  1. The R143 and R160 are partially inter-operable (propulsion, brake, and some trainline functions, etc.). The R160 contract included a requirement to provide software/hardware upgrades to the R143s to allow this.

Both of these 4-car links were at Jamaica for wheel trueing. It's more efficient crew-wise to transfer them back to ENY as a single train.

So judging by this, we only have today (and possibly tomorrow) to catch the 160's on the (A) and 32's on the (J) (if that's running)?

Not sure yet. The call still hasn’t been made and there is still some internal back-and-forth right now about next steps. It could be tomorrow, it could be next week, or next month. Just have to wait and see.

  3. Just putting it out there that it may not be long before the R179s are back in service. The issue was quickly identified and only present on the train involved in the pull-apart incident.

Bombardier wasn’t really responsible for this. This was a result of a QA/QC failure at WABTEC, which was the supplier of the linkbar equipment.

Now it is to be assumed that those will operate on the 5 am trips from Rockaway Park to 207 St. Do the am Rockaway Park trips turn around at 207 and head down to Lefferts or Mott Av?

It varies depending on the needs of the service really. So far looks like 8-9 consists of R160s donated to the A.

i should add that several consists of R179s have been transferred out of Pitkin Yard for storage at an undisclosed location.

The (F) will return to regular WEEKDAY service. The line had 6/7 sets to spare but supervision only approved of 4 sets out of culver yard inventory.

The switches at Kings Highway are out of service until around September, so regular weekday service likely won’t return until then. New switch machines are being installed that are incompatible with the existing GRS Model 5 interlocking machine. Next time a switch throws at Kings Highway it’ll be under the control of the new interlocking being constructed there.

This is why the F for the time being will continue to run the essential service schedule - the base F schedule is inoperable right now due to Kings Highway being unavailable. In the interim it is possible that a supplement schedule will be written with slightly increased service and a few trains turning at 18ave. Either way, the F’s train requirements are reduced compared to the base schedule which is a major help in this situation.

Yesterday afternoon, 5 R160s from Culver Yard were transferred to Rockaway Park Yard. Overnight, several more consists from JYD and 179 layup were transferred to Pitkin Yard. One of them is a Siemens set.

28 R32s are currently at ENY now after 3 transfer movements yesterday evening. Given that access to/from 207 yard isn’t available this weekend due to a GO, that number isn’t likely to change until Monday at the earliest.

Okay, I really appreciate your updates a lot here. I thought you wrote on subchat they were retired, but this seems more like it. Everybody took that and ran with it. This is the point I've been trying to stress with everybody, especially with everyone so antsy and jumpy about the prospect of retirement. Nothing definitive is happening until service and equipment needs are re-established, whenever that may be, and nothing is getting scrapped at the current moment. For the record, even the officially-retired R42s are sitting in the yard without being stripped yet––and that's a mothballed fleet!

Yep, initially it was appearing that the cars were retired, even to those inside the agency. More info came out this afternoon with regards to their status.

I've updated everything with the more recent and accurate information as of this afternoon. The cars remain on the active roster and may return to service once the COVID-19 pandemic has concluded.

With respect to the R42s, those cars may actually be formally retired at this point, as they have been transferred out of the formal responsibility of the car shops for maintenance. Of course, formally retired cars can return to service if needs permit. This has certainly occurred in the past.

That does not mean they are all retired. Big difference between OOS and retired.

The R32s are not needed because of the (C) not running at this time.

This is a very important point. The cars are not retired per se, just held OOS. I've edited the title and description to make that distinction more clear.

It is being said that the cars may return to service once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

  8. I'm sure this info is also going to be in an upcoming ERA bulletin as well as elsewhere, but the official car assignments have changed to reflect R32s running only on the A line alongside R46s and R179s, with the C being a mix of R46s and R179s.

As it happens occasionally with changes to car assignments for various operational and bureaucratic reasons, sometimes it takes a while for what actually takes place on the road to catch up to the changes in car assignments. But given that the official car assignments denote zero R32s on the C, I'd say get your R32 C rides in now while you can I guess.

More R179s came in tonight. I would give you fleet numbers but they were all without number plates.

Those were the last 3 cars to be delivered - 3047/6/5.

They’ve started installing the number plates on NYCT property for some of the last few deliveries.

So this dude @Dj Hammers said on Twitter that the R42s that ran on the (J) earlier this morning is out of service and the entire fleet is now officially retired for good. Subject to change though.

Not sure what tweet you're referring to - I didn't tweet that.

Regardless, that info is correct. The cars are no longer in regular revenue service.
