pow* sound when closing, R160A doors do not

3) The R160B's speedometer is visible though the crack of a T/O door, in a R160A its not

4) I never noticed it, but some say the R160A is smoother than the R160B

5) I never noticed it, but some say the R160A is quieter than the R160B
