  1. thanks for clarifying it for me and I was refering to the E track. BTW what are the purposes of wheel detectors like at Queens Plaza?

Leave it to the experts on the topic to answer fully, but I always assumed those were because when pulling into the station on the R, the tail of the train is still clearing the switch from the 11 st cut. Interestingly, I could be wrong, but I'm not sure those WD's are always active, as I've definitely been on a fair number of trains that came in faster than 10.

  2. MTA Service Status

    Service Change Posted: 10/21/2014 7:17PM

Due to signal problems at East Broadway, some northbound f.png trains are running on the a.png line from Jay St-MetroTech to W 4 St-Washington Sq.

    Allow additional travel time.

    Service Change Posted: 10/21/2014 6:21PM

Due to signal problems at 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr, the following service changes are in effect:

Some northbound f.png trains are running on the g.png line from Bergen St to Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av.

71 Av-bound m.png trains are running with delays.

    Allow additional travel time.

What a nightmare for the (F) train riders.

    Indeed.

But the F train woes spared the QBL.

For a while last evening all N/b service was local on the local because of a sick customer at Roosevelt. The Gap in F service meant this didn't cause bad delays, there was room for the E on the local. The subway giveth, and the subway taketh

  3. What's going on along Queens Blvd this week?

The website claims the N/B (R) is running express after 9:45, but there's no accompanying service change for the (M), which seems odd.

Yet, there was a sign at Rockefeller center saying the M ends early this week - but this information isn't reflected on the web at all.

Was there a cancelled G.O. that only got half-deleted from the advisories and some errant signs remained up?

It's this sort of conflicting information that gets under my skin. There's nothing worse than working a 12 hour day and wondering which of the contradictory pieces of information actually affects your trip home.

  4. It seems that lines with R160's are generally more on time.

The 8 fewer doors per train increases loading times on the R46's, that's what's slowing them down.

Add to that the northbound R trains have over a dozen more stops at which to get slowed down than they did on the split route, and I guarantee evening northbound R service will be worse than it was when it was split.

  5. Since the Montague tunnel is repaired, which will be the next that will be worked on and how will it impact service?

I'm not sure any of them need work like Montague did. If you recall, when they reopened montague it was several instances of delays because of signal problems every single day.

I think most of the other tubes have been pretty much okay since the storm. I'm not saying they won't need work, but I doubt there will a multiple-months closure.

  6. Here's a radical proposal that actually makes a difference: rebuild terminals with more capacity.

It's absolutely stunning that trains often take longer to wait outside of a terminal than for a person to simply walk there (if they could get off the train). Less often, there's also the conga line of trains stretching several stations before the terminal. This is going to be a bigger problem with the (Q) in the future as long as the (T) never sees the light of day (not that it would literally, being a completely underground route). In fact, it's a problem with all trains headed to Coney Island as far as I've experienced, and probably applies to the ends of other lines.

I'm going to go so far as say we need to add a third track to terminals with only two (and another platform for the extra track). The (7) could, in fact, use even more than three given its rush hour frequency.

The proposed Phase 2 for the Second Avenue Subway had better plan for a three-track terminal.

I feel like a properly configured 2-track stub terminal can turn more trains than a 3 track terminal. Maybe it's just perception, but I think the added complexity of the interlocking for a three track terminal actually causes more delays. (E.G. a train departing from one track can actually cause the other 2 tracks to be blocked). I'm gonna look up Main St's capacity versus the South Ferry stub terminal.

  7. Yo what the hell!? Might as well start a subway bedbug random thoughts thread on here: http://pix11.com/2014/09/06/another-bedbug-report-pulls-r-train-out-of-service-photo/

"NEW YORK (PIX11) - Yet another bedbug sighting has straphangers watching where they sit and the MTA scrambling to rid the cars of any possible blood-sucking critters.

Billy Grijalva told PIX11 he was riding a Bay Ridge-bound R train Saturday afternoon when he spotted one of the icky insects as the train stopped at DeKalb Avenue."

First the N some other lines now the R! Wow..

Honestly, I feel like there will always be a handful of bedbugs on the subway because there will always be a handful of people bringing them ON to the subway.

There aren't great places for them to hide, and they usually run from light, and generally don't feed on the awake - so i feel like it would be very hard for a subway car to truly get infested.

  8. Great catch! Where did it terminate?

I heard on the radio it was to terminate at 71/Continental, not sure if it got all the way there, I got out at 46.

Thanks for the info, I wonder how confused the passengers were? Tourists would be baffled.

The passengers were incredibly confused and annoyed. The C/R made an unintelligible and inaudible announcement before QP, and when we got there there was a lot of frustration.

Actually, in fact, after we left QP the T/O gets on the PA, also frustrated, and started his announcement with "Attention passengers, AND the conductor, this is your train operator speaking. This is now an R train"

I wish I recorded his speech. It was fantastic. I do specifically remember "Whatever the R line stops are - we're making 'em. That includes steinway st, 74-ah- I dunno what the stops are, I'm supposed to be on the N line, but whatever they are, those are the stops we're making."

The train was basically empty after 36 st, and almost completely empty after Steinway. Nobody really got on either, because nobody had any idea where the train would end up.

Honestly I don't know why they didn't just reprogram the FIND for the R line. (Though that would have not made for an exciting photo at all)

  9. Because of some kind of smoke or fire condition at Queensboro Plaza, the (Q) train I was on got sent over the Romeo.

Now, I was only on the Q because I just missed the R, and the walk from the Q is only like 10 minutes longer so I just took the next train from 57/7. But, the reroute actually worked out in my benefit - while simultaneously infuriating everyone else.

Whatever was going on at QBP it didn't last long because this is the only service alert about it:

    5:13 PM
Due to an earlier incident at Queensboro Plaza, N and Q train service has resumed with residual delays.[/size]

But anyway, snapped a pic for all yall.

  10.

    4:41 PM:

s/b 1 trains exp 96 St to 42 St, some s/b 2 trains local 42 St to Chambers St, due to NYPD activity at 59 St. Allow additional travel time.

Heard this one on the radio and I'm going to quote directly because I laughed so hard I had to write it down:

"southbound at 86st, 79st, 72st, 66st stop and stay, I repeat stop and stay. We have a report of a turtle on the roadbed at 59st. they are attempting to retrieve the turtle."

    ... several seconds later

"RCC, that isn't a ninja turtle, is it?"

  11. And if it's the R46s making the (R) suck so much, why isn't the (A) as bad?

I mean, I do have to agree the R is much better with 160's - however, it also has a much shorter route when it's truncated to whitehall. I bet the route does more to improve service than the cars - that said, the A generally runs with much shorter headways than the R, so when the R is running it's full route and a train gets delayed, the whole line suffers a LOT. The 46's are definitely more prone to being delayed than the 160's - but still.

LOL...  It is... The (A) just runs more frequently...

    HEY! WE AGREE ON SOMETHING!

    Let's see...

R62s & 68s - Poor lighting and poor AC (save in the middle of the car)

                       - Terrible swaying and buzzing sound

                       - Illegible/garbled announcements for the most part

I wouldn't call those "rail-worthy", but rather cars that are needed because they need them for service.  Nothing more than that.

R46s  - Stuck in a time warp with that hideous 70s design

              - Lighting is better, but the doors take FOREVER to close

              - The (R) was plagued with them over the years and probably why service sucks so much on the line

              - I've used the (R) once or twice recently, and both times they've been R160s.... What a difference a car makes...

R32s & R42s - Well what can be said about them aside from the fact they should've been retired years ago... lol

What are you even on about. the 68's probably have the best AC in the system. I can't recall ever being on one that wasn't frigid. The 62's, well, some are okay others less so in terms of climate, but still.

The 68's do have that PA buzz sometime. Seems to be poorly shielded lines. It's not loud, and it's not a big deal. The announcements are usually fine.

I actually prefer the 62's to the 142's. I'll usually let the 2 pass and wait for the 3 because, well, I for one PREFER the dimmer lighting. The new cars' lighting is harsh. The 62's don't jolt to a start nearly as bad, but they're just as fast.

But to each their own. For instance, I loathe bus service. We're allowed to have preferences, but "Rail-worthy" isn't a very high standard. Several R1-9's are "Rail Worthy" - they run every year -  but you certainly wouldn't see them in rush hour service....

(though that would be damn cool)

    Service Change  Posted: 08/13/2014  6:45PM

Due to trains with mechanical problems between 8 Av and Myrtle Av, there is no l.png train service between Broadway Junction and 8 Av in both directions.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say CBTC went down. Sorry hipsters, get out your bikes or something.

  13. Have they ever thought of connecting The Staten Island Railway to Manhattan Via NJ?

That seems like it'd be more trouble than it would be worth.

It would be easier to tunnel under the harbor and connect it to the 4av line in brooklyn. Something similar was proposed as far back as 1939, but this was pre-unification so instead of connecting to the then-BMT 4av line they were to connect to the unbuilt IND line along fort hamilton pkway.

  14. So, here's some random for you: heard on the scanner two seperate calls to RCC about people smoking cigarettes on board trains. One was a s/b (1) just after 9:30 am, one was a n/b (F) a little before 6 pm. Is this more common than I'd think or was someone touring the system seeing if they could smoke a whole pack today. Geez.

  15. Service Change Posted: 08/02/2014 6:00PM

Due to ongoing track maintenance at Forest Hills-71 Av, the following service changes are in effect:

Northbound e.png, f.png and r.png trains are running with delays.

Some northbound r.png trains terminate at 57 St-7 Av.

    Allow additional travel time.

This was a [insert string of expletives].

I was trying to get home from Brooklyn - R train was fine NB until just shy of queens plaza. It then took 35 minutes to get to 36 street at which point I said f-this I'll walk.

I was in the head car and walked to the front to see what was going on - I heard rail control get on the radio and tell c/R's to tell customers to call and complain - then the c/r came on and told us to call and complain - and gave the number.

I know maintenance has to be done but geez if it's going to get that bad just tell me to take the bus.

  16. It's so weird seeing those R68As back on the (N). It's a blast from the past.

Isn't it? I like the transverse seating when you can get a window seat at least. On the occasions I take the N I'm getting on at 30th ave so the train has only made two stops and is usually pretty sparse toward the front.

I happened to catch one just by chance Tuesday morning, snapped a photo just because.

  17. Does anyone know if the (R) is running to 9th ave tonight between 10 and midnight?

I think last year it was supposed to but in end they just terminated them Pacific downtown express.

Maybe someone knows their plans for this week

Service advisories list the R running between 9th Ave & Court St between 10pm and midnight.  There would be no point to run it Court-Pacific.  (TripPlanner shows shuttle buses running at 8 minute headways, which does not seem nearly enough to handle the massive crowds from both N and R train riders.)

    bPgoeu2.png

R.png service in Brooklyn operates as follows:

10 PM to 12 midnight:  Between Court St and 36 St, Brooklyn and via the D.png to/from 9 Av

12:01 AM to 5 AM:  Service does not operate.

So yes, between 10 and midnight the R runs between Court St and 9th Ave.

I'd imagine they'd tell you to take the 2/4 to travel between Atlantic and Court St.

If you really needed to get to Jay St metrotech and didn't want to transfer via street level, I suppose one would get off the R and onto the F at 4th av/9th st.

Are there massive crowds of N and R train riders after 10pm? I'm not sure I've been out that way during those hours but I'm sure the busing will be sufficient, if annoying.

  18. Okay, but then I waited 30 minutes for my  (R) to come today. Ratio: 5  (N) to 6  (Q) to 1  (R) . I thought the MTA could've done better. -.-

Right. Hence why they need to add more weekend R service when the 7 isn't running.

Overcrowding leads to delays. Delays lead to overcrowding. The cycle continues and the delays are residual.

Although - that sounds more like the aftermath of some sort of earlier incident.

  19. I think they can do more when the  (7) terminates at 74th Street-Broadway. They already increased  (E) train service, but now for some other things.  (Q) and  (R) trains should swap terminals, and the  (F) should run local, with the  (Q) replacing it. When the  (7) terminated at Queensboro Plaza and the  (Q) got extended to Astoria, it's so that Broadway riders can get to the  (7) via express. So if  (Q) trains are extended to Forest Hills, then Broadway express riders can transfer to the  (7) at Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue.

All they have to do is add more (R) train service. The riders from the flushing line don't transfer to the (E) - they transfer to the (R).  Yes the (E) is faster but the (R) is an easier transfer.

If you don't believe me see for yourself. R trains are loaded to the gills weekends when the 7 isn't running.

  20. What is the point of making Jamaica Yard 100 percent 160? Also does JAM even have enough 46s to cover both N and Q service?

Actually, a while ago this variation on the rumor was posted in a separate thread that helps explain it and offers a little context:

The plan is coney island yard will only keep 140 R160s and get jamaica's remaining r46

R46 will run on (B) line and left over to the (N)

R68 will return to the (Q) and (N) and will stay on (G)

    R160 stays on the (N) and (W)

This information cames from operations of

    planning

btw guys this plan wont (if it even happens) happen in about 2 years or so due to queens blvd CBTC

That makes a little more sense than making the Nancy/Quincy 100% R46.

And yes - eventually JYD will have to be 100% NTT - specifically NTT converted for CBTC. But as mentioned that isn't a priority for several years.

So, if you'll permit me to speculate wildly, there are scenarios where the switch would need to happen now. Say, hypothetically some equipment specifically needed for R46 maintenance at JYD needed to be replaced, and then there's the thought process "why would we replace this, the yard is going to be all NTT in a few years?" - it could, COULD make more sense to have the yard be all NTT now and install the needed equipment/use the needed equipment elsewhere.

Or, Maybe they're going to be adding the CBTC gear to the 160's at Jamaica and they need all the cars there because they are going to start that soon - this makes sense - you need all the cars equipped before the system goes live and you would want to leave yourself plenty of time to do the installs.

Long and short - There are reasons why you'd want to do it and want to do it soon, but I will believe it when I see it and no sooner.

  21. Rumor: (N) & (Q) might be getting all the R-46 from the (F) & (R) to allow Jamaica Yard to be 100% R-160.

    Source: Gossip.

Whoa. I know there's a lot of love out there for the R46 but if this happens I predicts numerous delays on the broadway line. The (M) became the worse of the two options with the (R) becoming the better when the Romeo and Fox switched equipment.
