Faced with a tough decision. Got called for Pre- employment and I just took the physical for fdny firefighter. I'm expected to be in the next June class, worse case maybe next dec (a year away). should I start Mta n then leave for fire, or just wait for fire. Firefighter has always been my dream job, train operator was just the backup. Just looking for opinions.

I had a similar decision to make back in June.  My list number is in the low 200s for Train Operator and I'm currently a Bus Operator.  I received a Pre-employment letter from DSNY around the same time I got my Pre-O letter for Train Operator.  I decided to put off the T/O position and pursue Sanitation because it's my number one choice.  I missed out on a class this year by about a hundred list numbers and will have to wait until next summer.  Still don't regret declining the T/O position because if it doesn't work out with DSNY next year or I end up hating the job, I can always reinstate my list number and take the T/O position.   It was a difficult decision to make because I knew I was giving up seniority as a T/O but ultimately I decided to pursue the job I wanted the most.

    Do

Does it come as an email or a phone call to come in for medical ? Also if for some reason or another they decided to not go with you as a candidate , do they still contact you or leave you hanging ? I wasn't in Thursday may 10 and heard nothing so far

For the medical they will send you an email.  Make sure you check your spam folder.  Don't know what they do if you don't get selected.  I'd imagine you would get a letter in the mail explaining why you weren't chosen.  Not sure though.

I am trying to decide if i should go for pre employment tomorrow. I obviously am dying to get on the job but starting in July would be ideal and I’m worried if i go tomorrow they will force me to start in June class.

They will not force you to start if you go to orientation.  Orientation is only day 1 and the first step of the hiring process which is paperwork, drug test, and giving you the 21 page booklet to take home and fill out.  You still have to do day 2 at Livingston which is more paperwork the medical, returning the 21 page booklet from day 1, and taking a photo for your employee pass. It's on this day, after you pass the medical, they will offer you a class to start.  They don't force you into a class.  They work with you and will let you know what classes are available. I'm currently a Bus Operator and the process was the same when I was hired. I was at Livingston for Train Operator on May 15th.  Waiting for the email to come in for the medical.

  4. Got my letter today.  Report to 180 Livingston on Tuesday May 15th with a list number of 21X.  Had two answers wrong according to my candidate record of answers.  I'm currently a Bus Operator with the MTA going on two years.  Was really starting to get comfortable as a B/O after making it through probation and getting better work as I gain more seniority.  Tough decision to make over the next few days.  Anyone else here currently working for the MTA in another department considering the Train operator position?

  5. Evans is cool; don't listen to Young. She trained me on the Novas and got at me for looking in my left mirror too much. Don't take what she says to heart. She's very cutthroat but if you get used to it and laugh it off, you'll be fine.

I trained with Evans on the Nova as well but Nova training comes after you qualify. You can't compare RTS,Nova,Flyer training with the 10 day qualifications. Classmate of mine hated her during the qualification because she's the military type who's always yelling at you for your mistakes. After you qualify and your on the bus with classmates, it's funny when the Superintendent is getting at you because you're already in, so there's nothing on the line. I like Evans too because it was all fun and games on the Nova, but I would not want her for my 7 day training.

  6. Have to tell you I wanted Castleton too. But being at Yukon for the last 3 weeks I like it and happy I'm there!! Good luck to all I'm loving the job!!!

Yukon definitely has better local routes but I love the atmosphere at Castleton.  Yukon is mostly Express and I'm not sure if that's what I want to do yet.  I have to experience it on my own but people seem to either love it or hate it.  How do you feel about express, Sergio?  Have you done it on your own yet?  Also, did you pick Yukon or were you forced there like my class?

  7. No..nothing particular. I'm planning to get myself re-instated next month. List 13xx. I want to transfer to Staten Island if get selected. I hear you can't pick Staten originally. How do you get the transfer?

We were told today by ATU union there wont be another TA class until March.  Only OA classes in Jan and Feb.

  8. Transferred before I picked, will be on Staten Island provided I pass my road test tomorrow. I selected Charleston at orientation, hopefully that comes through.

There's 7 of us from the 11/14 class who transferred to Staten Island.  We got in just before the system pick closed on Dec 29 but in the end it didn't matter.  Castleton and Charleston closed so we didn't get to pick a depot and were all forced to Yukon.  The Union is saying there's up to 40 operators who want to transfer out of S.I.  When they do, we'll have the opportunity to transfer to another depot since we didn't get to pick.  From what I've been hearing, most of those operators who are transferring out of S.I. are in Charleston and Yukon.  None of the 7 in my class want Charleston.  You can probably guess from my avatar where I'm heading once I get the opportunity.  I'd say you have a good chance of getting Charleston once those B/Os transfer out.

  9. Honestly I used skechers slip resistant work shoes 40 bucks at finish line. Looks like sneakers but more comfortable. That's just me.

    sent from my note4

Thanks.  I've actually seen those a few times in my search online.  I'll definitely take a look at them when I go shopping.  Almost fell on my ass a few times today at work.

  10. Ok, I did medical & final processing today. I'm in for the December 26th class. Just trying to figure out when I pick my depot. I'm switching from OA to TA so I don't have to do the 7-10 day training again (or probation). I thought maybe Monday but hearing it may be a day or two later according to someone else who was in the same situation not too long ago.

Congrats Hockey. I know you've been waiting a while to get closer to home. I'm currently line training in Staten Island. Just started the third depot today at Charleston. Eight students including myself from the Nov 14th class are picking depots on Dec 29th. There's more names on the board without a depot currently so I assume their in the class before us. They're picking on the same date as well.

  11. Hey wass up everyone any one knows by any chance when u do ur medical with mta do they pull up ur medical records also? Or do they just go based on there procedure and results? Any help will be appreciate thanjs

No they don't look at your medical history. They only know what you tell them on the day of your medical. You'll sit at a computer which asks you about your medical history. My answer to everything was "No" . Don't do their job for them. If there's anything wrong with you let them find it.
