Like can I get stationed close to NJ like Manhattan or Brooklyn or chose what shifts I can do? I use to live in the Bronx but now jersey,I know my commute will be insanely hard since I have to deal with NJ transit and they don't run 24hrs a day and sometimes buses don't even show up.

Where in NJ?  I'm in the same boat as you, close to the city right over the Hudson in WNY, NJ.    I have to report for my OPA on the 17th after waiting 8 years so I've got a lot of thinking to do.  If I was single with no kids I wouldn't think twice about it.

As far as accommodations I highly doubt it.  The MTA is very punctual when it comes to time since the entire system revolves around it.

I was only a conductor for a year and some change before I went to t/o but the schedules for me worked out fine they handed us a wish list on the tour and days off we wanted(which is just a wish list) but I picked PMs with weekdays off and got weekends and then got changed to Friday and Saturday off. So far I'm feeling great as a t/o I got to pick within the first year and a half a job which is sometimes unheard of as a t/o since we move up slower than c/rs do.

In the beginning before you pick you'll have to real with the crew office assigning you jobs until you either pick or a job or win something off the bid sheets. The crew office can change your tour and days off on a week to week basis. While speaking of both titles they didn't mess with me much and kept my tours and days off the same week by week.

This job is great to be honest with you but it all depends if your drive to crawl before you walk is strong. It starts off annoying and hard but as time goes on it gets better year by year. I've been with transit for 4 years total so far and yes I've complained before but at the end of the day the job helped me afford by 1st apartment alone back in 2021 and my own first car back in 2022.

That's basically my plan once I get my foot in the door (move up from c/r to t/o).  Thank you for the insight.

Good afternoon everyone if anybody has questions in regards to this exam I might be able to help a few, I was hired off this exam back in 2019 and got promoted off exam 7604 to train operator. Have almost 4 years here not much but I might be able to answer questions people might have.

How crazy was it for you schedule wise for the first year or two?  And how are you feeling so far?  Stressful?  Enjoy it?  Did you get to pick a location based on where you live in the beginning or do you have to go to the yard they send you to?    Thanks.

  4. I just got called for OPA on the 17th, all this time I thought this list was dead.  Now I don't know what to do, part of me doesn't want to miss this opportunity but I'm also in a point of my life where I have a set schedule and a family.  My list number is 94XX.  Anyone in a similar situation?  How do you manage family time/work balance?

In all fairness, this is the top of the list.

Everyone wants this job. I guarantee you all but 2 or 3 out of 40 will graduate.

This isn't like the train operators where it is a 50% rate.

The waiting list for the previous exam #8094 given in 2008 expired this past February.  I’m fully aware of the wait, not sure what you’re trying to imply here.

Just to clarify, this DOES NOT MEAN July is not the last class. It is possible it is, possible it isn't. Again, just nothing is officially set in stone.

That makes more sense.  Perhaps they want to slow down and play catch up, since so many people already took the OPA and even the PE.  Makes no sense to continue to send out PE a noticed until some classes from this year graduate.  Remember not everyone that goes to school car will actually graduate.

I guess I'm having a more respectable view on it as I'm technically working for the city (no advancement though) and unionized. There's no way I can just walk out if MTA (or anyone offering higher) calls me on a better position.

Back to main topic, does OPA results typically take as long as the regular test?

If I were unionized I wouldn’t jump either.  For a lot of us that’s a big reason for wanting to get into the MTA.  It’s not the greatest job in the world, in fact it’s quite the opposite.

As as far as OPA results, they don’t take as long as what it took for us to get our official test results and list #.  For those that started school car last month, I believe many of them took the OPA back in November.

Received my letter to take the OPA this past Friday, going in to take it on May 2nd at 1:15 and my list # is 33xx. When I emailed the exams unit on April 9th asking when I might be asked to take the OPA, they said within the next few months and I’ll be going in less than a month after emailing them so maybe that’s a good sign for anyone on the list who is not too far behind me. I wonder how long after until I get called for pre employment 🤔. That’s assuming I pass the OPA lol. Good luck to everyone else in this process

You’re the second person to confirm OPA notices for the 3K range.   Awesome man.  Good luck.  9K range OPA notices I’m thinking perhaps by the end of the year.

    They go by ssn?

I think so.  Being that so many people took the test and lots of us share the same score, they needed some way to organize the list # order besides our names, so they’re using the 5th digit of your SS# for your spot.

I checked for my name in the City spreadsheet and there’s like 8 other people with the same first and last name as me.  lol.

Hey guys, I'm listed #34xx and I just received my OPA letter today. Just wanted to ask a few things, is the OPA like an interview type of test or is it like the memorization type of test for the NYPD. There's no initial dress code for this assessment as well right?

All questions aside, I'll probably take a shot at this after my shift at work.

They’re in the 3K range for OPA notice already?   Awesome.  This list is moving quicker than I thought.  I’m in the 95XX range and I was thinking at least another 1 1/2 - 2 years before I even receive a notice.

No dress code for OPA but don’t dress like a bum either lol    I believe the OPA is memorization and second part they present you with images and you have to respond to their questions about it accordingly   You’re also recorded for your responses    I believe this is more to gauge how well and clearly you speak   Good luck man and congrats

Want to ask for some personal advice: Was recently offered a promotion at my job (currently at $19.50 at my position, promotion would put me at $22). My list number for this exam is low 700's. I would take the conductor job all day over my current job (I do love my job though). Should I turn down the position and wait it out?  Would hate to turn down the promotion and never get called from the conductor job (is that possible?). Feels like a good problem to have, but still feel stuck and would like some professional advice.

Take the promo and when MTA calls, split from your current job.  I understand it looks a bit unprofessional but this affects you not them.  MTA is a guaranteed unionized job with pension.  To put it into perspective, I gave 10 years of my life to a company that in the end filed for bankruptcy and threw me to the side (along with most of the company) when all was said and done.

Also on a a side note, you will not be able to have your current job and also take school car training.   School car training lasts 6 months I believe and it’s an all day thing (sometimes nights as well).  Hope that helps.

Local 6 here. My starting pay was about $26 per hr. Doormen about the same. They max out at $35.50 i think this july.

Not much tips but holiday time they get $11-$15k bonus from residents. Also some ot and most work holidays to get that extra 9 days paid. Brings up 90k-$110k most some more.

Why you leaving?? That's a good gig.

Dude where can I look into this?  My father in law was a doorman for years.  Recently retired with a pension but I hear it’s incredibly hard to get into.  If you do it’s via relative or good friend.

most likely anyone whos in 27,000 or higher wont get called and i wont have a chance

While that could be the case, I would remain optimistic.   Continue to live your life and apply to other city positions within the MTA. In contrast, the last conductor test # 8094 just expired this past February.  Mind you that exam was given back in 2008 which a few of my friends took.  One already moved up from conductor to TO by 2012.

Hey everyone I have been following this forum for a while and I just have a few questions

I took the train conductor 6601 my score was 93 and my list number in the 7###

Do you think theres a possibility I would get called?? if so do you know the time frame??

    Thank you

Probably in another 1 1/2 years.   I got 92.5 and my # is 95XX so I’m looking at 1 1/2 - 2 years.     But who knows, it could be sooner. Many people may drop out for a number of reasons, (drug, medical, another job/no longer interested). So it could move slower or faster depending on their needs at the time.

Yea passed it too. I go to 85% at my job in July to $30.50 or so and we're fighting for $32.00

Now if i get hired 2020 im at 100pct pay then prob about $38 then with ot kicking in after 35hrs. Im on pace for making $93k this yr. Not including my bump in July. Gonna be hard to leave that. Same pace in 2020 would easily be over $120k. Just pension is 1,200 per mo and mta much more. I get free lunches at work and some comp nights at hotels worldwide. Just that pension that has me interested.

Yeah that’s tough.  But you’re right, the only difference is the pension.  But you’re also 2 1/2 years from potentially making 6 digits, which is nowhere near MTA.

That’s not true, because They did the same to me, and I know for a absolute fact that I was 100% clean. They just never reached our list number for the medical portion. And I only know that because I know people in the union.

Was that for the 8094 test?  Or a different one?  That’s horrible man.

  17. 3 hours ago, TrueBlu said:

If I was dirty do you think I would of did a drug test and if I was dirty I would of received a disqualification letter...let us not be silly here smh n lmao #really

Well then if that’s the case that’s fukn horrible.  Why even bother putting people though all that?   I apologize man, I would be heated too.

  18. 2 hours ago, TrueBlu said:

    BS=Bullshit

And it entailed me going for preemployment and taking 2 drug test to never get called for medical. Ugh so frustrating how they wasted my time along with several others...so all I’m saying is don’t count your lucky stars until you have completed medical and they have given you a start date. Mofo MTA 👎🏾 Lol

The fact that you took 2 different drug tests and they never called you back on either for the medical portion only tells me that you came back dirty.   No reason to be upset with the MTA over that if that’s the case.  I can’t think of any other reason they would do that to you.

  19. It appears notices are going out.   Received my list # in the 9XXX with a 92.5 score.  Althoufh I already checked via the link provided (thank you to whoever posted that).   From the looks of it a lot of people passed.   I’m counting on it to be years before I ever get called.   IF i ever end up getting called.   Oh well.   Good luck to the rest of u guys.

  20. Guys, please, PLEASE be patient.  Just because you didn’t receive your OPA letter and you have 3 wrong doesn’t mean the world is going to end and you have to freak out.  So far we’re all going on information based on the responses posted by those who already took it which are on this very thread. Not official word posted on the MTA website or notice, by word of mouth. Patience is virtue.  30K people took this test.  Top 2200 are getting notices sent from now until the end of the year based on what another member posted.  Again, we’re going based on word of mouth and nothing official from the MTA.  Hell, the official list isn’t even established yet.  I understand people are lookin for answers but it gets quite annoying when people keep asking the same questions over and over again.   I would also expect many people to be anxious if an official list had already been sent out, but that’s not the case.  Read the thread, get an idea of your score and where you’re at on the list and WAIT.  The lucky ones who already took the test are reporting that it may be months still until they actually start, after background check, official list and everything else involved in the hiring process.  If you can’t wait a few weeks for your notice I’m pretty sure you’ll jump out the window if you have to wait a year.   Have some damn patience, this anxiety isn’t going to help when it’s your turn to take your OPA and you end up screwing yourselve over.   I have a 92.XX with six wrong.  I’m not expecting anything from the MTA until well into next year.  If I was anxious for a response I would have slit my throat by now.  The world continues, keep grinding, apply for other positions in the MTA while you wait in order to get your foot in the door.  Stick around with you POS job that u might not like or find something better until your time comes.  What I’m trying to say is to not put all your eggs in one basket and be patient   If you got a good score your time will come   Make sure your address is always updated with the MTA.

    /end of rant.

Honestly it’s just always been a goal of mines to work for the agency. I’ve always just wanted to wear that badge with the logo on my arm since young  especially be a T/O. I have plenty of family who work there as well and before my grand pass I promise i would stick to it and make it in so i like to keep at least those promises.

Just for that I hope you make it in man.  If all goes well for me perhaps we’ll meet on the other side when this is all over.  (Underground not afterlife, relax lol).   Good luck.

I have a few friends that work for the MTA as well.  In fact it was a good friend that pushed me to take the test.   He started as conductor as well and within two years got promoted to T/O.  Which is way easier than taking the T/O competitive from scratch.
