Anyone who went to the open house yesterday think we'll get called for next Saturday? Lady said she's recommending me to move on and with the time line it looks like quite the time crunch for an agency that usually moves at a snails pace... Looking forward to hearing others' experiences... Hopefully the call comes quickly.

I know for a fact 80 people are supposed to be in the next SnD overview so perhaps, if not you're in line for the next one it's  slow and steady pace with the LIRR

Yo… I’m gonna say it again. I know what’s going on in the railroad. You don’t need to help me decide what I should do for a living or career. Mind your own business and focus on yourself getting in instead. Let me pick a job I want, a choice that will make me happy.

    I don’t wanna operate a train.

Dude why in the world are you so hostile, you have actual LIRR Engine service employees giving you great practical advice and wisdom, simply informing you of things. Learn how to take constructive criticism, and someone just correcting you so you don't make the same mistake again. That attitude's not going to get you far especially on the LIRR I'd be damned if you were ever my Brakeman dude.

We live in all parts of the tri-state area. There’s one trainee now that’s from NJ. I’ve seen people drop out of the program since they live too far and can’t keep up with the work due to long hours and commuting. But it’s doable.

It's really how bad do you want man, there was someone in my phase one class coming from Yonkers by transit had to be at KO for 6AM, took 3 hours. If people want it they'll make it happen

Greetings all. Went to the open house on 3/8. I was told I would be called for the overview in 2 weeks. I called Ms Drew last week and was told “they’ve had so many events, and a lot of paperwork to get through”  Should I be worried? I’ve been studying the signals and definitions like crazy (family member is an engineer)

Nothing to be worried about wait and be patient, I have friends that went to the same open house that haven't heard anything either. I waited almost 2 months to hear back, keep studying and Utilizing the tools your have right now, utilize that advantage get ahead and stay ahead.

Just coming back to this to see if anybody failed/if they're bumping you up to April. Just curious!

I got an email from the background check company on Tuesday evening to tell me that my background check has been completed, but so far I haven't been called by the LIRR since my initial phone call on the 14th

Hey Man, nah they haven't contacted me she said if they did it would be by the end of this week. So I guess I'm in August I've sent in info to the background checking company all week. It's all good tho, just a little bummed out to miss out on that seniority LOL. I'm going to need updates from you on progress in Phase 2 man gotta know what I'm in store for.

Hey everyone and congrats on the progress. I wanna know if I should have emailed HR back after my interview. I know I scored probably the highest on my S&D test back in January. Still haven't heard anything wondering if I should give them a call. I would have been done with Phase 1 by now.  Anyone go to interview after Jan 4 S&D test and not get called back

What's Up Man, Good to hear from you again. How would you know you scored the highest though? You were saying this a while back in January. I would reach back out to HR tho because you def should have gotten word by now. I know our Phase 1 class was the biggest they've ever had in history we had 34 people in there. One of my boys while he's not an engineer he's a conductor after he had his panel interview after SnD he didn't hear back for months and out of nowhere they called him to start. I would just write some emails and call back keep calling what does it hurt. Just so you'd atleast know. Unless you completely bombed the interview, wish you the best man

    Hello,

I have the S&D test in 5 weeks. I'm looking for various ways to help with studying while having a full-time job. I just recently gave up all electrical distractions besides the necessities. And I'm also curious about the background check, If you list exactly everything then they won't have to randomly call out whatever they've dug up.

I simply wrote the definitions hundreds of times ran through dozens of notebooks, I'd spend hours writing everyday. Then once you actually learn then you can utilize the flash cards to test yourself or simply to have the words on hand in a more convenient way, take 5-8 cards with you to work, on the train, doctors office whatever, I'd take 4 cards to the gym on the stair master go over them over and over again. But writing them over and over again helps a lot when it comes to the test it's almost muscle memory, you'll know if there's a an extra "s" or parentheses, every little thing counts. Also don't think for ANY of the definitions oh yeah I'll just talk the L on this word it's too long. IT WILL COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU !!!!! I skipped over Roadway Worker and another long Definition those were the first 2 on the test. Everything counts, really not trying to discourage anybody, but this is probably the easiest part of the process, it may seem like a lot but it is indeed the easiest part. While going through phase 1 I wish I could have just went back to studying signals and definitions. I'd give anything to study 10 definitions a day LOL. However like everyone else has said if you put in the work and put in those hours every day you will be more than fine. Good Luck!

Hey there. I recently graduated from train operator program for mta subways and just received an invite for locomotive engineer recruitment event. I live in farmingdale and  am thinking of going for it. I've been told that lirr engineer training is a lot harder than subways but I'm sure that the hard work and determination will pay off. Any advice?

I would say go for it, I recently got through phase one and in all it was a 8 month long process from the Open House until then, it's  not something that will happen in a couple weeks. 7 Months in and I won't actually be employed until August, So Almost a year practically from the open house, Not trying to scare you in anyway I encourage you to do things that are hard and will benefit your future. I have a Biology Degree and phase one was harder than any semester I've had in school, especially because I had to juggle it with school. Idk how your work schedule will work around it but we had two people from Mass Transit in our class. Two Train Engineers one of them told me it gave them no advantage in the class because a lot of the stuff didn't translate. I don't know the exact reasons but both of them dropped out from the Phase 1 class.

It's not something you can half ass because you're just going to waste a shit load of your time, money, sick days, vacations etc. Again not trying to scare you or discourage you in any way, I hated when people just told me the worst parts of the program, there's days where you study for hours on end Im not talking 3-4 hrs more like 8-12 , it's going to be a test to your discipline, study habits, learning techniques, mental endurance and more.BUT it is worth it, I'm not even half way through the program to be a qualified engineer... lol

There's countless posts in here from qualified engineers and people that can give you a more informed scope of the job and other perspectives. I'm just speaking from what I've gone through so far in the most recent phase 1 class

I can't imagine going through all these classes and testing to fail the background or medical. I just had my medical yesterday, everything went well. Background check is currently in progress. I got an email from them yesterday to provide proof of two jobs I worked at in 2014. I know I don't have any criminal history or anything shady that would cause me to fail the background check, but I'm just going to be on edge until this clears and they finally give me me the OK to quit my job. This is such a long, drawn out process, but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Yeah man I can't imagine having this opportunity fall through because of that either. It's wild they go back 10 years, HR was telling me place jobs that I only worked at for 2 weeks on there lol. Not really worried but you never know. Every step of the process has been a roller coaster

Just keep studying. You never know. If anyone in doesn’t doesn’t pass the medical or background check. Pretty sure they lll start calling others asap to fill the class.

Again you were right lol  so I got the call yesterday and she informed that I'm in the class that starts August 2nd but keep studying because if anyone mails background or medical I'm next up and going to be pushed into the April class but they'll try to inform me by the middle of next week if they do move me

Thank you for your congrats, I appreciate it. Keep the faith, you may still get called for April. If somebody gets jammed up on the medical or background, that could push you up. I also spoke with another guy from our class who was called for April but chose to defer to August because of a personal situation he has going on at the moment. So that pushed somebody else up who otherwise wouldn't have been in the April class. So you never know, it could be April, but if not, at least you know the beginning part is pretty much done and you'd be a lock for August

Yeah maybe they're still making calls, never know gotta look at the glass half full, If it's the April class just more time to master everything !

I got the call this morning about April 12. I got a 92 on the final

Congrats congrats brother I got a 89 perhaps I Didn't make the cut for this class and I'm in August :( Nevertheless A lot of learning ahead ! You'll be operating trains by the time I start lol Good Luck Bro !

Congrats to those moving on to phase 2.  Life changer.  I’m sure Dre has said this, but keep up on what you have already learned.  They are only going to add to it and you don’t want to be play catch up.  I’m going on 2 years qualified and I still think of the definitions and indications as I operate.  It all matters and plays a role on day to day operations.  See you out there.

Every part of the process is nerve wrecking tbh lol it's great getting support and advice from Engineers who've been through the fire already

I hope so bro. Based on people I've spoken with, there are 4 others that I know have gotten it. 14 people will fit in the April class

I haven't gotten any word yet but I've spoken to one of the people that scored the 2nd highest in our class he got a 94 he got called to start April 12th they just called him a couple hours ago.

I just passed my test 3/4, I was in your class for sure lol. I just joined this forum when I found this thread/comment

No call from HR yet right?

What's Up, Congratulations Brother. I've yet to receive any email or call from HR in regards to phase 2 or medical or background checks. I'll be sure to keep you updated !

  18. Thank You Bro hopefully I can shadow you in the future, run some trains with you or something, a lot of the stuff you've shared has helped tremendously !!! So our class started with 36 people, the biggest phase 1 class they ever had, people were dropping every week, we got down 20 people and 17 of us passed. Dedication and Discipline bro no matter what, I can't think of a sound worse than that Velcro ripping open on the rule book LOL

  19. DDDRRREEEEEEE !!! Passed the Phase 1 final today man !!! Last 6 weeks were HELL LMAO literally nothing could have prepared me for that. Rules Instructor said it was the easiest test we're going to take for a while too. This is just a complete lifestyle change man I had to sacrifice so much to past and this is only the beginning !! I'm beyond excited, a lot of work man! Gotta take the 2nd part of my medical with drug tests and then background test and just wait to figure out if I'm in the class starting in April or the class starting in August !

Thanks Dre, really needed to hear that. I already spoke with my boss & luckily she's pretty flexible with my work hours so I cut it down starting next week. I really want to feel confident in this material b/c I know this is a great opportunity that doesn't present itself often. Feeling like I don't know enough this early is admittedly discouraging, but just have to keep at it with the studying. I think the extra time will definitely help so I can really give this my all.

Same man sometimes some encouraging words are what we all need. I'm working full time and doing this is insane.I just worked the overnight, slept 3 hrs went to do my physical in Mineola and now I'm sitting outside of Hillside in the car studying right now because it makes no sense to go home and come back out here. This is not for the weak it's only 2 classes in and I feel that I'm so behind, spent hours upon hours making index cards.

Seems like We all got our own sob story tho smh just got to keep pushing forward I guess.

Def gotta tell the instructor slow down a bit found myself playing catch up at the last class.
