If you have a pair of shoes that meet the requirements, just use those for your time in class. The only requirement is that the shoe has a "defined heel" which isn't bigger than 1 inch, and I believe the eyelets need to be metal. For when you're working the trains, in addition to that, the shoe needs to be black and needs to be made of leather which can be polished. You do NOT need steel/composite toe and you do NOT need boots. I went through a bunch of pairs of shoes that killed my feet before I finally spent some real money and got a pair of Red Wings. Totally worth it.  http://www.redwingshoes.com/red-wing-shoe/133-red-wing-shoes/133-red-wing-mens-oxford-black

Thanks for clearing that up. I have boots that’ll work for class so I can hold off a few more months before I have to purchase new ones.

wear something comfortable. you will do the things jh said. not sure about safety shoes though. its been a while for me.

Speaking of safety shoes, should I bother purchasing new black safety shoes/boots before class begins or should I stick with my current work boots until (God willing)  it’s actually time to start working trains?

Drug test strict how ? Is it only a urine test ?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. Yes, it’s only a urine test but they’re strict about the procedure. They make you certify that your specimen container kit hasn’t  been tampered with, you have to wash your hands before you can even touch it and you have to initial your specimen when it’s all done acknowledging kind of that you witnessed your urine’s chain of command.

  4. I went for my medical.  There was a physical fitness portion which consisted of climbing up and down a latter a few times, stepping over a third rail and walking down a little section of track, pulling a weight 3 times with each arm and bending a hose(I think maybe a portion of train brake hose) 3 times with each hand. That part took less than 10 minutes. There was also about 4-5 pages of paper work to fill out, an eye exam, a hearing test, ekg, blood pressure, etc..... The drug test was very strict, I’m sure that’s the norm but I’ve never had to take one before. I was out of there in a little under 2 hours.

Towards the end of your time together in class, you have a day where you meet the head guys from the union. They have you pick envelopes out of a hat, and inside that envelope is your new roster number.  So, basically, it’s random.

That’s a fair system. Thanks for the info.

  8. I received an email from Linda Oliver today asking if I was still intrested in moving forward with the AC position. She said there’s no definite dates set for the next class yet but probably January/February. She’s going to send the Sterling link so I can start the background check. Here we go!!!

I have 8 definitions that I need to clean up a little but otherwise I know it pretty good.

You have plenty of time. Just spend the next few days going strong and cleaning everything up. It’s not an easy exam by any means but it’s doable for anyone who puts in the time. I took the test back in May...... 36 people showed, 14 walked out, 10 failed and 12 of us passed. Go hard and you’ll be there at the end. Good luck to everyone on Monday!!

So they ask you all 73 definitions and all signals on the exam?

No. They ask you 25 definitions and 25 signal names and indications.  Chances are you’re not going to pass if you don’t know the entire study packet cold by test time though. If you know them cold it doesn’t matter if they ask you for  25 S&D’s or all 200.

I would stress too much. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think they contact us until they have a class lined up for us. I passed the S&D exam in May and I’m still waiting to hear back. The waiting is the hardest part so hang in there. We’ll all probably be in next years classes.

I meant WOULDN’T stress too much. Sorry for the typo.

I took mine on the 16th of July, still nothing from anyone, from what you’re saying you were contacted for a class around that 2 month range initially, kind of gives me anxiety as it’s been over 2 months and no contact yet, who knows what the process is

Hey, I passed the S&D test in July and still haven’t heard anything yet. Just wondering if any one that passed in July received any news about a sept class?

Hang in there, it’s a brutal wait. I passed the S&D exam in May with Mlad and still haven’t heard anything either. There’s been no communication about the background check, class or anything else since passing the exam. Try to keep the S&D’s somewhat fresh in your head and just go about your life as if your not waiting for anything (I know it’s easier said then done).

No , you can be put in the August class in a weeks span.

Ok, great. Thank you, that’s reassuring to know. My thought process is they’ll start putting together the August class now that the June class has started.
