  1. Oh yeah it's coming depmaze, just b patient. I'm 21xx. So as I stated b4 I just got my pre employment letter in the mail. It was dated on nov 12 for appt date nov 22. Somehow it got mixed up well any way. I spent this weekend filling out the paper work that asks 4 10 yrs employment history and 10 yrs history of where u have lived. So I am in my 40's and needles to say I hav had a lot of jobs within the last 10 yrs and lived a lot of places. At 9 this morning I called DCAS to explain that I didn't get my letter in time. Person I spoke to said that I had to speak to someone to see when they would be doing DT for my job title I was transferred to Ms Shivers VM. I left message. I figured it was best to go in person so I filled out what I could and this morning went to SS office to get a work history print out. Cost me $35. Used it to fill in gaps. Went to 180 Livingston at about 11am. I was told by a person behind a desk that I had to call Ms Shivers and find out when they would b processing for train operators. She gave me Ms Shivers business card and I left discouraged. I figured this was gonna set me back at least a month more on top of the month I already lost. So I felt like crap. B4 boarding bus I tried Ms Shivers again. She answered and she asked me to come back so I could take the DT. I guess there was a mix up or some one wanted to start the holidays early but Ms Shivers was great she asked me to come back. I went back filled out some more paperwork. Verified my veterans status. Took drug test and was out by 1pm. I feel great now. I know it probably won't reach me till bout June but it's good to have something happening. Good luck to all. Your time will come. List # 21xx

Have some faith brother..they're hiring through the end of next year.

  2. I have a criminal record (fraud, misdemeanor, probation, no jail time, 11 years ago). I've got a Certificate of Relief from court which grants a relief from ban to employment. Is this record gonna be a problem for me to get a job in NYCTA as a bus operator? Is anybody familiar with this situation? Thanks.

I have a 10 year old felony and I work for transit as a train operator. Be truthful, have disposition papers for every conviction and you'll be fine. good luck

  3. Hey guys, I have been reading this topic forum for a while and I must admit I have learn a lot... I too have taken the TO 8098 exam and would love to be called... My question ( I already know the answer to this but it doesn't hurt to ask) is do I have a shot to be called with a list number at 70XX ...

I am happy for the guys who have been called and wish them good luck...

Unfortunately, the list will expire before they call you. Sorry.

Got called in for the DT On the 20th...list number in from 1990-2010... When should I expect to be called in for the medical?/? Thanx Fellas!!!!

Usually within 2 weeks, but then again, this is transit.

Afternoon guys, im actually in the 1660's and went for for final processing December 5th and got into the December 16th class. Im not sure if they are taking anyone else for the 16th class but im sure they will get to list numbers in the 1700 range for next class. Good Luck to everyone and whoever else is in the December 16th class I will see you then.

    Congrats!

  4. This monday I'll be on my final week of posting. The following week consists of the final exam and road practical. Lord willing I'll be out of school car 12/22. My advice to all the recent inductees is as follows. Study Signals, read your induction book through and thoroughly. Study signals, don't be nervous or get intimidated, YOU are the train operator, you control the train don't let it control you! Study signals, study rule book and memorize the rules that pertains to your title, study signals, and most importantly, pay attention! Get enough rest. It sucks when you're tired and locked in that cab with nothing but clanking steel to listen to and no one to talk to. Good luck everyone!

  5. A division training is 4 months and B division is 6 months also for now they are having train operators do 3 months in the yard halfway thru training in addition to the regular training. As far as the signals quiz dont worry about it you will have time to prepare for it I belive they give it to you before they sent you to the yard for 3 months. Dont get to far ahead of yourself, as long as you study and pay attention you will be fine.

Actually, A Division training is 7 months and the B Division is 9 months

  6. Quick question to the people who handed in their 21 page booklet.

Literally on day of medical when did you hand in your 21 page booklet?  Immediately when you got there? After medical? Before medical?

The reason I ask is I want to ask them for another booklet because I made some mistakes by writing on the wrong line, crossing it out and it looks sloppy. I don't want to hand in something looking like that. It doesn't look professional. I wanted to go today but it was closed.  I was hoping they would give me a booklet and I have time to rewrite it on the new one.

    Thanks.

You hand it in at the very end to your interviewer.

  7. And that is exactly the attitude you cannot have. Let me just throw out some advice. You can take it or not and I can honestly tell you I wouldn't be offended either way but this is a dog eat dog profession we're in. There are some senior guys and crew room lawyers that will eat your for breakfast. They get off on making you feel as small as possible mainly because they been there so long they got nothing else to get them interested. Mind you they are the minority and a majority of your peers will be lovely, nice and outgoing. That's the good part, but the negative attitudes can take their toll which is why:

When you walk in that crew room - YOU ARE A TRAIN OPERATOR!

When it's time for you to take your practicals, quizzes or any other tests pertaining to the profession you - YOU ARE A TRAIN OPERATOR!

When it comes time to go posting - YOU ARE A TRAIN OPERATOR!

When you make it through school car and hit the road - YOU ARE A TRAIN OPERATOR!

When someone else tries to instill doubts in you about you - YOU ARE A TRAIN OPERATOR!

You are only as good as your last move and if you make your last move better than the one before it you will be one of the best TRAIN OPERATORS!

All in all you have to put this in perspective. You get paid a lot of money for transit to train you for the profession meaning money is being paid by transit to make you a TRAIN OPERATOR. Months are spent getting you prepared and even though some debate whether the training is good or not it's definitely good because we have the best Train movers worldwide. You are given every opportunity to succeed before they take your tools from you so it's up to YOU to make the best of it, therefore: There can be no such thing as you might not have this job. It's that type of thinking that makes even the best too nervous during practicals that mistakes, they wouldn't make otherwise, are made causing failure. From this point forward remember who you are. The crew room vultures smell believers and doubters as soon as they step in the room!

F#©*ing A!!! Your the man RTO. Couldn't gave said it better myself.

  8. It's not about fearing ATS. Signals in the A division have plenty of problems and when one trips a train randomly it's the T/O's fault until the same thing happens to the following train. It's a monthly occurrence. ATS will change your punch after you've made your selection and left the station. ATS will give you wrong line ups. None of this is about fearing ATS. It's about learning the craft of being a T/O in the A division involves expecting the unexpected and then to top it all off when you operate through all of that madness and you make it past 149th/GC n/b you leave ATS territory and go back to manually controlled tower operation up at Unionport where line ups get pulled from T/Os almost daily.

On situations like this, the event recorders on the train as well as on the signals well save you. It's the brighter side of ATS

  9. What time does school car usally end during the first few weeks i know we have to be there @ 7:30 but what time do they let you out? I will be commuting from suffolk county just want an idea of when i'll be home for dinner.

You can pretty much count on 8 hour days until you start posting, but I wouldn't count on the 0730 start, they're doing night schoolcar as well.

  10. You can say that but that doesn't make the A division that much less of a challenge. Yes there are less types of equipment by comparison and less points of no return to learn but ATS creates its own share of side issues you have to learn to deal with. And in the A ATS is always right and the T/O is always wrong unless there are some mitigating circumstances.

ATS can either with for you or against you. If you go out and know what you're doing and be attentive then you should not fear ATS. Hit a signal? Overran a station? Be truthful and consider it to be lube.

  11. I start in the July 29 class. Are new-hires given the opportunity to select a Divison? Because of where I live, I would pick "A" Divison. (However, I am most familiar with certain "B" lines-- the BMT Broadway, Brighton, Sea Beach, Fourth Avenue, and West End lines. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to choose B Divison - BMT only.)

Yes, you get to pick, given that there is still room in the division you want when called upon to pick. Promotionals get first pick then they call the OC guys in seniority order.

Is the A division easier to learn because there's only two types of trains?

The A Division has fewer equipment than the B. Training is 3 months less also. You have to learn the same, rules, signals, etc. Operation is relatively the same, you just have to learn the technical part for each equipment.
  12. When will the list expire?

    September 2016

Decided to call this morning. The liaison told me that the 6/24 class was filled and the last # hired was 1061. There will be a class in July and August but they just dont have the dates confirmed yet.

Alright!! Moves me up in seniority..lol. Seriously though, I'm happy more people are coming in. Congrats to those who made the June class.

  13. may class update: 1st 3 days were HR/union workshops on policies, rules, regulations, benefits, and division pick. i picked the a division. tmo we get our footwear and other training material. i was assigned t28... is that my class name/#?

made some new buds. i got a good feeling...

Yes, TA-28 is our class name. Can't wait to actually start some real training.

  14. I went in this week for medical/final processing. I scored a 95 on the exam, and my list number is between 925-975.

I breezed through all of the medical exams with flying colors. Everything was going great! That is, until I saw the TA doctor.

I was put on the dreaded medical hold. All because I take a prescribed medication for anxiety. It's a low-dose, and I've taken it for years with no side effects. (My automobile driving record is spotless. I've operated all kinds of machinery-- except for subway cars-- without the slightest issue.) But the TA doctor said the medication is prohibited in "public safety-sensitive titles".

My dad and my uncle each did 30 years with the TA, and retired with pensions. I have wanted to be a motorman for a long time. I waited four just to get a letter from the OC list. Now I'm on medical hold, and I don't know what to do!

The medication I take really helps me. I've never had any issues with it, in any way. But the TA will not clear me until I am completely off the Rx. They want proof from my physician that I am no longer prescibed it. My physician would have to completely change my treatment regimen. I would need to undertake a long, uncomfortable, and potentially harmful withdrawal process. To the TA, this is preferrable to just allowing me to take my Rx and move forward. My motor-skills are unaffected! My physician went so far as to write a letter certifying my fitness for duty. But the TA doesn't care.

I am truly stuck between a rock and a hard place. Why should I have to undergo this long and difficult process, of which the outcome is uncertain-- and have no guarantee from the TA that I'll even have a job! They won't hold a spot for me. I feel that their position on this matter is totally unreasonable. I just don't know what to do. Can anyone advise? I am desperate.

The side effects of anxiety medication are very contradictive to a safety sensitive job, regardless of how you feel, the potential risk of the side effects raises a huge red flag. which is why you were placed on hold. My suggestion is to speak to your doctor and see what options you have.

  15. Got thru medical yest, in at 7:10am out by 2pm, thanks 2 every1 on this site for keepn heads informed. please take your ekg else where while ur not nervous/hype to be there, could save you some time.

Got sworn in, start class Jun 24 looking forward to meeting everyone

    Congrats!

  16. 7:30 they start business. You can get there early but they won't do anything until after 7:30

It is at 0730, but the earlier you arrive, the lower the ticket number..therefore the quicker you're out of there and on your way to schoolcar. Good luck!

  17. List # 1200s Did my drug test last week, was there for about 5 hours. The reason for the second letter was because of the error for the salary, which is $30.0375. Waiting on the call to come in for medical.

Try to get there around 0630. You'll get there before anybody, buy when the receptionist arrives she'll tell you that you can go upstairs with her. You'll get one of the first numbers if not the first and you should be out of there fairly quick.

  18. What kind of questions do they ask about your current employer on the 10-page-booklet mailed to you with the drug test date report and on the dreaded 21-page-booklet as well. And do they want anything from your current employer, letters etc??? How does that work?

They don't ask for anything from previous employers. They just ask you to disclose every job you've had in the past 10 years. Nothing much different from any other job app.

  19. OT comes in two ways.. (My opinion) Unscheduled OT, Road blows up you get turned resulting in late clears or extra trips,or a lay up for a late clear.

Working on a Day off is the other(Which you have to put your name on the list for).

The other as a New TO isnt advisable.

Thank you for answering RTO. I'm anxious to start schoolcar. I hope I made a good decision by leaving Mack Trucks UAW 677 to work for Transit.

  20. Last day of Schoolcar today. Did the Project Straight Talk, and went to 34 St to get our EED keys.

Can't believe it's over. 6 months went by fast; seems like just yesterday that we were crammed into the room at 130 Livingston.

Thank you to all the Motormen who took us under their wings during our Yard and Road Postings.

Thank you to all of the Conductors for being patient with our slow assess, and not pulling the cord on us.

Most importantly, thank you to our Motor Instructors. You took a rag-tag group of know-nothings, and turned them into Train Operators. It was not easy, and there were some frustrating and aggravating times, but it was a blast, and the reward was definitely worth it.

First assignment tomorrow: (C) out of 168 St.

    To TB-29, "Good job."

Awesome! Congrats! I spoke to you before. Im the guy from Macungie. I start SchoolCar on Monday!
