  1.

I've mentioned a few times around this forum that I wish to return to New York once more. This was originally supposed to happen over the (Canadian) Thanksgiving break, but due to financial problems my parents suggested we push it back to Easter, or some such time around there, so that is what we did.

However, my mom, lately has become very much opposed to the idea of me visiting New York again. She's paranoid that something will happen to me, mostly fuelled by the shootings, people being showed down into the trackway in the subway, and that whole bizzare episode of the bikers attacking that guy on the highway a few months back.

I've tried pointing out to her that there are hundreds of transit fans on this forum who have never had anything happen to them, but she remains unconvinced. Would anyone have any advice on how I am supposed to convince her?

Here in New York City, I always avoid rough areas such as parks and residental homes. One day when I was walking home after getting off the B46 bus, I got beat up by a large group of unidentified high school students. This happen on East New York Avenue. Two couple comfort me afterwards and several cops who seen the students on the streets were on their tails.

From that point on, I've learn my lesson to not walk near any gangs. Another time is when two goons came up to me and demanding to know if I have a problem with "their mans". They also told me to come with them, and then I said "No. I don't even know who you guys or your friends are." They smack me and I ran off while they chased me. This happen on Rochester Avenue after I get off the (4) train to get home. I managed to loose them afterwards. I learn my lesson not to walk on streets where there's a large park across (For example, Lincoln Terrace Park is across the street).

There are bad things that can happen at certain times of the day/night. It just depends if there's any groups of gangsters consisting of two or more people. Always to stay alert and walk on busier streets/avenues where there are stores and shops. You can also walk on quiet areas but just make sure you aren't being followed by any thugs along the way, including at parks and when you're walking towards home. Just trying to make a valid point.

    Mean while in chicago...

I actually venture to the rough parts of the city, usually during midday and with another person. Mainly because all of the interesting planning/ non for profits are in the rough parts. I was down on 35th/46th last saturday... Not a rough part but still decaying. No problems. Actually a decent area imo.

South of 45th the warnings start to go up. But usually ive found its peaceful during the day.

Your risk of getting shot or killed is low compared to pickpocketing and other petty crime. I think people tend to overexaggurate crime. Having said that, people get shot every day here. We had a shooting on the CTA last night actually. In a part of the city that is relatively peaceful.

And i agree with the quiet areas part. I was in Lincoln Square, a kinda hipster part of the city , before sun down. Peaceful, quiet. I leave and two hours later at 7pm some one was shot and killed.

Here, i've had no issues. Havent bren to NYC to comment enough. But the same rules apply as they do here.

Btw when I go to boston... Im going to be the nut that goes down to Mattapan (not only to see thr PCC's) to see what its like and why it has a bad rep.

  2. I have had a headache of Metra issues.

Yesterday, at union station, one of Amtraks switch frogs broke, alonm with a rail and a train blew a signal. All at rush hour. The Union pacific -west, the other line i take, was packed and delayed.

So what did I do? Called my dad and told him to grt me in Roselle, near his work. I made it home jn time. The delays on the Union Station lines were so bad, trains were 80 minutes late.

Now, im on a UP West train, with no power or heat. In 19 degree weather. Joy.

  3. Well, i used to go like 7am, but with the stores opened after thursday night, the crowds aren't as bad like when it was the 'running of the bulls'. So in a way the crowds seem more spread out. I don't expect much, but I pick out whatever stuff is left. $10 for a bluray dvd movie that would've been $20+ isn't too bad. A $60 game for $35, very good. So this year I'm hoping to get gta5 for something like that especially since it's been out for over 2months.

Nothing on thursday. But usually it's a meal with the family and this year it'll be on the weekend since everyone's got their own plans with their family.

Tip from a worker in the inside.... the crowds die down from 4:30/5am to about 8am. They pick up after 8 to about 8pm or so. Was talking with a manager about our lack of floor coverage in the store (but 3 cashiers coming in with in a 2 hour period), and he explained it to me. Saw the numbers to back it up.

Interms of sales... we make 3-4x as much as we would a typical busy day, but then we are open from 10pm Thursday to midnight friday. Plus some one had the brigt idea to up our sales goals, when we have never made them before... usually make 80k, some one wants us to make 100k. hahahahah..no.

  4. A revelation of persistent problems that only worsen as time goes on.

This is only the surface of the discussion.

+1 for bringing it to attention.

It won't hit home until some real shit goes down. It's all a matter of waiting now.

No dodging bullets anymore, the ultimate test is amongst us all.

    It will go down.

you aint seen nothing yet... when i was on airline-empires... people were multi accounting to the point where they were causing extreme issues with servers (i think some one hacked). I had my period where I trolled that site but now its over.... it was 2 years ago... more important shit to do, sensible converstations to have.

  5. I hope not either, but yes there are still companies out there that specializes in the building of legacy devices such as floppy disk drives in case ones currently installed in desktop units fails. This why its possible (unbeliebveable as it sounds) that techs are updating the FIND programs using floppy disks. Ineffiency is the norm here in the MTA with notable exceptions as seen here in this phase of the ongoing discussion.

Yeah i see the inefficiencies. I wouldnt say its just the norm with the MTA however ;)

  6. Someone must have been smoking, jizzing their pants to some fantasy, or just did this for shits and giggles...

EDIT: I found another one, at Coney Island

Haha, with all of the data GIS technicians deal with, there is some room for error. This is google maps right? If you want to edit a point with them btw... the process is stupid and insane. I dropped out of editing with them because of the politics.

I doubt they're using floppy discs for this. At least I hope they're not. Where would you find a computer with a floppy drive nowadays anyhow?

Oddly enough, there is an interesting constant in all of these errors. The erroneous transfer listings are either from different lines or from reroutes on the chosen line. The 14 St-6 Av transfers come from the (F) line, the Union Tpke transfers come from the (R) to 179 St option Meanwhile, as N6 Limited stated, the transfers shown on the (F) option come from either the (C) or (E) lines. There is also the numerous reports of the "(N) to Manhattan" appearing at Coney Island on the (N) options. That obviously comes from the (N) via West End option.

Like I said, hopefully this is fixed sooner rather than later because frankly, this is just ridiculous.

Many medical computers still use floppies. Or atleast I've heard.

  7. I find windows phone being better than android and ios. Used to love ios, gave android multiple chances, but WP8 is ghr best. App sellection is improving, performance is great, better than ios at times. And we have lots of updates coming

  8.

    Yes.

In 1999 the MTA proposed an (N) train extension to La Guardia Airport. However Albany and local officials opposed the idea and refused to allocate funding for the project killing the MTA proposal. State Senator George Onorato and Assemblyman Denis Butler at a hearing on May 11th of that year if I recall correctly expressed grave opposition to the idea and vowed to stop the project from taking off the ground, despite the efforts of former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to make it happen.

    They succeeded.

So how is the bus? Is it reasonable or slow?

  9. Has there ever been a proposal for a direct subway connection to Laguardia?

It seems odd... I mean unless the busses are ok.

Chicago built the Orange line in the late 90's, direct to Midway. Midway was nearly dead until the 90's, when WN (Southwest) came in and took 95% of the traffic.

I mean LGA is a pretty major airport. But the transit links seem iffy.

Any opinion? Ramblings of an urban planner here.

It doesnt have to be long trains or quick headways. Maybe a shuttle?

  10. lol... I can see why... All of the drunks and freaks are on that train.  <_<

Atleast it was ontime.... Had to rush between two Metra lines today because a signal decided to go kaput and they had to hardline trains through the area. Mind you... this is on a 3 track railroad, with speeds at 79+ (they call it the "Speedway", before an accident in the 40's trains used to hit 90-100 mph).

Made it with one minute to spare.....

Ugh. That is the single most worst train on the Hudson Line expecially on Friday and Saturday nights. From the few times I've worked it I have nothing good to say about it.

How is it during sporting events and St Patty's day?

  11. I seriously hate strict professors.  For this one class I'm taking, I could rewrite an assignment 40 times and cover EVERY comment she has to make and she'd still send it back and tell me to rewrite it.  Funny thing is, her ass TOLD me she liked it on Wednesday.  I tried not to go to Ratemyprofessor because it's hard to tell who's really rating from experience and where Chad Thundercock-on-a-scholarship is ranting in poorly typed English because he wanted an easy "A" and never got it, but I know she'd definitely be below a 1.9, and that's a high estimate.

If professors are supposed to maintain a certain passing rate but never curve, whose '''' are they sucking to keep their jobs?

    Is he/she a PHD student?
