  1. The M8 fiasco will defintely play a role in all of this, since we all know that the (MTA) will offer Kawasaki a chance to bid in the R179 and R211 orders. The object is also to keep NY working by having these trains made in NY.might as well give it to Bombardier since they have a plant in Plattsburgh.Come to think of it the MTA would rather pick Kawasaki, since they have the only plant in the U.S that can build a rail car from the ground up without manufacturing carbodies in their base countries.the Lincoln NE plant is capable of doing that.Bombardier would have to have the car body shells fabricated in La Pocatiere Quebec. and ALstom carbody facilities is in San Paolo Brazil.Logistics play a big role in these contracts.Going with Kawasaki will save in terms of shipping cost.

I don't see what is really the point of tendering out such contracts for bids then if (MTA) is going to give the contract to Kawasaki anyway.

In fact, I am beginning to suspect that the numerous delays could be due to some possible bid rigging going on to give Kawasaki an unfair advantage. We will see how this turns out.

  2. i have nothing to say because the damn cars aren't here yet and you making assignments that are completely false, if these cars arrive with CBTC in them, they will go to Jamaica, if not with the CBTC they will only go to Pitkin and ENY by defalt, until then RELAX!!!, im in no rush for these cars to come the MTA is using their brains right now

We can't assume they will automatically be assigned to the same facilities currently served by the R32 and R42 fleet. The only one we know for sure is ENY since the (J)/(Z) are not compatible with 75-foot cars. Any other yard is a wild guess.

It has been officially stated that Jamaica wants to go 100% R160, and to meet that goal, you would have to pull them out of Coney Island. Thus, the R179s can easily fill in the void at Coney Island left by moving the R160s to Jamaica, and Jamaica can give its R46s to 207th Street and the SIR.

While I understand I am speculating, my line assignments simply make logical sense for simplicity.

  3. When are the R179s expected and how many will there be - enough to make the B Division R46, R68/A, R160 and R179?

The R179 should replace all R32s and R42s, and I believe that some will displace some R46s to the SIR. After all, (MTA) has confirmed that some R46s will be overhauled for the SIR.

Here are the line assignments for the B Division I would expect after all R179s are delivered:

    R46 - (A), (C), and SIR

    R68 - (;), (D), (G), and (S)

    R68A - (:)

    R143 - (L)

    R160 - (E), (F), (J), (L), (M), (R), (S), and (Z)

    R179 - (J), (N), (Q), and (Z)

In this way, Jamaica goes all R160 where the (N) and (Q) give up their R160s to the (F), (R), and (S), and the new R179s are assigned to them. Considering the (A) and (C) got shafed in the R160 order, I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again.

  4. I don't know how they plan to resolve that issue. When I sent in a suggestion to upgrade the cars with digital signs awhile ago, they said there weren't enough pins in the couplers for that.

As a side question, why did NYCT choose to go with manual rollsigns on the R62/R62A/R68/R68A instead of motorized ones like what the R44/R46 originally had? Was there a reliability problem with the motorized signs?

  5. The R62s and R68s have at least another 20 years left on them, so it's not like it would be a wasted expense, should they go forward with this proposal.

Actually, initial R62 and R62A replacement is currently planned for 2023, so it isn't quite 20 years from now. Probably by the time the R211s (R46 replacement) are delivered in 2015, a new contract number will be assigned for the R62/R62A replacement.

Also, the red/green LED border would come in handy for the (6) and <6>, otherwise it was a big waste of money, since the (2) and (5) don't have diamond services anymore (don't think the (2) ever had one).

  6. If they go through with that new plan to upgrade the 62A's with digital signs and announcements; that would solve the flexibility problem.

Of course, NYCT would have to install new wiring to install new destination signs on the R62A. The R44/R46 had motorized rollsigns, and NYCT simply used the existing wiring to power the LCD signs. The R62/R62A, on the other hand, have manual rollsigns.

I agree that the (6) would be the ideal route for the R62As. The (2) and (5) swap cars frequently, and it would be a total nightmare for subway operators if one or both of those lines were to switch to R62As.

  7. Damn what happen to Kawasaki? I mean the R160s did alright and now they are screwing up on the M8s? Shoot oh well.

Just award the contract to Bombardier and get it over with! Enough with this silly game of favoritism towards Kawasaki!:mad::mad:

  8. So the R179's are gonna get delivered within a year (well, at least the first cars) and the R211's within 2 years after the contract? That doesn't seem right to me.

Yes, that is what I have read. The R179 will replace the R32 and R42, and will displace some R46s to the SIR to replace the R44s. The R211 will replace the R46 at least in the main NYCT fleet; I don't know about the SIR. Initial replacement of the R62/R62A fleet should begin in 2023, and the R68/R68A replacement should begin around 2025.

  9. The R188's are not replacing anything, but rather displacing cars from the (7) line. The next major A-division order is not expected until 2013-14 IIRC. B-division is priority right now with a total of 340 R179's.

Don't forget the R211s as well, which will replace the R46s. The R211 design draft is expected next year, and the order should probably be awarded in 2013, with deliveries in 2015.

From what I heard, initial replacement of the R62/R62A won't begin until around 2023.

  10. who u think would win the contract

I still think it will probably be Kawasaki, although the earthquake/tsunami might make it somewhat less likely. Kawasaki after all will be busy with the R188, and maybe Bombardier, Alstom, or Siemens might be more able to meet NYCT's R179 delivery schedule.

  11. If the contract doesn't go to Kawasaki, Bombardier, or Alstom, here are some additional options:

    • Nippon Sharyo
    • Ansaldobreda (hopefully not)
    • Škoda
    • Siemens
    • Changchun Railway Vehicles
    • CSR Sifang
    • Tokyu Car Corporation
    • Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles

  12. That's because no one here even me knows that company till you mentioned it, and anyways they might not have any experience building NYC Subway cars. Most likely the company that will build these cars is Kawasaki.

Well, they made LA Metro's P865 and P2020 light rail cars. Nippon Sharyo railcars are heavily used in Tokyo and Nagoya.

  13. As an idea, if CDTA eventually plans on using articulated buses, perhaps they can piggyback on some of ABQ RIDE's New Flyer hybrid artic options. Both MBTA in Boston and RTC Ride in Reno did exactly that. Yes, I know CDTA is mostly a loyal Gillig customer, but Gillig doesn't make artics.

  14. So, has it been confirmed yet that the R62As will be going to the (6)? It seems to make the most sense, considering that they ran on the (6) before and the fact that they had green/red circle/diamond indicators installed, which would be useful for the (6)/<6>.

The (2)/(5) don't make any sense considering they often share cars, and it would be an operational nightmare to constantly change rollsigns. The (4) might be a possibility, though I still think the (6) would be more likely.

  15. That is incorrect sir. The R46 WILL be going to SI. I have the documents right here in front of me. And as I have said a million times, funds for equipment, and funds for operating come from two separate budgets.

This is the current projected timeline.

April - Award base contract for 290 R179's

June - Award option to Kawasaki for 123 additional R188's

January 2012 - Award option for 50 additional R179's, and award contract for SIR R46 retrofit program.

I'm guessing the R46s will most likely see service on the (A), (C), and SIR after the R179 delivery, is that correct?
