So you passed the signal test and they passed on you? That’s crazy
In my case I passed the cognitive at the recruitment event but was passed over for the signals and definitions overview.

Sorry to hear that man did they say why?
Hey, and thanks! The reason was, "we have determined that our needs can best be met with another candidate." Other than that I guess I didn't sell myself as well on the "exploratory interview" part but who really knows.

Well, I got the "Dear Candidate, thank you for taking the time...." email that usually isn't even worth reading past that sentence if the word "congratulations " or some such isn't in there. At least I didn't have to wait months longer for it but this really hurts man, my last actual chance was in literally in 2008, don't know if I can wait another whole year at this point since I'm not getting any younger at over age 50.
Congratulations though to those who are going into the next steps, the rewards are well worth the hard work once you get that Class I certification 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

The “older version” you’re referring to is actually the desktop version of the portal and the “newer version” is the mobile version of the portal which shows less information. Which is why it shows “submitted” for all positions. If you access the portal through your desktop you’ll be able to see a more in-depth status of your application. I’ve gotten the same versions on my phone as well. Usually it redirects me to the mobile version.
I also finally received a status update on my application. Turns out since I’m an internal candidate my records are taking a bit longer to come over from my agency. I’m not LIRR staff so process is a bit longer. Hoping I can make it to Sunday still 😭
Oh ok, I was wondering why I would a different version sometimes lol. And I'm sure you'll make it to Sunday lol 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

If they didn’t care about the initial interview, they wouldn’t waste the time running them. Especially for conductor, pen and paper can assess logical reasoning and arithmetic speed but it can’t assess customer service skills which leaves it up to the subjective opinion of the interviewer.
Now much weight they give it, who knows?
My portal status says passed and passed prescreening. But I know how little that means. Maybe an email prod wouldn’t hurt.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason on when they send out the emails. Hopefully your S & D invite will be coming soon as well. I'm still waiting on my email that says I didn't pass....IF they even bother with that.

Having applied to dozens of positions, those status’ really have no meaning. I’ve had a lot of them say passed prescreening and never hear anything. I’ve also heard responses for ones that just say submitted. Only one I guess that’s accurate is position filled or anything negative so you don’t have to worry about hearing back anymore lol. And as for mine, it just says submitted for loco engineer and I had the open house in September and passed everything.
Yeah, I've got dozens of applications in mine.too. I actually have been applying for the Locomotive Engineer Trainee position for about 13 years, and the November 16th Recruitment Event was the furthest I've gotten...still haven't received an "official" email about my failure yet though. If I hadn't seen the old website version of my careers account I'd still be hoping for an invite to the S & D Overview and wondering what's taking so long. Wish I could find out how I screwed up the exploratory interview but that's never gonna happen. At least you passed everything though, and hopefully you'll be getting your invite soon 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Yeah I know but I attended the open house passed cognitive and interviewed. Am I looking in the wrong section to see if it says passed like some others were talking about
Believe it or not it depends on which version of the site you get when you sign in. In the one newer version, all of my applications only say submitted with no other status updates. In the other(older) version, it shows application status beyond just applied or submitted. It also shows passed prescreening, job filled, etc, and whether or not you pass an interview. It seems to be random whichever one shows up after I sign in.

I wouldn’t think so. These are all different crafts. But for block operator, station master, yardmaster are all part of transportation department. Maybe you have to wait the year. I would think if they popped your name in the system it would show what you applied for. But for a fact I do know let’s say you make it into the program and fail out during any portion. You’re black listed from ANY transportation nationwide. This is what I was told from training.
Ok, got it thanks Bro' 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

When I go on my Mta portal my status says submitted anyone know what this means?
It means that they received your application. There should have been a corresponding email sent to you as well.

I have a question for anyone that could answer. If you failed the interview like I did, are you really frozen out from any other positions? I applied for Block Operator in March, and concerned that I'm messed over for that one too even though they haven't invited me to anything yet for that.

Well, I got called back for S&D. Not gonna be a fun one, but I think I could do it. But I wonder, how many people are typically knocked out after passing cognitive but before SD?
I'm one of them.... didn't get an email or a call, but I happened to sign in to my MTA Careers account yesterday, and at my application it said, "Failed - Position Filled". I was at the recruitment event on the 17th.

During the program you have to maintain above a 75% average. This is factored all the way from the day one cognitive exam. I don’t agree with the system. But sometimes it doesn’t translate out in the field. They’re lucky if they can graduate a class of 7-8 engrs out of 12. Sometimes people see the amount of work we have to study and get discourageda dh walk out and don’t show up for the S&D and sometimes they drop in phase1. If you can maintain and keep up the studying. Great. I feel for those who don’t get call backs. It shows you guys want the job. I applied 3 years in a row. Never got a call back until the 3rd year applying. Don’t get discouraged. Apply to anything in the MTA career section.
Yes true....I'm a bit discouraged but NOT giving up overall. However I was told by my interviewer that there was a "great need" for people in engine service, it was encouraging that I could have a shot once I heard that at the time. Hopefully I'll have what they're looking for in a year though 👍🏾

Yes, but the main issue with this is you have to score a specific target score they’re looking for, passing it isn’t enough. Hopefully Amtrak and Metro North don’t this either.
Yeah, hopefully not because I've applied to them as well.

I really think they should give all the engineers and conductors who passed cognitive regardless of the score a chance to take the S&D. Cognitive scores do not determine if people will fail SD or not.
I Agree, and not just because I got passed up. It's just the way they do things there, and it means waiting a year to MAYBE get invited back to try again. New Jersey Transit uses a Psychometric Verbal Reasoning exam to filter out applicants for engine service if you're invited to take it. And just like LIRR, you fail it you have to wait a year to reapply there too.

Congrats everyone! Hopefully I’m still in the running. Crossing my fingers for a email Monday.
Hopefully so Bro'! I just found out by signing into my MTA Careers account that they passed on me. I didn't get any letters or emails yet but in the system is says "failed - position filled". Gotta wait a whole year to try again now but hopefully you and the others will move forward 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Yes, absolutely keep applying! I applied a lot longer than 10 years before I finally got invited to an overview. Just keep watching the MTA employment site and this forum and apply each time they post the position.
Thanks for the encouragement! This gives me even more hope that I'll eventually get my "Golden Ticket"....and I'm pulling for all y'all to reach the finish line, in the meantime congrats!

When I got hired in 2015. They banned nepotism. It was lifted 2016. There’s a few guys who just qualified that they’re relatives are here on the property.
Oh, ok...Got It! But if I may ask, is there any backround that you've seen they prefer as far as who they invite? I've been hired by the Postal Service as a Mail Handler but that may not necessarily "wow" them...

I applied as soon as I became qualified in 2012; and to hear the current employees tell it, they can't get their kids in for blood nor money.
Whoa!....so if you're TOO closely related to someone in a craft you're screwed!?

Congrats to All who are moving along in the process:-)! I've been trying literally for about 10 years to make the orientation, but reading these posts gives me hope that I'll eventually get invited too so I'm gonna keep applying! Again, congrats and hope that you all make it to the end:-)

LIRR locomotive Engineer Trainee job
in Transit Employment

I'm not sure how to gauge where I'm at in the application process, as my status has been listed as "applied" for over a year now. I understand not to take but too much stock in status updates but in the past I at least got "passed prescreening", still hoping for the best but I guess I'll eventually see.
