UPDATE: Flushing bound (7) platforms will be closed on May 6th until Q1 2025 😒 Crazy……. should be done in 6 months not another 11 month delay

What's the schedule for the rest of the stops, has it changed

  2. If the Pitkin R46s are in much worse shape, will we see them go first and the CI 46s hold off until Option 1 goes to Concourse or Jamaica, or are we going to see some transfers around the system where they just retire the worst performing cars from each yard?

To what end?  Unless they plan on expanding the line there just isn't any need.  And if they do plan to expand the line there will be plenty of lead time.

I was thinking that if these are the cars they're going to buy for the next few decades or so, they could add another 10-20 for a few extra trains if service necessitates it

They ordered them "1 train for 1 train".  Complete replacement, no need for option orders.

Surprised they didn't order a train or two more for fleet expansion, but this is the MTA we're talking about

Yep. Then we're complete the 4040-4199, 100-104 park of the base order.

Also, 4180-84 are at a different spot at SBK instead of the usual spot

What's the best public spot to view the cars, and do they still store R32s for scrap there, or do you have to look at 36th-38th for those?

They've been struggling to meet service as of late so stripping parts to keep other units alive is probably an act of desperation to run some service. Hopefully, those R211S begin revenue service soon.

Will they need to order more R211Ss, or do they just need the whole order in service ASAP to retire the R44s ASAP

So... there is a new speed control system installed at Essex Street and that has led to increased run times on the J of at least 2 to 3 minutes.

Add to that the F GO that has it on the Cranberry Tube...

here I am pulling into Fulton Street southbound, already late, and facing a wall of passengers who got lost because they just saw the (J) sign on the stairs and didn't read the words "Broad Street" next to it.

Me: (yelling out the window as I open up) "Broad Street train! Broad Street Next and last"

    Computer: as the doors open.

"This a Broad Street bound J train, the next and last stop is... Broad Street"

Passenger at my window "Does this go to Delancy?"

Me (explains what they need to do to get to the northbound platform)

person walks away... another person, standing right next to them the whole time

"So... this doesn't go to Delancy?"

How did people survive with the marker light system? really? how?

Hell, nowadays so many thing about navigation are so much easier today than I remember them in the late 2000s-early 2010s:

    - countdown clocks everywhere, before you had no idea when a train would come - I once waited 45 mins for the (J) one night

    - having service changes online rather than just showing up at the station and finding out you need to make an extra transfer or backtrack

    - real time updates, before trains would just stop in the tunnel with no announcements

That's what I'd think.  There are R32s on the track at 37th St and Ft Hamilton Parkway.  3502 was one of them.  They look like they were prepped to be taken off property.  I was going to see what was there but there wasn't any place to do pull my car over.

According to nycsubway.org there are still about 80 cars waiting to be scrapped, though it could be more since only 6 cars on property (3350-3353 and 3360-3361) are officially designated for preservation

It costs money though to store the cars if they don't need them.  It'll be a lot of extra cars hanging around.

They'll probably start cannibalizing the worst sets first while they search for a scrap contract and the rest of the cars are still in service. It'll probably take a while to get them off property given how there are still around (90?) R32s left pending scrap, but the 46s might be easier to get rid of since they're newer. I doubt we'll see any saved for work service (maybe they'll save a single married pair for the museum), and I don't expect them to preserve any SIR R44s at all.

When the 11th R211 train goes into service, that'll mean they are whole again with spares, and can start retiring, and since these cars are not being used anyway they may be the first to go.

I'd imagine that since we're already at 110 cars on property, along with the 211S about to start testing or service on SI, we could maybe see official retirements begin in March. If we get a good delivery schedule the 44s could retired pretty quickly (by the end of the year) but the 46s will probably take at least a year and a half to cycle out.

The R211 is getting easy to catch.  When it comes down to it, there aren't all that many in-service car types anymore.  R46, R68, R143, R160, R179, R211 on the B division and R62, R142, and R188 on the A division.  The time with the most variation was late 60s/early 70s when the original equipment was being replaced and every order was different from the last.  Now they order more cars that are all the same.  There are close to 1700 R160s and they all are the same.  The R143 and R179 are so similar to them that most people don't know the difference.

Once the 44s/46s are retired, and if we see 211s to Jamaica, 207 and Pitkin and 160s to Concourse/CI, we'll still have some fleet variety, but not as much as we used too - even as late as 2019 the (J) / (Z) was running 5 car types and the (A)(C)(N)(Q)(W) 3. We'll still see some variety - I'm guessing the (J)(Z) will still be a 143/160/179 mix, the (A)(C) a 179/211 mix, and the (L) still a 143/160 mix (maybe some 211s go there or to the (M)), but even the (N)(Q)(W) , which I remember as mix, could be mostly 68s with an occasional 160. Personally as long as there are two types on a single line or two on a trunk (mix of 62s and 142s on Broadway-7th and Lex), I feel like it'll still be interesting to see different car types.

R46 married pair status (last time seen in service):

    6208+10 2/14
    6216+8 2/14
6220+2 1/31 (returning from CIY to Pitkin 2/14)
6224+6 1/31 (returning from CIY to Pitkin 2/14)
    6228+30 2/14
    6232+4 2/14
    6236+8 2/14
    6240+2 11/10
    6244+6 2/13
    6248+50 2/13
    6252+4 1/26
    6256+8 2/14

At this rate I wonder if 6240-2 will see service again, we might have seen the first non-accident retirements

I saw an R32 set on the track that parallels 37th St almost out to Ft Hamilton Pkwy the other day.  The last time I saw a train there it was an R27 set heading to the scrap heap.  There are others scattered around 38th st yard, but they are hard to see from a moving car because of the kind of fence it is.  There are R42s there too.

IIRC the last 42s in service were all kept for work service to replace older 32s; I'm guessing those 32s are on the way out right now

You know what's funny? All the R211s currently in service marks 100 cars, 8 on the (A) and 2 on the (C)plus 4080-84 and 4085-89 (hopefully they connect or switch with previous sets in service), went in service August 3 and 17, respectively) would make 110. We're already on that mark when those 2 come back into service, and that's a good thing, so these 46s can go.

Minus 4080-4089 and 4175-4189 (to be delivered), we should be getting into the 4200s soon, right?

Interesting to see a new set in service...it's been since October!

We're almost at the point where we have enough R211A/Ts plus spares in service to cover the 110 stored R32s, so maybe we could see some R46s start to get sidelined soon. With the R211S testing too and the R44s in even worse condition, maybe we'll see some of those go first, especially since there aren't that many cars on SI anyways

That's true. It's not like the Franklin Av and 42 St that has its own car numbers and arrangement. The Rockaway Park (S) is whatever's leftover from the (A) train pool.

Are the worst performing R46s usually designated for the shuttle?

it's going to be more faster since they are behind schedule and they are a decent chunk of cars that are fully built and were ready to go but the delivery was halted until the gearbox issue was fixed.

As for the R46's I would expect to start seeing retirements in the late summer - early fall by then there should be enough R211s to start pushing out cars to storage, retirement and transfers to CIY to kill off any of their bad cars and to increase spare factor.

Also it's rumored that the ALL the R179s might move too including the 10 car units.

Doubt it'll happen but having a R179 on 6th Av, 4th Av and Brighton express would pretty nice.

If I'm understanding this right, here's how each R211 order goes in term of car replacements:

-The R211S will directly replace all the R44s on the SIR, and those are expected to enter service by the summer, with R44s being pulled from service ASAP

-The base order of R211A will go to Pitkin to displace better performing R46s to CI. The first 110 R211A are meant to cover the 110 car shortage from the R32s retired in 2020, but we're almost at that number in service already. Once we get past, say, 150 cars in service, the R46s will start being retired (married pairs first). With 525 cars in the first option minus 150, we're left 375 R211s, which could replace 300 R46s. The base order is expected to be complete in about a year.

-The first option order is also R211A cars, and with 640 cars there you could replace 512 R46s, so the rest of the fleet. The second option order can then be for fleet expansion.

-The R211T will stay on the (C) for the time being, and they'll decide whether the second option order will be open gangway or not later.
