I never understood why MN couldnt install 3rd rail and use M7 like the LIRR instead.

Connecticut banned third rail and most of the NH Line is in Connecticut.

Dangit these M8's are just spruced up M7's

The M7s are excellent in my opinion and one of the smoothest commuter trains I've rode on presently at 80mph+. Their seat comfort is definitely better than that of the NJT MLV seats by far!

Well, well, well... Another batch of trains making the Commuter Rail look more boring... I love the M2's and M4's, they look in the sunset!

I bet that the M8s would be rough with hard seats.

Are the M8's going on the Harlem line or the New Haven lines?

 

Im not familiar with the train types on the Metro North. I am used to the train types on the LIRR and Subway.

 

LIRR has the M7's which are nice, and the subway has the modern R160's coming replacing those horrible R32 + R42's as we move into 2010.

 

M8's on the Metro North will be nice as well.

The M8s will only operate on the New Haven unless there's a snow emergency in the future that requires extra trains on the Hudson or Harlem like once before with the M2s. Note that the difference between the M7A and M8 is that the M8 is compatible with both 750v DC (to GCT) and 12.5v AC/25 hz (on NEC) and has both collector shoes and pantographs.

For example.Look at the Kawasaki R62`s.They been around since 83` and have a great track record.

Even better, the Shinkansen 700 and E3 series!

Question what are the chances the flaws on these cars will be minimal?

At least 90% for the first 5 years as were other Japanese Trains elsewhere in the world!

Expect these to wear out in a decade and retire in two decades just like every Shinkansen fleet except the 0 series.

Did you say that the M4s are going to be retired as well? I thought that the original slate was just for the M2s as the M4s are even younger than the M3/As.
