Apologies if I’ve missed this somewhere along the line, but I’m just wondering how many R179 sets are in revenue service as of right now?

I flew back home to London for Christmas yesterday and a work colleague had texted me that he’d seen the R179 heading into Manhattan yesterday, and I worked out that if I went to JFK via the to Sutphin and the Airtrain the timing would be about right for me to get it. Sure enough, as I entered the platform at Canal, in it came. It’s pretty similar to a 160 to be fair, but it’s still a nice new train and it was good to ride on it for my last Subway ride of 2017.

Sounds the same to me but that’s not to say it hasn’t changed...

Had a funny one on the downtown (R62A) on my way in to work this morning. The door chimes were broken throughout the whole train for whatever reason, so the C/R stepped in and made the noises himself over the announcement system! I asked him about it when I got off, and he said that he was doing it to avoid having to take the train out of service during rush hour! I’m terrible at remembering car numbers, and have no idea if it did get taken out after the rush, but I thought it was pretty funny.

Awww, you almost feel sorry for it seeing it sitting in the yard among its ancestors.

Had a quick nose round the mock up yesterday and I’m pretty impressed. I particularly like the full colour LCD destination signs, and the way they’re based on the rollsigns of the older stock like the R68.

Had an interesting experience on an R160 yesterday.
I was on an uptown where the FIND knew what station we were at but thought we were going towards Brooklyn! So for example, at Herald Square it said ‘This is a Brooklyn bound train, the next stop is 14 St, Union Square’ when of course the train was bound for 96/2 and the next stop was Times Square. Odd, and something that I’ve never seen before.
Also, the refurbed R62A’s on the 42 St are incredibly bright inside. I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed that or whether it’s just me.

Is it me or is the font of the front LED bullet sign of the R179 slightly different to that of the 160? Or is it bigger? Either way, something’s different and I can’t put my finger on what it is.

Shame I couldn’t get out to ride it yesterday, all I can really say for now is it certainly won’t be that clean for long!

Took the today for the first time in a little while, and it made me wonder: when was the last time anything other than an R160 ran on it, and what type of train was it?

Something I thought of today: Where does the numbering of subway cars come from? R32, 42, 46, 62, 68 etc
Is there a pattern to it, if so what, or is it random?
And who comes up with it? The car builders or the ?

I can’t provide a link right now as I’m on my phone, but a few hours ago, a couple of videos were posted onto Youtube of some trains running via the to Bay Ridge! Certainly not the most common diversion, almost reminiscent of the !

Interesting one on the tonight, apparently there was a shopping trolley on the tracks at Utica earlier!
Bearing in mind Utica is an underground station, and they had to get it through the turnstiles, how did it find its way onto the track?!

Is it just me or has the Broadway 7th Ave line been really unreliable recently? It has delays again now...

Does anyone have a full list of route programs for the R160? I'd be interested to see.
