  1. What about Time Warner Cable? I'm not 100% sure if they compress the picture quality like Cablevision. They're a cable company as well if I'm not mistaken.

    They may not compress as much as Cablevision, but all cable carriers reduce the bitrate of their HD streams. Verizon doesn't have to do so with fiber (at least to the same extent)...there's plenty of light to go around for everything.

  2. @Joe, how is the picture quality for Fios? Is it really 100% crystal clear, unlike Cablevision?

    As far as HD is concerned, Verizon applies the least amount of compression to their video streams. Cable systems (especially those using DOCSIS 3) compress their video streams because they have to. Lack of bandwidth, really.

    IMO, FIOS has the best picture quality (aside from OTA locals, which will always look better OTA.)

    .24Mbps = 24kbps

    24 kilobits per second / 8 = 3 KiloBYTES per second

    THREE KILOBYTES PER SECOND. IF I WANTED DIAL UP SERVICE, I WOULD HAVE STAYED WITH AO F***ING L! The website even says it would take FOUR HUNDRED AND FORTY MINUTES to download 800MB. F*** Cablevision!

    Just for completeness' sake:

  4. Camera shake occurs at all shutter speeds. Whether or not it is optically evident in your photos is another question.

    For example, imagine a camera duct-taped to a vibrator (yes, i'm being serious here, you pervs.) You trip the shutter twice, one frame at 1/30 shutter speed and another at 1/8000 shutter speed. Camera shake in both shots was the same, regardless of the shutter speed (or even presence of IS), right?

    That said, IS is useful at all shutter speeds, in fact, Nikon sells a 200mm f/2 lens that has VR (Nikon calls it VR; Canon calls it IS). We shouldn't forget the famous 70-200mm f/2.8 VR.
