6 Lexington Ave Posted June 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 10, 2009 I was wondering which is better the R160A or the R160B? And, which motors are better Siemens or Alstom?
Fan Railer Posted June 10, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 10, 2009 I believe at this point, the R160s with Alstom propulsion are fairing better than the ones with siemens. the reason is that the regenerative brake on the Siemens trains cut out completely at 4 mph, while the alstoms don't cut out till 1 mph. that results in higher brake wear on the siemens cars, which is characterized by the annoyingly loud squealing noise made when the cars stop. this noise is noticably louder on the siemens cars than the alstom cars. to me, there is no real difference when riding the A or B other than that the A's door motors sound awsome, like from a spaceship in star trek or something... R44 5278 Posted June 10, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 10, 2009 The R160A is definitely better b/c they are extremely quiet and brake extremely smoothly. The only thing that is plaguing their reputation however is their numerous frozen FIND systems.
Maserati7200 Posted June 11, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 11, 2009 Well, asking what is better won't have one answer because its subjective. If the question were what do you like better, I'd say the R160B. I love the sound of the Siemens propulsion, and the speedometer is visible on though the crack of the T/O door. I also love the sound when the R160B's doors close. Its silent at first, and then you hear that wonderful *pow* noise.
R44 5278 Posted June 11, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 11, 2009 I really dislike the braking on the R160B as it makes that squeaking noise like the R46s. I can understand if a train brakes downhill like at Union Turnpike, but the R160Bs brake like that on almost every stop along Broadway.

trainspot12 Posted June 11, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 11, 2009 I love the R160 Siemens than the Alstoms R160A/B. They are cooler to be on and the brakes are great (although I love those squeaky brakes).

MattTrain Posted June 11, 2009 Share #11 Posted June 11, 2009 Both R160A and R160B aren't that different to me, honestly (despite being built by different manufacturers). I like them both equally. The Siemens propulsion on some R160B cars (8843-9102) are really neat.
R44 5278 Posted June 11, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 11, 2009 I have to admit, the R160Bs sound really cool and accelerate much faster than the R160As (esp. Siemens sets). This makes them extremely appealing to railfans that love to video them running. However in terms of comfort and quietness, the R160As are definitely the way to go! INDman Posted June 15, 2009 Share #20 Posted June 15, 2009 I'm sorry, but aside from who made them and the propulsion package, what is the difference between an R160A and an R160B? I mean, I don't see any difference in appearance and its almost like saying an R17 with GE equipment is different from one with Westinghouse. R32 3348 Posted June 15, 2009 Share #24 Posted June 15, 2009 Both cars ride the same. They are basically the same car, it's just a few extremely minor differences which are not noticable to the average rider (ex - doors).
