Hello everyone! Does anyone have good recommendations for backpacks or anything that is smaller but just as durable and fits what is needed like the Kaka bag?! It served its purpose for school car but now since I’m starting road ops I want something smaller and not so chunky. TIA

I have downsized my bag atleast  3 times since I started last year.
I’ve settled an a 10L Fanny pack from Nike because of its comfort and ability to hold all I need. That beings said….

I’ve seen many use this bag and fit all they need in it.

Before someone posts about how “nobody wants to work anymore” - people quit simply because the schedule is not compatible with their life. Some people prefer a better work-life balance which, let’s be honest, this job sucks for. It doesn’t help that the TA really does treat you like a number when it comes to discipline and scheduling. It’s an easy job, but the authority makes it more stressful than it needs to be honestly. The crew office is known to be petty, so it also affects overall employee retention during the early stages of XX. If you go into it expecting to get sent far every assignment, you’ll either get what you expected or you’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’ll suck for the first year or two, but once you pick your first job, it’ll feel so much more easy. I didn’t believe it when I was XX, but it really does get better.

Lack of sleep can be a problem, but remember that our job is safety sensitive, so if you are tired or don’t have enough rest; you have the option of calling the crew office and requesting another/later assignment due to insufficient rest.
Remember that XX employees are entitled to 12 hrs between shifts, use this info at your discretion to ensure you’re well rested and alert for your shift. (Don’t call the crew office and cite insufficient rest simply because you went out partying the night before or you chose not to rest for whatever reason, this is more for when they assign you a job without enough time in between shifts.)

I’m rooting for y’all, good luck out there, do your best. If the job isn’t for you or the XX schedule is too much to handle, there’s no shame in admitting that. This isn’t the only job in the world, nor is it the best for everyone.

I agree ☝🏽 100%, job is not for everyone and not because some ppl are not made for it but because everyone’s priorities are different. If it ain’t for you, it I ain’t for you. XX life will definitely test your patience and endurance but truthfully your mindset can make it tolerable. I use to get upset all the time, at times I wanted to quit, it’s come to the point where I no longer focus on the negative I just roll with it. You will interact with some extremely miserable people don’t let their negativity rub off on you. They can be miserable on their own. You will also meet some extremely helpful and joyous people, speaking and interacting with them definitely helps have a good time at work. Focus on doing your job correctly and being confident in doing things right and you shouldn’t have much trouble.  I will also say this, this job may have paid well in comparison to other jobs but the gap is closing quickly and it’s not as lucrative as it once was especially with the way things are going now. I do think there needs to be more pay for Train operators and Conductors. This job is way too dangerous for the pennies they toss at us, and I think it’s crazy how people practically live in transit to make extra money. My time is worth way more than than they r paying. Plus I think it’s crazy how Conductors have to wait 5 years for top pay. I don’t blame them for quitting. You can get a comfortable job at a chain store for similar pay. & When a taxi ride one way costs you more than two hours of work that’s a problem. Things are not the same as they use to be, and I just recently heard that the pay for OPTO hasn’t gone up in many years and Union doesn’t want to touch that topic for fear they might push for OPTO all around and get rid of conductors. I mean there’s a lot to be said so I can’t knock folks for taking a stand and not staying. More power to you!

I heard this as well, but have never seen it in writing. Obviously you don’t want to look crazy out here trying to get a promotion and you’re never at work for your regular assignment, but I know more than 5 T/O’s (2 from this exam and 3 from that last one) that did not have half their sick days and they got promoted. Now I also heard of T/Os getting turned down for dispatcher because of this, but honestly it’s on a case by case basis. Transit does what transit wants to do. Everyone knows the crew office has their ways down here, but for everyone in school car, that has nothing to do with you right now. Focus on them exams and getting use to operating. You don’t need to worry yourselves with more unnecessary stress. There was a jump in our seniority by 500+! People are still being promoted/retiring. When it’s time to pick sorry about that stuff then. Check out the vacancy bid. It’s so many ways around this place, that you don’t get turned into one of these zombies always speaking negative about the job, but STILL HERE! And that’s no shot at anyone here I’m talking bout the 20 year folks

So true you hear blather number  of  ppl complaining and they been on the job 20+ yrs. I’ve concluded they are just complainers. You really have to make the best of the cards your dealt. Work the system and you’ll be alright it really isn’t that horrible of job. Gets stressful here and there but what job doesnt.

How long will this temp bid last for? After it ends can you rebid or will the crew decide your fate?

The bid is for the pick and it’s over when the pick finishes or the person whose job it was resumes. If person resumes ur behind is fresh meat for the crew office.

Crew office decided to say f**k everybody that's XX. My B division classmates have suddenly started seeing reporting locations they never saw in their first 8 months out. All of a sudden it's like the screw office just stopped caring about being fair. MTA shoots itself in the foot because it wears new people out so bad that it leaves them thinking about quitting all the time. I have friends in the A that have been xx for 3 years and all of a sudden they are being treated worse now than ever before.

Then they wonder why they have staffing issues smh.

I was told there are new people at the CAS. Are you still xx? Last pick was my first time out after school car and was pms with ss as RDO’s. Was a pretty sweet schedule and I was barely on board. I think maybe 5-7 days total on board whole pick. Went AMS this pick has been a pain honestly. I’m board almost every other day. It’s so annoying.

The seniority numbers were just updated. So yours should have been updated as well

If there is still an issue you can call a few numbers.

    Pick office number for T/O (718) 694-4292.

You can also contact a union rep. Try anyone on the TO list but Danny Hay. He's retiring. Zach is also out in Las Vegas for a union convention.

Thanks, my seniority number was updated like everyone else’s but now I’m further down in the list when I should have been more senior than others according to previous seniority number and list number. Something just doesn’t seem right.

IronBravo will be the senior most T/O of the next class barring anyone else who had deferred or was on medical hold as well. However, the people in the August class will be senior to him.

It doesn't matter when you are sworn in. Your list number dictates your seniority.

Who do you talk to about when it comes to your seniority number? I should be more senior than some in my class since my list number comes before there’s.

Quick question guys is a western union money order ok? Or does it have to be a postal one?

Please only do postal I had trouble getting one and they were nice enough to let me go and get one from the local post office. Due to COVID there were no lines and it was a quick process, but save yourself the headache and try to get only postal money order before you go.

Do u happen to know what the class breakdown is? How many A division and how many B?

They gave us the option to choose. They had 16 A division openings and 24 in the B division. For the most part everyone got what they wanted. Our class mostly wanted B division.

  10. All I kept hearing from different TSS' and the union during the first week is how short they are and how glad they are that they are hiring more Train Operators. The 5/31 induction class seemed to be the first somewhat big class they had seen in a while. So some of you should be getting called soon I hope.

  11. Anyone know the number for 180 Livingston? I need to call about the transfer of my annual time over from another city agency. NYC H+H is giving me a headache, they can’t tell me whether I am being paid a lump sum or if I am going to be paid no weekly since I’m going to transit. I need to call MTA for clarification. Anyone have the number? I can get through to mrs Vargas which is the only number I have.

  12. Hey guys I  have question…  I gave my resignation notice to my HR department. They informed me I would be on payroll until I exhausted all my accrued leave. When they saw I was leaving for another city agency they said it’s possible my accrued leave will transfer over with me. Is that true? I work with NYC health and hospitals. I was actually hoping to stay on payroll for my health insurance. I know this one in MTA won’t kick in for 90 days.
