  1. I honestly think you're getting things mixed up...

The term "No Driving Restrictions" means that there are no restrictions on your license that would prevent you from driving an MTA bus, such as "G", "L", "N1", "N2", etc. A "B" restriction would be acceptable. See the second page of this DMV document for a complete list of the codes and restrictions.

As far as accidents/points/tickets are concerned, that's a different story. I know you're not allowed to have more than two [2] accidents within the past three years, regardless of who was at fault, no more than 4 points, regardless of how many defensive driving classes you took, all of your tickets have to be paid, nothing outstanding nor nothing pending, etc.

Got it? If not, feel free to post why, we're all here to help each other out.

It's three accidents in the past 3 years (if I knew how to upload images on here I'd upload the copy of the document, the document also states"OR (1) IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS FOR BUS OPERATOR CANDIDATES" I took a picture of it from my friend. Under the No Driving Restrictions state that (A3 and Eyeglasses) are stated as okay on the document as well.

Thanks for you advice though, greatly appreciated :D . I told him basically wait until it's been a year before he reinstates himself (basically in October). I just hope that 4600 last until October before this list is exhausted. As far as myself, I know they won't allow me to drive with my hand in a brace so I myself have not reinstated until I get my hand out of the brace (around August), hopefully they got a class and everything goes smoothly. I'm using this time to finish my B permit.

I called today to find out and I must say, Human Resources/Personnel there has a nasty attitude. Before we even spoke, no greeting, What do you want? Who answers a business phone like that?

Question, not trying to get ahead of myself and while staying in the realm of this thread, what is driving a bus in the night time like? I imagine as a rookie, they give you the worst shift aka the nights, is that bad with drunk drivers and reduced visibility? What are the passengers like drunk and disruptful or just the regular overnight workers trying to get home/work?

I posted alot and haven't said thank you enough, even though I'm still going through the process, I have had alot of my concerns answered and addressed promptly and clearly, thank you to everyone for your assistance and advice. I can never state that enough.

  2. I knew nothing about emails, so I went I'm person to centre street. The funny thing was when explaining why I needed to be reinstated I was told to put "please" at the end........go fig. But I'm just curious to know how it works.

If you went in person why do you have to put please? You had to fill out a form? Where did you go? DCAS at One Centre Street in Manhattan?

  3. Does anyone know exactly how the picks go for employment if you reinstate your name. If they are up to list #31xx but list 10xx reinstates, when would 10xx get called? And is there a hold on classes I'm getting all different answers nothing certain from mrs chestnut. 1 min it's they'll be calling in beginning of may to it may be another 3 months b4 another call. Patience is a virtue lol.

I'm having the same issue for myself, someone told me yes but then someone said I have to wait.

I have reinstated my name in February and haven't heard anything. I would assume they would get the updated list from DCAS this summer.

I was also concerned because like Frank, I'll have to reinstate when I'm medically fit which might be in August so I was wondering if I'd get called for the class that's supposed to be after the summer. But then like tdevon2012, I was wondering if I reinstate in July, would I be waiting months  before I was called despite having an even higher list number of 12xx as he is 10xx and still hasn't been called since July.

As far as my friend's situation who had the accident, someone told him to disclose the accident when he reinstates :excl:  but wait until October, which was the date of his accident so that it would be a year after the accident and thus doesn't fall into the (1) ACCIDENT IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS FOR BUS OPERATOR CANDIDATES  category as was stated on the same form for NO DRIVING RESTRICTIONS. How sound is this advice?

Also, how do you go about being reinstated? Do you just call or do you have to go there at Livingston Street in person. If you just call, the number to reinstate is it (347) 643-8230 or 8231?!?

  4. No accidents or moving violations within 3 years they will probably tell you to come back in 2019 when it's clear. Oh and no pending court/tickets

No i have the paper that says no more than 3 accidents in the years prior or no more than once accident in the last 12 months. What I wanted to know is if that would disqualify you immediately or would they just put your name on hold. My coworker at my current job also took the exam but he had an accident last August, August 31st to be exam, minor fender bender but still there's a police report so I'm asking to see if he should reinstate or just wait until the end of August to reinstate

  5. Had surgery on my hand back in February, broken during attempted carjacking  . I was called on the list already but put on hold to get restrictions removed. I can drive and have been driving but my hand is still in a cast. I've had my restrictions removed and i'm ready to go however when I call to get "reinstated". I don't want the list to expire/ basically miss my opportunity (12xx)

    1. Would I be placed on medical hold?
    2. Would my hand be an issue for the physical test; what does the physical test consist of? Running on a treadmill? Pushups?
    3. I've been reading that there won't be another class until the end of summer, how true is that?
    4. I'm thinking they wouldn't allow me to train with my hand in a cast until the cast is off which I totally understand :( , given a list number of 12xx, how long do I have approx. before the list is potentially exhausted?
    5. During this time, I'm trying to earn my CDL B before I hopefully get called to training, do you think the DMV would allow me to road test with a cast on my arm??

Just trying to make sure I take full advantage of this opportunity after having waited so long. Any thoughts/feedback will be greatly appreciated.

  6. They told you that you had to change your license to a B? That's extremely sick...I would've checked in with some other DMV locations first before doing that...the DMV I went to gave me a Class B CLP. And then after I took my road test, I was, and still am, able to drive both a tractor trailer and/or bus with no restrictions.

For the road test, you need both the license card and the permit card, with your picture on both of them. However, as soon as you get your paper permit, you can go to any driving school and start enrolling in lessons until the permit card comes in the mail from Albany - they say two weeks in the mail, however, sometimes it comes in a week or 8 days.

Cause it's based on his/her preference to have the CDL before going into training. Before the arguments begin, let me just say that there are pros & cons to this, and the biggest "con", in my opinion is that if you qualify on Day 10, and you fail the road test, you're out!!

Thanks for clarifying that it is indeed both cards that I need for the road test, the DMV at Barclays was not even sure about that, they had to call Albany to confirm. SMH. I will go and request a Class B CLP on at the one on Jamaica instead.

Also, I agree, getting the CDL before is a huge plus. I'm socially awkward so I wasn't part of the discussion but when I went to the interview, had a few stories being told of individuals who passed the 10 day training and failed at the DMV. Least having the CDL, you already have half of what you need.

  7. That wasn't the case for me...I originally had a Class A CDL with a Tank & Passenger Endorsement. When I went to the DMV in Jamaica to take the School Bus endorsement test on 6/4/15, it was then that they gave me the Class B CLP (Commercial Learners Permit) with the appropriate restrictions. I took a road test in a bus about two months afterwards, and now I have the Class A with all of the endorsements and a M restriction, respectfully.

Lol wow, this is my exact situation, CDL A with endorsements and the DMV at Barclay was telling me that I have to change my license to a B. I don't have the school bus endorsement though but i do have Passenger on my A, maybe that's why they didn't give me a B CLP? Also, is it that you had the license card and the paper permit for the road test or did you have a license card and a permit card as well? Because I was told that at the road test for the B permit, they don't accept the paper that you receive at the DMV, only the card that comes in the mail.

  8. M restriction just applies to class A license only, cannot transport passengers commercial only, however you have a P endorsement which overrides the M restriction because you took both class A and B in different vehicles when you took road tests, I think this is how it works

I think that's how it works also, however the DMV near Barclays is retarded, even the Supervisors. They told me I have to change from an A to a B in order to get a B permit for the road test even though I have passenger endorsement. Yet on the phone with the DMV, the guy simply states as long as u have the passenger endorsement, u can take the road test. Just sharing the information as I got it

  9. First of all, I'm not here to argue with you, respectively.

However, on my license, since I took a road test in both a tractor trailer and a bus, I have a restriction and I know some bus operators also have a B restriction as well. So neither the B nor the M restrictions are acceptable? (Click here for the full list of endorsements & restrictions.)

I have the paper at home when I get home I'll post it. Its not an argument, I'm simply informing people what I and others experienced as well, there is a guy at the front desk he gives u the paper after seeing your interview letter, he pulls up your record, they have direct access to the DMV information he said, so if i go to the DMV n update my restrictions they will see the change immediately before i even returned with the paper. I did just that, went to the DMV at Barclays came back, got the K restriction removed, told him because I have the N2 ill have to wait for a road test which is far, isn't there any way else? This conversation was specifically for the N2, not the M or the B restrictions, however, maybe he had a rough morning because he then said, "Can't you read? A3 is the only one allowed no exceptions, says it right there on the paper". I then told him even if I road test, I'll get M, he then said, I gave u the paper. Then proceeded to call another number. Maybe it was jus the individual, however the paper has a list of infractions and once you have removed them all u can contact them.

  10. They're not going to say anything about the K restriction. It goes with the A3 restriction, which is fine to get hired. It will only be a problem if he is working out of Staten Island as he would need a medical card to operate the S89.

So I have been busy but let me post and update. The K restriction is in fact a problem as well as any other restrictions. The only restriction allowed and according to the personnel, allowed under scrutiny, is the A3 nothing else. N2 restriction which cannot be removed until road test with DMV in a Bus despite having the passenger endorsement. The only restrictions allowed is the A3, no exceptions I was told.

  11. They're not going to say anything about the K restriction. It goes with the A3 restriction, which is fine to get hired. It will only be a problem if he is working out of Staten Island as he would need a medical card to operate the S89.

Man if they ask me to go staten island provided i make it thru, im moving out there. That commute is ridiculous. I went today. Still here, gonna be a long day. Thanks alot guys, appreciate all the information thus far, extremely helpful.

  12. I have to go into my appointent, it says no restrictions on your license. I've had my CDL but only used it in the state of NY so I have A3 E and K restrictions. As per the DMV website, "The two restrictions together will verify to law enforcement and USDOT representatives that you are not required to have a USDOT Medical Examiner's Certificate and that your operation is limited to New York State only." I don't want to go there and be denied and miss the opportunity because of this.

If its an issue, will I be disqualified or will they just send me to get it done correctly if anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, maybe just my instance but I got the letter Friday evening for a Tuesday Morning Appointment. Make sure you have all your documents nearby and up to date on your prior address and job history because I'm still struggling to remember.

  13. So just to be clear because I am a little slow, you don't have to notify them that you won't be attending the scheduled interview prior to the interview date?

You don't have to call to say that you need a little more time or give them and explanation of some sort perhaps? Nothing at all?

Are you guys sure about that, I'm abit skeptical because I don't want to simply disregard and then be told that I missed the opportunity of a lifetime.

I too, want to reinstate after I complete my CDL (want to be able to take classes prior so that I am familiar rather than wait til 10 day training to focus on getting it all done.

Also, this isn't a guaranteed thing yet, I definitely won't get any time off from my current job to attend the interview far less the 10 day training either, maybe in a month or so maybe. Rather not risk my little job i got now, trying to get a job

  14. Anytime.

If you haven't already, get some lessons.

If you drive a car everyday, start checking your mirrors every 3-5 seconds with two hands on the wheel using push-pull. Make your turns, cross checking your mirrors and for example you are making a right turn be sure to know your pivot points.

Get vision checks everyone! Don't wait until the TA docs tell you that you need glasses before you start driving a bus! If you need glasses for driving start driving with them on! It will take a week or two to get used to. Make sure you get a spare pair or two. Get the cheapest pairs you can get - this isn't a fashion show unless you have the money to spend!

I got a vision test done too, highly recommend it. I dont need it even though sometimes i wonder if i did. Also got the cdl info so would definitely be working on that because i think they're going to be calling real soon. I drive and practice calling out the hazards and checking the mirrors, i personally have an issue with the 3-5 that i have to get over. In my experience it simply isnt enough time, i count it out n by the time i look left for 5 secs then front then 5 secs later right somehow i cant seem to focus on the front. That issue is minimal, the running of the yellow light and if anyone can, explain pivot points in some detail please. Also anyone knows whats the starting salary annually in the first year? Isnt about the money but rather making sure i can pay my current bills or if i need to find a cheaper place to cut costs also being able to compare it with another MTA exam i took to see which position would b best for my family.

    As always, many thanks guys.

  15. Question guys, Do all new hires have to train in Manhattan? Also, driving under the train tracks like in the Bronx, that cannot be easy, would they give you something like that to train on? I know Westchester and Southern Blvd in the Bronx has a depot near there or something. I would hate to have to learn to drive over there, horrible pedestrians, customers and then I be seeing buses driving past tractor trailers under the train tracks tight fit. Kinda trying to mentally prepare myself as well, even though I got time still, I like to have my head in the game way before it actually happens so when I do get the call I am skillfully and mentally prepared

  16. I went to Ferrari driving school and it was on a school bus.

Sadly I didn't qualify on Day 7 smh but none of us qualified which is a bummer. I noticed my mistake early on but by then it's kindof too late to correct it. They want to make sure you don't ever make any mistakes so even if you correct it second go around, it's kindof too late. My biggest issue is leaving too much room on my right. I always think that I'm going going hit a parked car or something so when I turn, I lean moreso to the left which they don't like because they don't want any cars to attempt to pass you on the right. Also when the countdown walk sign hits 5 seconds, I was told its best to just slow down and stop because by the time you hit the intersection, it's already yellow and they NEVER want you crossing when it's yellow lol. I did. Welp lesson learned. I get one more day of practice today and on to qualifying on day 9 smh.

This is like i said, my primary concern, i've seen buses take off side mirrors, guy leaving the car opened the door without watching and the bus took it off. Because some people park their private cars badly, you have less space on the right and sometimes have to cross over into the left lane at short notice to avoid a collision. I read either on this thread or on the previous bus exam thread the same thing also regarding the countdown walk sigh, never get caught in the intersection on yellow or red.

I had the same issue when i was getting my CDL A, i eventually got a grip on the lights thing, i look ahead way before to see if its blinking so i know to slow down ahead of time and that helps however it isn't 100%. Some lights they change to Red in like 5 seconds. I trained in Maspeth, there's a light there doesn't even go to yellow, straight from green to red with a 1-2-3 blink then red, ridiculous shit. However, I still struggle with covering the right with any vehicle, my advice and anyone can correct me on this, I usually stay in the right lane but as far left as possible without stepping on the white line, that helps with a private car but again, because of how some fools park their cars, might be harder with a bus, you might frequently have to step over into the other lane just to avoid those obstacles.

Give yourself 4 feet of clearance on the right at all times..mph on a bus is 15 to 20..turning corners, 3 to 5.. mph..

4 feet damn, think my aforementioned advice might be enough? i Mean that's all the lane there is for the right lane so it should suffice no? Slower is better for me, 3 to 5 on corners seems perfect. Thank you

  17. I feel like the instructors are like that so as to test your resolve, if you can't handle one guy screaming at you even though he might get fired for his conduct like was previously stated, how are you going to handle 30 people cursing you out with nothing to lose? When I did my private lessons my instructor was rude as well, he fell asleep many times which made me think either i'm a decent driver or he doesn't value his life. Most times I tune people out and take the message from the rudeness. Example; Instructor says no you damn idiot, i told you check your mirrors. All my mind hears is "check your mirrors".

Even in my personal vehicle, I been practicing using mirrors more and observing and calling out clearance, pedestrian, vehicular(e.g. double parked cars on the opposite side of the street) and road hazards (potholes/bumps). My main concern with this is covering the right, entering and exiting bus stops I feel like I might clip a few mirrors on the right side. I also notice drivers opening their doors to exit without watching their mirrors and the bus has to swerve to avoid that. Any ideas on whether or not that is a legit concern and any tips?

Lastly, my secondary concerns are top speed and night time driving. How fast is a regular bus supposed to go? I see some flying by and some drivers really take their time. When i was learning, my instructor said I was going too slow n then too fast, because I know slamming on the brakes is a no-no, I was wondering for the 10 days, whats the optimal range for city streets? about 20mph and 5 when pulling into a bus stop?

  18. I'm getting a little more comfortable but the instructor is such a jerk and doesn't know how to talk to us. There's one guy on my bus who already has his CDL and thinks he's a know it all. The instructor keeps ripping him to shreds on purpose lol. He used to drive for Jersey Transit but this is not Jersey, this is MTA. He doesn't get that and I think they probably won't pass him because he's a know it all and argumentative. As far as me.....I'm doing better with my turns, securing the bus and protecting the back. I'm driving in the city so it's not as easy because it's a lot more congested than the other boroughs. I have to remember to call out my hazards, pre trip and Aslaps. They literally want you to call out everything. If you see an ant crossing in the middle of the street, you better call that out or else you're getting yelled at smh.

What are Aslaps? When u say pretrip u mean the indoor n outdoor inspection like tread depth emergency exit secure stuff like that?

  19. couple weeks ago the list was idling at 200, i log in today people in or above the 600s are being called. Im 10xx, i thought maybe by next year summer i'd get called, definitely looks to be sooner than that. Going to do my passenger endorsement tomorrow and then sign up for my roadtest. Good Luck guys, definitely remember, its all about the mirrors.

Side note, a yearly retraining? for how long? Same 10 days? Just curious.

  20. Hi my list number is 19# and I receive my letter in March and I went for the drug test and I was told within 3 to 90 days But I called 2 weeks ago and I spoke to Mrs. chestnuts and She told me in August nothing is going on now they up to #34 not #95.

i forgot the number to call, but i called twice in the last couple of weeks. they definitely up to 95. Idk if my understanding is correct but they are looking at 10xx for this year it seems and of that number, they called 95 so far. Terminology is key in all this i believe, they "technically" called somewhere near "200" applicants for drug testing etc etc, because I know someone in the 1xx region that also got a letter. However, I think people that are actually appointed (which i take to mean appointed in the title i.e passing the 10 training and drug test and have actually started working) is at 95.

Again I could be wrong and if so please correct me but this is my understanding of it. Also, that 10xx number is what i got at the recording when u call, goes something like "blah blah exam 4600 blah blah 1035 something something, 95 appointed" I didn't pay attention much after i didnt hear the numbers in my regions,

  21. Most people fail because they dont scan their mirrors every 3-5 seconds, not calling out hazards, not properly setting up and executing their turns, not observing /watching for supt leaving their hands in closing doors, not dropping the kneeler in bus stops, going thru yellow lights (Yellow /Red) Same AT ZEREGA !!!! Last but not least, not knowing the true meaning or how to get your nose dirty. Bus ops language..

not to nitpick here because i was told the same when i was obtaining my cdl, 3-5 secs on the mirror is a pet peeve for me. I usually follow instructions to the letter so if u say 3-5 ill do 3-5, when i was training for my cdl, 3-5 secs is what i tried doing. 3-5 u are barely focused on the road in front of you. that's 5760 glances at the mirror per 8 hour day. I always say, always check your mirrors frequently.

Just curious how to time those red/yellow? I usually look at the pedestrian crossing sign as a gauge (if its white on the opposite side, I can go thru the intersection safely, if its blinking proceed to slow down in time to stop if necessary) but sometimes that fails as u might slow down to a stop on green n then try to make it thru n it starts changing for yellow to red. Is there any clues or tips?

Get your nose dirty? U mean how to stay out of trouble? (lateness, absences or u meant drug use, stealing kinda stuff?

  22. Finished my line training and was out on my own this week, its a jungle out there!

Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk

Congrats dude, I saw a guy in the Bronx on Randall Ave near the bridge on a training bus. He made that turn so slow i laughed, u can see he wasn't trying to mess up at all. When I pulled up the light had just changed to red as I was approaching, between that time and when it changed back to green, he made the turn as I was pulling off so he wasn't caught in the intersection but only just barely. Must have been going 2mph on that turn. He probably did exactly as instructed as would I but i was happy to know there's still a training class going on

  23. Ive had my cdl for about 2 years now. I went to "red hook on the road". Unemployment program in Brooklyn. I paid $80 and got 10 in class and on the road lessons plus included road exam. They even practice the actual road test with you. Great place. As far examiners go they're easy going ones and difficult ones. I was the second to last one to go out of 8ppl and the block you do parallel parking was a no go due to no parking and no highway driving because it was a lot of traffic. We basically went in a big circle. Lol examiner made me pull up to mc d's so he can grab fries....total truth I swear lol.

No advertising bro. You don't want the advertising police to get you  -_- .

    -First 200 were called

Forgot to mention!! I took a NYC Corrections Officer exam a few weeks ago, I am actually very I interested in taking that job when they call me...the OT in Corrections is ridiculous and I am sorry guys id rather get in on it lol.

question, if by the time they reach my list number (low 3000s) and I am not ready to take the job, is it possible to put my spot on hold and take the job in the future?

Might get bumped but before u do. Read on that, they are about to undergo a major transformation n investigation  .

-The CDL (least for the A) is based on the examiner like every other test. First time I tried it I failed miserably (Maspeth location), 2nd time my instructor told me I can request another examiner if I already took a test with one and I did. I sucked at parallel parking the trailer, not close enough yet she let that slide. Also was too slow on the freeway (bumpy ride in a old rickety truck, i was in the air half the test). I swore i failed, she passed me. Been driving trailers since after that but then, even I woulda failed me and she passed me. Before, I was perfect, guy failed me. Its all based on what examiner u have and his/her mood that day?

(Funny Fact, DMV CDL Examiners aren't required to have a CDL and most of them actually have a Class D license and never drove any of the vehicles class that they examine u on).

Work on the CDL before u get called, costly in some cases (no advertising here) :D , cheaper in others. Better to work on it for months rather than in a space of 10 days. ;)
