"What do New York City straphangers share in common with the folks in Plattsburgh, New York?

Both got some welcome news when the MTA and Bombardier Transportation inked the contract to manufacture 300 new R179 subways cars at Bombardier’s Plattsburgh facility. The order specifies10 prototypes for testing and approval, followed by 50 five-car sets and 10 four-car sets, with revenue service expected around late 2016.

For upstate residents, the $599 million deal will mean some 500 jobs and related revenue stimulus. For riders on NYC Transit’s lettered B Division lines, it will mean a fleet of state-of-the-art subway cars to retire the aging R32s and R42s, some of which are approaching 50 years old, well past the expected service life of a subway car. The R179s are also slated for use on the Second Avenue Subway.

What will the new cars look like?

“The 60-foot shell won’t look too different from the R160s you see on the lettered lines today,” says Michael Wetherell, vice president and chief mechanical officer, Division of Car Equipment, Subways. “Those design specifications have proven very successful. But as we work on this new order, we look forward to introducing a number of improvements.”

Lighting, climate controls, and digital voice announcements will all be upgraded. For riders, the most visible change will be in communications, including the strip map displays.

As Wetherell explains, “Instead of a display map that counts down the stops, the new cars will have a route indicator with more flexible messaging capacity. The new cars’ audio and text message displays will also have greater flexibility, allowing NYC Transit to quickly update service modifications and scheduling information.

Other improvements will be less visible. While the cars are not being purchased with closed-circuit television fully loaded, they will include the necessary wiring and conduits for future security camera installations. The new cars will also be lighter. By removing propulsion motors, lightening the floors, and making other materials changes, the trimmer R179s will improve overall energy efficiency.

“We are constantly looking for ways to reduce unnecessary weight,” Wetherell says. “It makes a real difference. Every pound of weight you can cut adds up to a significant energy saving over the life of a subway fleet.”

Though work in Plattsburgh has begun, much remains to be done before straphangers can actually enjoy their new ride.

According to Wetherell, the design specifications will be drafted and reviewed over the next four to six months. After initial design, ten R179 prototypes will be delivered in about 33 months to undergo another nine to 12 months of track testing. Full scale production and revenue service is scheduled for late 2016 or early 2017.

“The design and review process never really stops,” Wetherell says. “We are very excited about working with the design engineers at Bombardier, and will be reviewing every detail very closely to make sure we get the best possible product.”

  2. Online customers??? O_o???

SIRTOA does not require you to book online to ride, just use a vending maching convienientely located in the station [Tompkinsville/St.George ONLY], pay $2.25 using cash, debit or credit card and your ready to go... For Stapleton and points South, it's free to ride between those stations...

I believe he might have been referring to freight customers, not passenger service.

  3. Stick with what you have. There is no need to be buying another SLR. What are you trying to prove? Save up and buy lenses. You can hardly take perfect shots now, so why get another SLR. The camera is not going to get you better shots. If you cant use it you will see the outcome in the pics. Dont you have a HD video camera? Stop wasting money. If your HD camera is broken, almost every P&S they make nowadays have HD video and you can find one for a reasonable price. Lower the ISO in your underground shots. Your video camera, clean your lens. If your not going to take care of your camera then you shouldnt be fooling around with a $700 to $800 SLR with HD if you cant even keep a P&S lens clean.

Daniel, you have a camera capable of 720p video. Don't bother.

I have NEVER seen an SLR that allows you to do a "sweep" panorama. (The Sony Alphas with the translucent mirrors aren't technically SLR's) It's a gimmick created for the cheaper point-and-shoots to attract customers. Real panoramas are done with a bit of skill and patience.

It really doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out a camera. Back in the day when people had to use film EVERYTHING was done manually, yes, people used light meters to help evaluate the surrounding light before they could snap away- film isn't something you can waste with a few test shots.

Be glad you already have a digital camera. You are improving slowly with every photo thread but there's SO MUCH MORE you can do with that camera of yours. Come on man, don't spend any more money than you have to. Seriously.

Not to be rude but be able to get DSLR quality shots from your current DSLR before you go buying a new one. I have a P&S and look at the photos I post, my shots can be comparable to that of a DSLR

Remember, its the person behind the camera not the equipment that plays the key role in good photos. A good photographer can get good shots with any equipment.

If I can do that with a P&S, you should be able to do better with a DLSR.

    P.S Lower your ISO!

    I concur.

  4. If it's true, I'm sure it was because it's only 340 cars. They are doing the 188's right now. MTA has been doing a lot of wheeling and dealing lately. It's probably more cost effective to have them doing both simultaneously.

This also makes me wonder who will be awarded the contract for R46 retrofit.

I could see this one going to Kawasaki, and the R46, and R211 going to Bombardier. But that's only my opinion.

For the R46, it might be Alstom. They are the ones who made the cab-signaling system installed in the R44s currently.

  5. The diesels would also be useful in case if the SIRTOA in the future sees Freight service on the line and these BL20G's will help if there might be a break down as subway locomotives might not be powerful enough to pull these light-moderate freight loads. Meanwhile more engines might be added for almost impossible heavy loads.

On another note, Diesels cannot exceed and are restricted to a certain point in St. George's Terminal, note a Red Sign with White or Black Colored Signs on the ceilings of the station. Sadly I believe it is due to the smoke from the engines, but dk if the BL20G's have Overrunning 3rd Rail capabilites.

Nope, no 3rd rail shoes. They are purely diesels only.

  6. Ok, that came out wrong [i'm not against SI getting new engines], but why [other than the 'budget covers them'] did they get such 'massive' engines. To me those engines look more suited for a heavier work load than basically subway equipment. Couldn't SI have gotten smaller engines?

The BL20G's are far from massive engines. They are for light-medium loads. It was cheaper for SIRT to add an order for new engines with the MNRR order, rather than have engines designed specifically for SIRT. There is a decent amount of misc MoW work what the engines are used on as well. The diesels also allowed the SIRR to run service during the winter blizzard while most of the LIRR, MNRR and NYCT system wasn't running.

  7. BL20Gs are the only Railroad equipment SIRTOA has, from what i know. The R44s dont count as RR cars even if they meet FRA standard.

    But them BL20s Look sweet!

Heard these were mistakenly placed on the MNCRR branches before and moved to SIR?

Wrong ;) SIRTOA is the only Railroad that still actively uses cabooses, we also have hoppers and other miscellaneous MoW equipment.
  8. It seems like the arcade era is over in the city. I think it has to do with hoodlums congregating at arcades. Even the arcade in Chinatown is moving to a bar in Williamsburg. Broadway City in Times Square was epic, but thanks to a stabbing and a rape, it is gone.

It's not moving to williamsburg, it's moving to sunset park.

  9. So one of my cable boxes from TWC burned out on Wednesday and was replaced with a HD box. I couldn't believe that out of all things to be sending interference to the component cables would be my computer's VGA cable. Just having it plugged into the TV will send out interference.

Other than that, I gave it a test drive on BBC America and I do have to say that the picture quality was superb. Now only if the box came with a HDMI port instead of DVI.

DVI and HDMI is the same in terms of quality.
