  1. Well, it's that time again.

     

    Here are the ridership results for 2023.

    Basically the same thing from last year.

    Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and most of Staten Island went up in ridership.

    All Express bus routes went up in ridership as well.

    Only a handful of routes in the Bronx went up in ridership. At this point, I'm not viewing the Bronx Local/Limited/SBS routes as a gain or loss in ridership and just viewing them as how many more passengers are paying the fare and how many people have stopped. It's basically what it is and has been for a very long while.

     

    The only exceptions are the following routes:

    The Q70-SBS (LaGuardia Airport Link) went fare-free permanently last year.

    The Bx18A/B, M116, B60, Q4 Local/Limited, and S46 Local/S96 Limited are part of the fare-free pilot program, so their numbers were affected.

    Yes, it was. The B57 operated out of Fresh Pond Depot until January 2008 when Grand Avenue Depot officially opened, along with original FP routes B13, B24, B39, and Q59.

    The B48 was also an original FP route, but went to GA two months prior (November 2007) to the opening as a “soft launch”.

    The B38 LCL/LTD was also an original FP route as well, but did not go to GA until the 2010’s. The Metropolitan Avenue portion (B38 LCL) went in 2011 and the Seneca Avenue portion (B38 LTD) went in 2019.

    When the Seneca Avenue portion of the B38 (as well as the Q58 LCL/LTD) was transferred to GA, the B13, B48, B57 and B60 was sent to FP in its place. When the Q58 LCL/LTD went back to FP a year later, they sent back the B48, B57, and B60 to GA and kept the B13 at FP.

    Service has been restored on Amtrak’s Empire Line as of Thursday, November 16. There will be some delays up until Saturday until both tracks are restored.

    Amtrak Service Temporarily Suspended between New York City and Croton-Harmon

    November 13, 2023 5:00 PM


    Due to safety concerns stemming from structure issues of a non-Amtrak, privately owned building above the Empire Line tracks in New York City, Amtrak service is suspended between Croton-Harmon (CRT) and New York City (NYP). Passengers can travel on Metro North trains from Grand Central Terminal between NYP and CRT, where tickets will be cross-honored.

    Additional schedule modifications include:
    • Trains 233, 234, 235, 237, 240, 241, 244 and 280 are canceled
    • Trains 49 and 69 will originate from Albany (ALB)
    • Train 280 will only travel between Niagara Falls and ALB
    • Trains 63, 64, 232, 236, 238, 239, 243, 281, 283, 284 and 294 will originate or end in CRT
     

    Customers with reservations on trains that are being modified will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day. Amtrak will waive additional charges for customers looking to change their reservation during the modified schedule by calling our reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL.

    Greyhound and Peter Pan consolidated all of their operations into the Lower Level of North Wing Post-Covid (They both had a couple of gates out of South Wing, Lower Level).

    Then DeCamp discontinued their commuter routes, leaving more vacant gates in the lower level of South Wing.

    Lakeland started to use a couple of gates out of the Lower level, and either Lakeland, Port Authority or both parties thought it was best to relocate all of Lakeland's routes downstairs to the lower level. Lakeland move all of their routes to the former DeCamp gates on the lower level.

    With this move, this allowed NJ Transit to utilize Lakeland's former gates to consolidate all of their routes during the day to the 200's, 300's and 51-56 gates, only using the Greyhound gates during the late night hours.

    That’s an error on their part. The 9:10pm train from Bowling Green and the 9:35pm from Grand Central-42nd Street are two separate trains. The 9:10pm train from Bowling Green arrives at Grand Central at 9:22pm. Then there’s the 9:14pm train from Bowling Green that arrives at Grand Central at 9:27pm. The last train from Bowling Green is at 9:23pm, arriving at Grand Central at 9:35pm.

    SUMMER UPDATES

    Per the NYC Ferry website:

    South Brooklyn Faster Connections Expanded to Evening Service

    Starting Monday, July 17th, NYC Ferry’s South Brooklyn route will expand its morning Faster Connections service to offer most riders a faster weekday evening commute when traveling from Wall Street/Pier 11, making commutes quicker and easier for New Yorkers. With this schedule change, NYC Ferry’s South Brooklyn “Faster Connections” will now be available on weekdays from 6:15am-10:15am and 3:30pm-8:00pm.

    There is one difference with the evening service. 

    We added a stop at Governors Island during the afternoon commute to give students, workers, and leisure travelers who went to Governors Island from Bay Ridge or Atlantic Ave/Pier 6 a return trip home before Governors Island closes each evening. The afternoon service to and from Bay Ridge still provides a 20-minute travel time savings to riders going to/from Pier 11.

    Introducing the Rockaway Reserve

    Starting July 1st, NYC Ferry riders can reserve a spot on any weekend Rockaway trips to the beach from 9am-2pm and back from 3pm-8pm. Reserved tickets cost $10 and are available for purchase up to 2 weeks before the date of each departure, so plan ahead and get your tickets early! Most spots on each vessel are un-reserved so riders paying a $4.00 regular fare, $2.75 as part of the ten-pack or $1.35 discount will be able to ride normally. Reserved tickets are available for purchase in the NYC Ferry app for travel to/from Rockaway via both Wall Street/Pier 11 and Sunset Park/Brooklyn Army Terminal.

    We have a new number 2 in the top 10 highest ridership bus routes, although the whole top 10 got very interesting overall.

  11. LA Metro Rail Regional Connector opened on June 16, connecting the A, E, and L light rail lines.

     

    Former services:

    A line (Blue): Downtown Long Beach to 7th Street/Metro Center in Downtown LA.

    E line (Expo): Downtown Santa Monica to 7th Street/Metro Center in Downtown LA.

    L line (Gold): APU/Citrus College in Azuza to Atlantic in East LA via Downtown LA.

     

    The Regional Connector now allows both A and E lines to run through Downtown LA making two new stops (Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill and Historic Broadway) and rebuilding a third stop (Little Tokyo/Arts District, formerly above ground on the L line, now below ground on the A and E line) to replace the north and south portions of the L line.

     

    The A line (Blue) now runs between Downtown Long Beach and APU/Citrus College in Azuza, replacing the northern portion of the L line.

    The E line (formerly Expo, now Gold) now runs between Downtown Santa Monica and Atlantic in East LA, replacing the southern portion of the L line.

Following a multi-year redesign of the Suffolk County Transit System's bus network, known as Reimagine Transit, a new bus system that is expected to be more reliable and efficient is coming to Suffolk County in the Fall of 2023. The new network of the Suffolk County Transit system will feature longer hours, full Sunday service, timed connections, increased frequency and improved routes to get to where you need to go faster.

  13. Stopped by Sunrise Mall last Friday (June 16) to see which stores were still left open.

    For those who are wondering if Sunrise Mall is still open, the answer is: YES and NO. Let me explain.

    Currently there are six stores left at the mall: (From South to North)

    -Macy's

    -HomeGoods

    -XSport Fitness

    -Raymour & Flanagan Outlet

    -Dick's Sporting Goods

    -Dave & Buster's

    All six stores have outdoor entrances as well as an entrance to the indoor mall. The indoor mall entrances from the six stores are closed, due to the fact the indoor mall is closed and there are no more stores left inside the indoor portion of the mall. The separate entrances to the indoor mall are labeled "EXIT ONLY", meaning you can't enter. If you're in one of those six stores listed above and you're trying to go to another one of those six stores, you have to go back outside and walk to that other store.

    Also, some parking lots have been closed off on the West and North sides of the Mall. (From the Northwest end of Macys to the Northeast end of Dave & Buster's)

    So basically Sunrise Mall went from an indoor mall to an outdoor strip mall. LOL.

     

    When Sunrise Mall does close, hopefully NICE has made final decisions with the n19 and the n80 in where they want to relocate them. With the n54/55 already serving Amityville and the n71 being planned to serve Amityville (per the SCT redesign), I'm very intrigued to see what they do with these two routes, especially with Suffolk County Transit leaving the mall in the fall due to their redesign being implemented.

    Yes, the M15 runs on First Avenue, but that’s because 1st and 2nd Avenues are one-way streets. 2nd Avenue runs southbound and 1st Avenue runs northbound.

    No matter what happens to SAS, the M15 Local will always be there.

    When the full length SAS is finally completed and implemented, the M15 Select Bus might not be there.

    No. The M15 Local will be intact, however the M15-SBS will be subject to elimination depending on when Phase 4 is completed, the (T) runs full service to Hanover Square, and how SAS will affect the M15 services (Local and SBS) as a whole.

    Most likely, the M15 services will start to be affected when Phase 3 is completed and the (T) starts running between 125th Street and Houston Street. If the M15-SBS loses riders, they will probably go after the M15-SBS short turns between 125th St and Houston St in the morning and reduce some runs in the off-peak hours. While they’re doing that, they’ll probably increase local service while extending the Pike St-Cherry St runs to South Ferry to offset the loss of some of the SBS runs.

    When Phase 4 is completed, and the (T) runs full service, the M15 services might be affected even more. Since the (T) and the M15-SBS are technically competing services, if SBS loses more service to the (T), they might give it the B82-SBS treatment (weekdays only), or they will axe it altogether and slightly increase the local service throughout the day to offset the loss of the SBS. However, the late night local service will go to hourly service instead of half hourly due to the (T) running every 20 minutes.

    Either way, if SAS gets completed and fully implemented, it will affect the M15 services in some way or form.

    I don’t get why they can’t take funding from other rail lines (cough cough SHORE LINE EAST cough) and use that for the NH line in terms of priority. SLE has barely got its ridership back and they’re still running half empty trains up and down the branch

    They’re going after Shore Line East as well, not just the New Haven Line.

    The governor was proposing to reduce SLE to 44 percent of pre-pandemic levels while reducing New Haven Line to 86 percent of pre-pandemic levels. I don’t know when he decided to change it to 60 percent, because that would make it even worse.

    Most likely, they will reduce the express portion of the New Haven Line, since the express makes local stops East of Stamford, all in the state of Connecticut. The local portion (West of Stamford) will probably stay intact or have a slight reduction, since majority of the stops are in New York State.

    Only the Hartford Line will stay intact… for now.
