  1. What if one of the lines would extend into Staten Island? I am actually very curious to know if the MTA would ever consider having some trains cross over to Staten Island. What does everyone think? Is it possible, or would it be as something you guess would consider a fantasy?

  2. The 62As were on the (5) for OPTO services and occasionally full service if needed. They werent assigned to the (5) to begin with, they were borrowed cars. Once the 142s came in, they weren't needed anymore.

For the last time, there's still gonna be SOME R142As leftover on the (6) once the dust settles since all of them aren't needed for the R188 order...

Okay I will stop nagging. My question about the R142A's has been answered.

  3. R62 on the (5)? *faints*

I'm gonna miss seeing NTTs on the (6). Why can't the MTA split the fleet 50-50 on (6)& (7).

I agree with you 100% even though I am not a (6) train rider. I loved the whole idea with the (4)(5) and (6) having NTT's and now they are being taken away.

  4. Think about it like this originally BEFORE the swap the (6) ran 450 R142A's [10 car sets each ] and Flushing ran 430 sets of R62A's [11 car sets] .Now 380 R142A's from the (6) are being converted into R188s for the (7)  and the (MTA) ordered 123 newly built R188s. In return the (6) is getting 400 R62A's  from the (7). Why not 430 ? 30 R62A's are single cars wich means an extra car was added into each set to make a train of 11 cars instead of 10.Back in 2000 single car 1909 was wrecked at hunts point ave so you can no longer put all single cars into 10 car sets .( correct me anyone if im wrong on that part) The single cars will probably be used for work service or can be placed on other irt lines . Once the swap is done in 2016 the (7) will be 100% R188s and  (6) will run 40 sets of R62A's along with the remaining  6 sets of uncoverted R142A's . The (6) won't fully be NTTs again until the R62A's retire in likely another 10-15 yrs , unless a swap happens in the near future wit the (4) and (6) which most likely won't happen. In case a swap was too happen in the future it would leave (4) being 100% R62A's because the (6) will have enough R62A's to fully cover service on the (4) so the (4) wouldn't need its R142/A's.

Why thank you very much for your answer. This is the kind of answer I was looking and very gladly appreciate you explaining it, thanks!

I am not sure what NTT stands for and what it does. I will assume it has to due with the type of trains that run on it.

  5. It will be years before that happens....

It would be around 2016 when the R62As take over.

Really? I thought it would be soon. So once all the R188's are on the (7), the left overs of R142A's will stay on the (6) and along with R62's?

When will the (6) have its new subway cars again? I am now looking forward to that,

  6. That doesn't matter.

The whole point is that the IRT Flushing Line has the oldest signaling system that's gonna need replacing anyway. The rest of the signaling system on the A Division are not up for replacement yet.

How do you think the (7) line will run after the project will run? Just curious.

  7. What Rollover said. It doesn't matter if you think the R142As are so much better than the R62As, and neither does ridership.

Yeah I read it the first time. I don't need someone else telling me what someone else had already told me. I simply just wanted to know what was going on.

  8. There will still be a minority fleet of R142As on the (6) - they just won't be as common anymore. They're not doing this just to spite you, the (7) needs them more, given that the Flushing line's signalling system is ancient - they figured they might as well use this opportunity to introduce CBTC, and the older cars aren't compatible with such a system. Hence the R188s.

That makes sense I guess But between the (6) and the (7), which of these two line get more busy?

The (6) will still have R142As, as pointed out several times in this thread. It will have 60 R142As and will likely act like the remaining R42s in ENY.

It makes sense. I really love those trains. I think they are so much better than those older trains.

  9. Simply put, no.

The R188 is literally an R142A with a CBTC kit in it, so the logic was that its cheaper to convert the R142As (and order a few brand new cars themselves), than to just go all out and order more cars entirely. Once it becomes an R188, the odds of it going anywhere other than the (7) is nil

Man that is terrible! No more (6)<6> running with R142A's. All (7) fault.

  10. Okay, but it just looks like it now. But how rare will the R142As be on the (6)?

Exactly my question. That was what I was trying to ask. I do understand that the (7) is undergoing a project with CBTC. Although I wanted to know if the (6) will get their R142A's after all of this is done and the (7) has all their trains running the tracks with R188's.

I apologize for the lack of knowledge everyone. Just not really a fan of the MTA releasing newer subway cars such as the R142A and R160, R143 when lines like the (6) are returning to their previous state with the R62's. But hey, if it makes the subways run a lot faster and smoother then by all means!

  11. They will - but by the time that happens, the current NTTs (R142s and R143s in particular) will be outdated. There's thousands of subway cars in the fleet and you can't expect them to all be replaced by NTTs in one fell swoop, especially if they had not yet run out of useful life. It's a process that will last many years and the rolling stock will evolve, like how the R32s were more advanced than the R14s, the R62s more so than the R33s, etc.

If that is the case, what is the plan after the project of the R142A's conversions are over?

  12. Yes the (6) will have both, but the R142As will become the minority of the fleet. They are still in the process of converting them, 7211-7590 well become R188s. They are still in the early stages (most of the 7200s are done already). Once converted, is highly unlikely they will run anywhere but on the (7).

Lets bring it back a little old school. I do not remember exactly what year the R142A's came out for the 6 lines. But my question is, what was the reason that the old 6 trains got replaced for the R142A's? Now from what I am reading by several posts, people are stating that the current R142A's from the 6 line are being converted because the 7 line is undergoing track improvements or what ever the situation is.

I am just curious if whether the 6 line will ever get their subway cars back.

  13. R62A: (6)(7)

    R142: (2)(4)(5)

    R142A: (4)(6)

    R188: (7)

Long story short, the majority of the R142As on the (6) are being upgraded and converted into R188s and (along with factory built new R188 cars themselves) are going to the (7) for CBTC purposes (like the (L) is now). At the same time, the R62As on the (7) are being shifted to the (6). There will still be some R142As leftover on the (6), the ones on the (4) are going nowhere. The R142s are not being touched at all and have nothing to do with the R62A/R188 swap.

So then does that mean that the 6 will have R142A's and R62's? How much longer till they convert all the R142A's into R188's? And last, will they ever fully restore the 6 lines R142A's again?

  14. So with all of that being said from everyone, does anyone have a slight idea if the R142's will ever go back to the 4 and 6 lines? I know nobody cares but it is a little sad to see the R62's go back to the 4 and 6 lines. I got so comfortable seeing the 4,5, and 6 lines with the R142's and now they are leaving those lines little by little just for the 7 line to catch up. This stinks! To think the Subway would have nothing but newer high tech subway cars one day. My hopes have gone away, boo hoo!

But what is the current news lately? Fill me in people! I just got back to New York City after 2 years and I really want to know what has changed with the subway! Please anyone! I have always loved the subway and still do to this day! But so many things are going on and I do not know where to begin to catch up.
